For a computer science student who wants a free, self-paced starting sequence on Microsoft Learn, the strongest order is: basic computer concepts, then Python fundamentals, then Azure Fundamentals, then an Azure AI path once the programming basics are in place. Four of the five picks below are fully described on Microsoft Learn. The fifth is a slot to fill from the catalog, and this article explains how to choose it rather than naming one as if it were verified.
This is an editorial selection, not an official Microsoft ranking. Microsoft Learn offers a broad catalog of interactive paths and modules, plus a Student Hub with student-focused resources. Titles, durations, module counts and prerequisites change, so check the live path page before you enroll. Figures below are the ones shown on Microsoft Learn in the 2026 catalog check.

How these five were chosen
I filtered the catalog on four criteria. First, beginner accessibility: each pick is labelled as a beginner route or is clearly usable without prior Azure or AI experience. Second, breadth: the set spans general computing, programming, cloud and applied AI rather than repeating one subject. Third, stated prerequisites: a path that names what you need to know first is easier to place in a timetable. Fourth, progression: each pick builds on the one before it, so the list works as a sequence rather than a shopping cart.

The five at a glance
| Path | Level as listed | Listed duration | Modules | Stated prerequisites | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exploring basic computer concepts | Beginner | 1 hr 45 min | 4 | Not stated on the path page | Orientation to how computers work |
| Get Started with Python Programming: Part 1 – Fundamentals | Beginner | 3 hr 12 min | 4 | Not stated on the path page | First working programming habits |
| Azure Fundamentals (three paths) | Beginner | 56 min; 2 hr 48 min; 1 hr 21 min | Not stated as a single count | Not stated on the overview page | Cloud concepts and services |
| Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure | Listed as a beginner path | Not stated on the path page | 7 | Basic computing concepts and Python | Exploratory applied AI |
1. Exploring basic computer concepts
This is the entry point. The path runs 1 hour 45 minutes across four modules and covers how computers work, how they connect to the internet, basic programming, computing history and security. Use it as a quick orientation before a formal course in computer organization or networking, which will go much deeper. It gives vocabulary you will use in every later course, so take it first even if you feel comfortable with computers.
2. Get Started with Python Programming: Part 1 – Fundamentals
This is the first real programming step. At 3 hours 12 minutes over four modules, it moves from writing first code to setting up a development environment and then to reusable logic, including functions. The modules also cover decisions and data manipulation. Microsoft describes it as building the foundational skills needed to begin building Python applications, which is the right expectation: it teaches the building blocks, not a complete project.

3. Azure Fundamentals
Microsoft’s Azure training overview presents three beginner paths. Describe cloud concepts takes 56 minutes. Describe Azure architecture and services takes 2 hours 48 minutes. Describe Azure management and governance takes 1 hour 21 minutes. Together these total about five hours of listed learning time. The overview also presents Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals and a practice assessment as possible next steps. Certification is optional, and completing the training does not on its own imply that you hold it.

For a CS student, this path is about how modern software is hosted and operated. It is not a substitute for algorithms, operating systems or software design coursework.
4. Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure
This path has seven modules and introduces the main AI workloads Microsoft lists: generative AI and agents, text analysis, speech, computer vision, information extraction and knowledge retrieval. Its page states that you should already understand basic computing concepts and Python, so place it after the first two picks rather than at the start. Treat it as an exploratory tour of applied AI services. Product and service names in Azure AI change frequently, so expect some screens and labels to differ from what is described.
5. The fifth slot: choose a security or data path
I have not named a specific fifth path, because the catalog listings I could verify for this article did not include enough detail on a single option to endorse it with the same confidence as the first four. Cybersecurity and AI-related options do appear in the catalog, and they are the most natural fits for a CS student who has covered the basics.
Rank #4
If you choose a security option, separate general cybersecurity from AI-security-specific content. The AI-security path explicitly assumes familiarity with basic AI and security concepts, so it belongs after the Azure AI path, not before. Before enrolling in any fifth path, open its live page and confirm the level, prerequisites, subject coverage and estimated time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSuggested order
- Exploring basic computer concepts, to build vocabulary.
- Get Started with Python Programming: Part 1 – Fundamentals, to write and structure code.
- Azure Fundamentals, to learn how cloud services are described and governed. This can also be taken earlier if cloud skills are useful for your coursework.
- Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure, once Python is comfortable.
- Your fifth path, chosen to fill the gap your degree leaves open.
Use Microsoft Learn alongside your course, not instead of it. These paths give you structured practice and recognised training. They do not replace the theory, problem sets and projects your curriculum requires.
