5 Easy Maker Projects You Can Start Without a Workshop

Try five approachable maker projects, from recycled-cardboard models and simple circuits to automata and a first small woodworking build.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can start making with recycled cardboard, scissors, tape, and glue—no workshop required. These five projects move from simple models to basic circuits, moving mechanisms, and a first wood build, so you can choose based on the materials and tools you already have.

Which beginner maker project should you choose?

Start with the kind of making you want to try: shaping a model, adding lights, creating motion, or working with wood. The cardboard projects use common household materials; circuits need appropriate components, while woodworking depends on the tools required by the particular plan.

Project Materials or supplies Result Special equipment
Recycled-cardboard prototype Cardboard, recycled pieces, scissors, tape or glue, pencil, ruler, coloring supplies Static model you can revise None beyond basic craft supplies
Light-up cardboard picture Cardboard base and circuit components specified for the chosen activity Electronic picture with lights Suitable circuit components; soldering is not required for the described cardboard-circuit approach
Push alarm Scrappy Circuits core bricks and materials specified by the project Interactive electronic project Scrappy Circuits components
Cardboard automaton Cardboard and project materials specified in the activity Moving model No full woodworking shop
Small woodworking build Wood and the supplies specified by the selected plan Functional wood project, such as a birdhouse or planter Cutting and fastening tools required by that plan

The project pages do not provide directly comparable time or cost figures, so use the materials and tool requirements—not a time or price ranking—to decide where to begin.

1. Build a recycled-cardboard prototype

This is the most straightforward choice if you have no specialized supplies. DIY.org’s “Tell Us Your Big Idea!” activity uses cardboard and recycled materials to turn a sketch into a model, then encourages trying a change.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Gather

  • Cardboard and clean recycled materials
  • Scissors, tape or glue, pencil, and ruler
  • Coloring supplies, if you want to decorate the model

Make and improve it

  1. Sketch the object or idea you want to model.
  2. Measure and mark shapes on the cardboard.
  3. Cut the pieces and assemble them with tape or glue.
  4. Add recycled pieces to represent details or features.
  5. Test one change—for example, adjust a part’s position or shape—and see how the model works.

DIY.org recommends adult supervision when cutting and suggests that an adult pre-cut pieces for younger children. The project is useful for practicing planning and iteration: the model does not need to be perfect before you learn from it.

2. Make a light-up cardboard picture

If you want an introduction to electronics without soldering, use cardboard as the picture’s base and build a simple circuit. Microsoft’s Cardboard Circuits guide describes connections made with crocodile clips, binder clips, or paper clips rather than solder.

Maker Camp includes “Light Up Picture” among its Scrappy Circuits starter projects. Follow the instructions for the selected activity and use only its recommended bricks or components; the no-solder approach does not mean that arbitrary components can be connected safely or reliably.

3. Make a simple push alarm

A push alarm is another entry point into interactive electronics. Maker Camp lists it as a starter project using Scrappy Circuits’ core bricks, alongside projects such as Morse code, Falling Target, and Superhero Signal. Its approach is presented as requiring neither soldering nor expensive equipment.

Use the project instructions to identify the required core bricks and assemble the alarm as directed. This is a good choice if you want to see how a simple input can trigger a response, rather than make a static circuit picture.

4. Build a moving cardboard automaton

A cardboard automaton adds motion without requiring a full woodworking shop. Science Buddies’ Make Cardboard Automata activity uses a moving caterpillar as an example and notes that the idea can be adapted to another animal or object.

5. Try a small woodworking build

If working with wood is your goal, begin with a manageable plan such as a birdhouse or planter. Ana White’s beginner woodworking guidance recommends choosing a project first, learning the skills it requires, and adding tools as later projects call for them.

Before starting, read the selected plan’s materials list and instructions. Identify exactly which cutting and fastening tools it calls for, and make sure you can use them safely or get appropriate help. Unlike the cardboard projects, woodworking requirements vary with the plan, so there is no single tool list that applies to every beginner build.

What tools do you need for a project?

For the cardboard prototype, the basic list is cardboard, scissors, tape or glue, pencil, ruler, and optional coloring supplies. A light-up picture or push alarm needs the specified circuit components. An automaton needs the materials in its activity, and a wood build needs the cutting and fastening tools named in its particular plan.

Choose the project whose requirements you can meet safely with what you have. For children, follow the activity’s supervision guidance, especially around cutting.
