There is no single best Linux laptop for everyone. A Linux-first system can simplify setup and support; a Framework model prioritizes repairability; and a performance-oriented machine may suit workloads that need stronger graphics. This five-laptop shortlist groups the options by use case rather than presenting them as winners in a controlled head-to-head test. Before buying, verify the exact configuration, distribution support, and regional availability.
Five Linux laptops, organized by use case
The picks below reflect the categories in WIRED’s Linux laptop guide, updated in September 2026. They are editorial recommendations, not results from a shared test of all five machines. Specifications, model generations, prices, and availability can change, so check the seller’s current listing and support documentation before placing an order.

System76 Lemur Pro: a Linux-first pick
WIRED names the Lemur Pro its “Best for Most People” choice. That category makes it a sensible starting point if you want a laptop sold with Linux as a primary option and a vendor support path. Confirm which generation and components are currently offered where you live; the recommendation alone does not establish current stock, price, or specifications.

TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14: a compact premium alternative
WIRED’s “Best MacBook Replacement” category goes to the InfinityBook Pro 14. Consider it if a compact premium machine is your priority, but check the precise Linux setup and regional availability before comparing it with other models. The category label is an editorial judgment, not a claim that it matches another laptop on every specification or test.

- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
Framework Laptop 13: prioritize repairability
WIRED names the Framework Laptop 13 its “Most Repairable” pick and reports official support for Ubuntu and Fedora; support for other distributions may come from the community rather than Framework. WIRED’s author described about seven to eight hours of casual use on the particular version tested. That is an individual observation, not a standardized battery benchmark or a promise for every generation and configuration.
System76 Pangolin: a sysadmin-oriented option
Added to WIRED’s September 2026 guide as “A Sysadmin Favorite,” the Pangolin may be worth considering for system administration work. That label does not establish that every configuration is suited to virtualization, containers, or other demanding tasks. Check the current processor, memory, storage, and distribution support against the tools you use.

Kubuntu Focus Zr Gen 1: consider it for performance workloads
WIRED’s performance pick is the Kubuntu Focus Zr Gen 1. For a graphics-heavy workload, compare the actual GPU and configuration rather than relying on the category label. Check current information on thermals, noise, battery life, and support for your chosen Linux distribution before weighing it against a more portable laptop. WIRED advises additional research for Nvidia graphics.

Compatibility depends on the exact hardware and software combination—not simply the manufacturer’s name. Wireless hardware, graphics, firmware, sleep and power behavior, webcam, audio, and fingerprint readers are all worth checking for the specific laptop and distribution you plan to use.

- [ULTRA-RUGGED DESIGN] MIL-STD-810G and IP65 certified. Built to survive 6-foot drops, heavy rain, and extreme vibrations. Features a magnesium alloy chassis with an integrated carry handle for maximum portability
- [4G LTE - WORK ANYWHERE] Integrated 4G LTE Multi-Carrier Mobile Broadband. Stay connected to the internet in remote areas or on the road without relying on Wi-Fi or phone hotspots. True mobile freedom for field professionals
- [1200-NIT SUNLIGHT READABLE] 13.1" XGA Touchscreen with CircuLumin technology. At 1200 nits, it is nearly 4x brighter than a standard laptop, ensuring perfect visibility under direct, intense sunlight
- [LINUX UBUNTU PRE-INSTALLED] Fast, secure, and bloatware-free. Optimized for developers, network engineers, and diagnostic software that thrives in a stable, open-source environment
- [LEGACY SERIAL PORT] Features a native RS-232 Serial Port, HDMI, and USB 3.0. Essential for connecting directly to industrial machinery, CNCs, and automotive diagnostic tools without unreliable adapter
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the model generation and, where available, the processor, wireless card, graphics hardware, and other components. A product family can include configurations with different parts.
- Search Canonical’s Ubuntu Certified database. Use the Ubuntu certified laptops database to look for the named model or configuration and check which Ubuntu release is covered. Certification applies to the specified hardware and supported Ubuntu release; it does not certify every laptop from that manufacturer or establish support for every Linux distribution. The live database showed 1,316 results when accessed on October 7, 2026; that changing count is not a count of laptops universally compatible with Linux.
- Read the vendor’s support page for your model. Check which distributions and releases are officially supported, how to install them, and what support covers. For example, Framework’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS guide applies specifically to the Framework Laptop 16, not every Framework generation. It calls Ubuntu 24.04 an officially supported distribution for that system.
- Check the details that matter to your use. For Nvidia graphics, investigate driver and kernel compatibility and hybrid-graphics behavior for the exact system. For any laptop, look for model-specific information on wireless, firmware, suspend, battery behavior, webcam, audio, and fingerprint hardware.
Choose a support path as well as a laptop
A laptop that ships with Linux can reduce installation friction and give you a defined route to vendor support, but the seller’s terms determine what that support covers. Dell says select models are available with Ubuntu preinstalled and that Linux-preinstalled computers carry the same limited hardware warranty as its Windows systems. Dell also says troubleshooting after replacing the original operating system may require reinstalling that OS first. Read the current policy and warranty for the exact model rather than assuming that all Linux issues are covered.
Certification and vendor support answer different questions. Ubuntu certification indicates that a specified configuration is certified for a supported Ubuntu release. A vendor’s support documentation explains what the manufacturer supports and how it expects the system to be installed or troubleshot. Neither should be treated as proof that every other distribution, release, or component combination will work identically.

Match the configuration to your workload
- Everyday browsing and office work: prioritize a supported configuration, comfortable screen and keyboard, and battery information for the specific generation.
- Software development and systems work: check memory and storage options, plus compatibility with your development tools, virtualization, and any external devices you depend on.
- Creative work, gaming, or GPU compute: verify the exact GPU, Linux driver path, hybrid-graphics behavior, cooling, and power tradeoffs. Do not infer these from a laptop’s “performance” label.
- Portability or long use away from an outlet: compare weight, display size, and reviews of the exact configuration. Battery observations from one version should not be generalized to later models.
- Repairability and upgrades: check what can be replaced or upgraded on the current generation and whether the changes you expect to make are documented and supported.
If you plan to install Linux yourself
Use the installation guide for the exact laptop and distribution release. Framework’s guide for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on the Framework Laptop 16 specifies an 8 GB or larger USB drive for installation media. That is an installation requirement for readers setting up the system themselves, not an extra purchase needed when a laptop arrives with Linux installed.
