When buying a 3D printer, prioritize dependable prints at practical speeds, a build volume that fits your real projects, materials suited to the parts you want to make, a setup style you can live with, and useful first-layer and recovery aids. None is universally non-negotiable: the right threshold depends on what you plan to print and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to handle.
1. Reliable prints at speeds you can actually use
A printer’s advertised maximum speed is not a measure of how reliably it will produce the parts you need. Prusa Research cautions that speed without precision can simply produce a bad print faster; this is manufacturer advice, not an independent performance test. Its guide puts the practical trade-off plainly: “It’s easy to chase maximum speed numbers on the box. But without precision, a fast printer just gives you a bad print faster.” Prusa Research’s buying guide

For your shortlist, look for evidence that a machine can deliver the surface quality and repeatability your jobs require at a pace you can use. Treat speed and quality as separate considerations, and do not assume a particular motion system or advertised speed guarantees good results. A reliable first attempt can save the time and material that reprints consume.

2. Build volume that matches your parts and your space
Start with the largest part you expect to print in one piece. Then compare the printer’s usable build volume with the machine’s overall dimensions and the space available on your desk or workbench. A large build area is useful only if you need it and have room for the printer.

Prusa’s guide describes medium-sized printers as sufficient for most everyday projects and notes that large props can often be printed in sections. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule; whether splitting a part is acceptable depends on its shape, strength requirements, and willingness to assemble it afterward. Prusa Research’s buying guide
3. Material support that fits the intended use
Choose a printer for the materials your parts actually require, not a broad label such as “high temperature.” PLA is commonly suited to ordinary indoor objects. Parts that need heat resistance, flexibility, or outdoor durability may call for other materials and a machine with the right nozzle and chamber conditions.

Before buying, check the exact model’s supported-material list and its temperature limits. The Creality K2 family illustrates why the model name matters: Creality publishes different supported filaments and nozzle and bed temperatures across the K2, K2 Pro, and K2 Plus. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent verification of print performance; confirm the current configuration and availability in your region. Creality’s K2 comparison
4. A setup and maintenance path you will accept
A preassembled printer is the more direct route if you want to get started without building the machine. A kit may cost less and can teach you how the printer works, but it asks you to do more assembly. These are general distinctions in Prusa’s guide, not promises about the setup time or value of a particular model. Prusa Research’s buying guide

Consider how comfortable you are with assembly, calibration, and routine maintenance. A machine that suits your patience and skills is a better fit than one chosen solely for its feature list.
5. First-layer and print-recovery aids
Automatic bed leveling, filament sensing, and power-loss recovery are useful features to check. They can reduce recurring setup trouble or help limit the disruption from an interrupted job, but they do not guarantee a perfect first layer or prevent every failed print. Decide whether each feature addresses a problem you expect to encounter rather than treating the presence of a sensor as a reliability guarantee. Prusa Research’s buying guide

Compare exact models, not just product families
When you have two or more candidates, compare the specifications that affect your workflow. The Creality K2 family is an example of why a family name alone is not enough. Its official comparison lists the following volumes and nozzle temperatures; these are vendor-published specifications, not independent test results. The page’s descriptions also warrant careful checking: its table lists the K2 as enclosed and the Pro and Plus as open frame, while its family-level text says a heated chamber is limited to the Pro and Plus. Verify the exact current configuration with the manufacturer before purchase.
| Model | Listed build volume | Listed nozzle temperature | Frame and chamber notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creality K2 | 260 × 260 × 260 mm | 300°C | Comparison table lists enclosed; heated chamber not listed for this model |
| Creality K2 Pro | 300 × 300 × 300 mm | 300°C | Comparison table lists open frame; family-level text limits heated chamber to Pro and Plus |
| Creality K2 Plus | 350 × 350 × 350 mm | 350°C | Comparison table lists open frame; family-level text limits heated chamber to Pro and Plus |
Creality’s page also lists different supported filaments and bed temperatures across the models. It says up to 16 colors are available through four CFS units. Treat these as manufacturer statements about the cited family configuration, not a general capability of every K2 setup. Consult the live comparison for the complete material and temperature details. Do you need an enclosed 3D printer?
An open-frame printer can offer convenient access for maintenance and is described by Prusa as suitable for everyday PLA and PETG use. An enclosed chamber can help stabilize conditions for materials such as ASA or nylon. These are selection considerations, not guarantees that every material will print successfully in every enclosed machine. Prusa Research’s buying guide
An enclosure by itself does not make printing safe or remove the need to consider ventilation, emissions, supervision, and the manufacturer’s instructions. If the printer will be used in a shared space, factor those considerations into the location and model you choose.
When resin printing is the better fit
FDM and resin printers are not interchangeable choices. Resin printing is used when very fine detail is the priority, but it involves liquid photopolymer, protective gear, ventilation, and washing and post-processing. Prusa’s guide describes resin printing as better suited to a professional environment or dedicated workshop than a home office; that is manufacturer-authored guidance, and the practical requirements depend on the equipment and its instructions.
