5 Docker Containers to Try This Weekend to See What Your Home Lab Is Doing

Explore resource monitoring, availability checks, and dashboards with five home-lab Docker experiments, from Beszel and Netdata to Glances and Uptime Kuma.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To understand a home lab, start by separating three questions: what is using the host’s resources, which services are responding, and where can you see or reach everything? Beszel, Netdata and Glances address resource visibility; Uptime Kuma is an availability-monitoring candidate; and a dashboard or launcher can put service links in one place. These are experiments, not a ranked list: no single container explains every failure, and the available project documentation does not establish five equally verified setup recommendations.

Pick the question you want to answer

Job What it tells you What it cannot tell you by itself
Resource monitoring How the host and containers use resources such as CPU, memory, storage, and network, sometimes with history and alerts. Why an application is misbehaving or whether its users can reach it.
Availability monitoring Whether a service or endpoint responds to checks. Whether the host is overloaded or what caused a failed response.
Dashboard or launcher A consolidated view or convenient links to services. Resource or uptime measurements unless those features are specifically provided.

These roles can overlap. A busy container seen in resource metrics and a failed endpoint seen by an availability check are useful clues, but neither necessarily identifies an application-level cause. Choose a first experiment based on the symptom you want to understand.

1. Beszel: inspect Docker and host activity with a hub and agent

Beszel is a practical starting point if you want Docker statistics, historical data, and alerts. Its design uses a hub and an agent, and the project documents installation with Docker or Podman. The agent gathers information from the machine it runs on, so this is more than simply opening a dashboard container.

The documented Docker Compose example includes a read-only mount of the Docker socket for the agent. Read-only describes the mount setting; it does not make access to the Docker API risk-free. Treat socket access as a meaningful trust boundary, and use the project’s current instructions rather than copying a configuration without understanding what it exposes. Beszel’s example also includes network and host-mode configuration. Before exposing the hub beyond your LAN, review the network boundary and the project’s current security guidance.

Beszel can also use network probes to report response time and packet loss. Some host metrics, including sensor and storage-related information, may be unavailable from a container or need additional configuration, so do not assume the initial view will include every hardware reading.

Start here if you want a self-hosted view of container activity over time and are comfortable configuring an agent. Official documentation: getting started and network monitoring.

2. Netdata: look closely at container-level behavior

Netdata’s Docker documentation describes monitoring container CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, state, and health information. Its discovery documentation says it can find running containers and generate collector jobs for services. That makes it a useful experiment when the question is not merely “is the service up?” but “what is this container doing?”

The official Docker material describes local collection through the Docker API or socket and cgroups. Netdata’s hosted Homelab Cloud plan is optional and separate from the self-hosted agent; the vendor describes it as a way to manage dashboards, alerts, and multiple nodes. Its page displayed a price of $90 per year when accessed on October 7, 2026; pricing can change, so check the vendor page before making a decision. A hosted management layer is not required just to try the local collection approach.

Netdata describes per-second collection and container visibility in its Homelab plan material. That is the vendor’s description of the offering, not a guarantee that every metric will be available for every host or container setup. Consult its current Docker guidance for the collection configuration appropriate to your machine.

Choose Netdata if detailed container metrics and discovery are more important than a minimal setup. Official sources: Homelab plan, Docker installation and collection, and Docker container discovery.

3. Glances: try a compact, broad system overview

Glances presents itself as a cross-platform monitoring tool designed to fit a broad range of information into a compact interface. Its documentation covers a web interface and Docker topics, making it a candidate when you want a general system overview rather than a specialized uptime checker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available documentation establishes those capabilities, but not a complete beginner-ready Docker recipe for every environment. Treat Glances as an exploratory option: consult its current Docker and web-interface documentation for the exact deployment and access configuration that matches your host. Official documentation: Glances documentation.

4. Uptime Kuma: check whether services respond

Uptime Kuma appears in community and comparison sources as an uptime or availability-monitoring option. That is enough to make it worth considering for the distinct question, “Can I reach this service?” It is not a resource monitor substitute: an availability result alone does not show CPU, memory, or the reason a service stopped responding.

  • Equipped with a blazing fast AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 3.60 GHz processor.
  • Pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, this mini PC is ready to handle all your business tasks with ease.

The sources available here do not establish official setup details or a feature-by-feature account, so verify current installation and monitoring options in the project’s own documentation before deploying it. For context, see the community discussion about choosing a home-lab dashboard and a comparison of uptime-monitoring services.

5. Add a dashboard or launcher for the view you are missing

A dashboard or launcher is a different kind of fifth experiment: it can give you a convenient landing page or links to services, but that convenience does not make it a monitoring system. The available evidence does not establish one particular dashboard container’s current features, official setup, or suitability, so this is a category to choose deliberately rather than a verified product recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the community discussion about a central home-lab dashboard to clarify what you want on that page, then check the chosen project’s own documentation. If you primarily need to diagnose resource consumption, a launcher will not answer that question; if you only need service links, a full monitoring stack may be unnecessary.

Plan a weekend experiment without overbuilding

  1. Write down the question. For example: “Which container spikes memory?” calls for resource monitoring; “Does this endpoint respond?” calls for availability monitoring; “Where are my service links?” calls for a dashboard.
  2. Choose one starting point. Try Beszel or Netdata for container and host visibility, Glances for a broad overview, or an availability monitor for response checks. Add a dashboard only if a consolidated view is the missing piece.
  3. Keep the deployment boundary clear. Prefer local access while learning. If a configuration needs Docker socket access or host/network settings, understand what those permissions and network choices expose before applying them, especially for access beyond the LAN.
  4. Observe a real workload. Use the host and containers you already run, and look for a change over time rather than treating one status view as a diagnosis. No special hardware model is established as necessary; an existing Docker-capable spare computer may be enough depending on workload.
  5. Pair evidence when investigating a problem. A resource monitor can reveal a busy container, while an availability check can reveal an endpoint that is not responding. Use application logs and service-specific diagnostics to pursue the cause.
