Free alternatives can add useful features to Windows, but the right choice depends on what you do. Files adds file-management tools, Notepad++ is better suited to code and advanced text work, VLC handles a wider range of media formats, Greenshot adds screenshot markup tools, and FastStone Image Viewer offers browsing and batch image operations. Each has a tradeoff, and none is a universal upgrade.
Which free Windows apps are worth trying?
These five apps match common Windows tasks, but they are suggestions rather than a confirmed list of apps behind the headline. The case for switching is strongest when you need a feature the built-in app lacks. Windows Central’s guide to alternatives to default Windows 11 apps likewise frames the choice around the task and the features a user values.

| Task | Alternative | What it adds | Tradeoff or best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| File management | Files | Tabs, split view, tags, archive support, and settings backup and restore | For people who want more file-management controls; File Explorer remains installed. |
| Text editing | Notepad++ | Tabs, syntax highlighting, plugins, and advanced find and replace, including regular expressions and searches across files or folders | Best for code and more involved text tasks, rather than basic notes alone. |
| Audio and video playback | VLC | Broad format support and built-in codecs | Its larger feature set can make it feel more complex than the built-in player. |
| Screenshots | Greenshot | Screen, region, and window capture; annotation, blur, highlighting, and configurable shortcuts | Most useful if you capture or mark up screenshots regularly. |
| Image viewing and basic editing | FastStone Image Viewer | Thumbnail browsing, batch operations, common image and camera RAW support, and basic editing | Its interface looks dated, but its browsing and batch tools may suit people handling many images. |

In Windows 11, Microsoft’s documented route is Settings > Apps > Default apps. You can assign an app to a particular file or link type, or select an app and choose the file and link types it should open. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps.

Changing a default only controls what Windows opens for the file or link types you assign. It does not remove the built-in app or make the replacement better for every use. Try the alternative with the files and workflow you actually use before changing several associations.

Some useful Windows downloads extend the operating system instead of taking over a built-in app. Microsoft describes PowerToys as a free, open-source set of utilities for Windows power users and developers. Its tools include Peek for file previews, PowerRename for bulk renaming, PowerToys Run for launching apps, and Text Extractor for copying text shown on screen.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
That makes PowerToys a different kind of recommendation: it can improve particular workflows without replacing File Explorer, Notepad, or another default. Consider it when you want an added tool, not a new app to open a specific file type.
