There is no universally best Gboard setup, but five settings are worth reviewing: text correction, Glide typing, voice typing, keyboard languages, and personalization. You can find them in Gboard’s settings; change only what fits how you type.
Open Gboard settings
Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard. Tap the keyboard’s feature menu, select More, then Settings. Depending on your Android version and phone maker, you may also find Gboard under Android Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. Menu names and paths can vary.

1. Text correction: reduce changes you do not want
Open Text correction to choose which suggestions and automatic changes Gboard uses. If it keeps altering text in ways you dislike, Google recommends trying Smart Compose or Auto-capitalization turned off. The trade-off is that you lose those conveniences.

If you still want predictive text and word suggestions, leave Show suggestion strip on. That strip can remain useful even when you disable an automatic change. Google’s guide to word suggestions and fixing mistakes explains these controls and suggests reviewing them when Gboard changes text unexpectedly.
2. Glide typing: swipe instead of tapping
With Glide typing, slide your finger from letter to letter to spell a word rather than tapping each key. Try it if it feels quicker or more comfortable for you; if you prefer individual taps, there is no need to enable it.

Find Glide typing in Gboard settings. Google also documents the Android route Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard, though manufacturer-customized Android versions may use different labels. Glide typing is not supported for every language. See Google’s Glide typing instructions.
3. Voice typing: dictate into text fields
Voice typing lets you speak instead of typing in a text field. Check Voice typing in Gboard settings, then use the microphone on the keyboard when you want to dictate. Talk-to-text does not work with every language, so availability depends on the language you use.

Do not assume ordinary dictation and advanced voice typing handle data identically. Google’s advanced voice typing documentation lists supported languages and device requirements. It also says that when you make detailed voice edits, the command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers to process the request. Review the feature’s eligibility and data handling before using it.
4. Keyboard languages: keep the layouts you use
Add the keyboard languages and layouts you need, and remove ones you never use if they make switching cumbersome. Gboard’s language setting is separate from your Android system language: changing the keyboard layout does not change the language of your phone’s menus.

To switch among configured languages, touch and hold the space bar. Follow Google’s keyboard setup instructions to manage languages and layouts.
5. Personalization: choose whether Gboard adapts
Gboard can personalize its suggestions based on your typing and voice-typing usage patterns. If you want it to adapt to your usage, leave Personalisation enabled; if you prefer not to personalize, turn it off. Google says disabling personalization can reduce input lag, but that is a troubleshooting recommendation—not a guarantee for every phone.

Google also provides a way to delete learned words and data. Its text correction and personalization guidance describes these options.
Other features have narrower availability
- Handwriting: Gboard can accept handwriting with a finger or stylus, but the layout is available only for supported languages. A stylus is optional. See Google’s handwriting instructions.
- Proofread: Google’s help page lists Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, English, and the United States as requirements, so this is not a general Android feature. See Google’s Proofread eligibility details.
- Writing tools: Availability depends on supported devices and languages. Google requires a supported device, Gboard set as the default keyboard, and the latest Gboard version. Check Google’s current Writing tools requirements for eligibility.
