1. NOAA Weather Radio
Prioritize a radio that receives NOAA Weather Radio alerts, including tone alerts. FEMA recommends a battery-powered or hand-crank radio with that capability and extra batteries. Its hurricane checklist also names an AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries. Check the exact model specifications rather than assuming every emergency radio supports NOAA alerts or tone-alert reception. Decide how you will power it and keep any required spare batteries with it.
2. Flashlight and spare batteries
FEMA’s emergency-kit and hurricane checklists include a flashlight and extra batteries. For a portable option, consider whether its size and weight suit where you plan to keep it, and verify its power requirements and operating modes in the manufacturer’s specifications. A rechargeable light may be convenient, but make sure your charging plan accounts for an outage.

3. Portable phone charger or spare battery
FEMA recommends an extra cell-phone battery or charger, and Ready.gov advises having alternative charging methods for power outages. Check that a charger is compatible with your phone and that its stated capacity suits your plan. A capacity figure alone does not establish how many times it will recharge a particular phone, so do not rely on an assumed charge count.
4. Multi-purpose tool
FEMA’s hurricane checklist names a multi-purpose tool. Compare tools by the functions the manufacturer documents and by whether those functions match your intended, lawful uses. The checklist does not endorse a model or establish that a pocket tool is suitable for utility work.

FEMA names a first-aid kit in its preparedness checklists. A compact kit may make sense in a small pouch or go-bag, even if it is not part of everyday pocket carry. Choose one appropriate to your household and learn how to use its contents. The checklist does not specify kit contents or a particular standard.

How to choose gadgets that fit your plan
- Check the actual specifications. For radios, confirm NOAA Weather Radio reception and tone-alert capability. For lights and tools, verify the maker’s stated power requirements, modes, and included functions.
- Plan for power. Know whether each device uses replaceable batteries, rechargeable power, or both, and keep compatible spares or a charging method available.
- Match carry size to use. Compare documented dimensions and weight with where you will store or carry the item, whether that is a pocket, bag, or household kit.
- Verify claims about weather resistance. Use the specific model’s documented rating and understand what it covers; do not infer a rating from the product category or its appearance.
- Fit the household, not an idealized checklist. FEMA describes its supply checklist as a starting point and advises considering a family’s particular needs.
What else should you prepare before a hurricane?
These five gadget roles cover only a small part of preparedness. FEMA’s 2024 emergency supply-kit checklist recommends one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. Its 2020 hurricane checklist calls for at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Include these alongside other supplies suited to your household, and make an evacuation plan that follows local guidance.
