Five questions help expose the key trade-offs: what to measure, how agentic workloads use CPUs, whether data can move fast enough, whether software improves efficiency, and how security is built into the data path. They are a practical evaluation framework—not a universal formula for profitability.
1. Are you measuring what actually drives AI factory revenue?
Raw compute capacity is not the same as productive output. An AI factory’s value depends on the workload it serves and what customers or internal teams can usefully do with that output. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s statement, “Compute is revenue,” is best read as vendor framing: compute enables token generation, but tokens alone do not establish revenue or business value.

Measure performance at the operating point that matches the work. Batch processing can prioritize throughput; real-time chat is sensitive to response delay; agentic systems may need to complete several model and tool steps. Useful indicators include:
- Tokens per watt: token throughput relative to energy consumed for the measured workload.
- Cost per token: a unit-cost measure that should specify which infrastructure, software and operating costs are included.
- Time to first token (TTFT): how long a user waits before a response begins.
- Mean time between interruptions (MTBI): a reliability measure for how often service is interrupted.
- Platform useful life: how long the system remains productive for its intended workloads.
These measures can conflict. A configuration tuned for high batch throughput may not provide the latency needed for interactive service. Compare alternatives on the same workload and service target, and account for utilization, uptime, power, cooling, operating costs and useful life—not just peak throughput.

2. How does agentic AI change what your CPU needs to deliver?
Agentic systems can alternate between model reasoning and software actions. In one common pattern, a model reasons on a GPU, a CPU executes a tool call such as retrieving data or compiling code, and the result returns to the model. A slow CPU-side step can extend the whole loop even when the GPU is capable of running the model quickly.
That makes per-core performance and memory latency relevant alongside accelerator capacity. Evaluate the complete task path: how quickly tool calls finish, how much time the model spends waiting, and whether the combined system meets the service target at realistic concurrency. CPU requirements depend on the tools, data access patterns and workload; they cannot be inferred from the model’s GPU needs alone.
3. Is networking and storage built for AI traffic and data volumes?
AI infrastructure moves data at several levels. The common terms are scale-up for accelerator interconnect within a system, scale-out for networking across servers, and scale-across for links between sites. These describe different parts of the architecture, not a guarantee that any specific network or storage design will suit a workload.

- Space Saving: Maximum depth: 14.8". Use the wall mount network cabinet to maximize available space for retail locations, classrooms, back offices, network cabinets, and other locations where space is limited.
- Fast Heat Dissipation: The server cabinet is designed with vents to optimize airflow and avoid critical IT equipment overheating. Heat sink holes in the top, bottom, and rear panels are more conducive to heat dissipation.
- Sturdy Construction: Robust welded frame construction for durability and long service life. With 100 lbs wall-mounted load capacity and 200 lbs ground-mounted load capacity, you can place multiple devices in the server rack cabinet as needed.
- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
Slow transfers or storage access can leave accelerators waiting rather than processing. This can matter in agentic applications that maintain state and working memory across long contexts or multiple sessions. When assessing a design, identify where data lives, how frequently it must move, and whether the bottleneck is inside a server, between servers, or between sites. Validate the actual workload rather than assuming that a high-speed component by itself removes end-to-end delays.
4. Does the software stack improve economics at scale?
Production software can make open-source development usable in deployed systems, but a software label is not evidence of lower costs. The relevant question is whether the stack improves measured performance, reliability or manageability for the workload being deployed.
Track cost per token or task before and after a software change under comparable conditions. Include the operating environment and workload, and check that a throughput gain does not come at the expense of latency, reliability or another requirement. Continued performance improvement may extend the productive life of hardware, but that benefit must be demonstrated in the system being evaluated.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
5. Is security built into the AI data path?
Security needs to cover data at rest, in transit and in use. AI factories also need controls governing what agents can access and which actions they can take. Hardware-rooted attestation is one architectural consideration for confidential computing, but mentioning a control does not establish that a particular product meets a specific security standard.

For scale context, Deloitte’s 2026 survey of 515 U.S. leaders at enterprises with more than $500 million in annual revenue, fielded in December 2025, found that over 70% of respondents expected to scale AI factory and AI-at-the-edge deployments by 2028. In the same survey, 61% expected average monthly token consumption above 10 billion by 2028. These are expectations reported by respondents, not outcomes already achieved.
A 2026 Principled Technologies report offers one bounded cost example, not a generic cloud-versus-on-premises verdict. Its five-year modeled scenario for Llama 3 8B covered development, data processing, fine-tuning and inference, using two Dell PowerEdge XE9680 servers with eight NVIDIA H200 GPUs each for fine-tuning and inference. The report gave totals of $2,121,094 for a traditional on-premises Dell AI Factory, $2,295,265 for Dell APEX Infrastructure and $3,429,853 for AWS SageMaker. Pricing research was completed August 27, 2025, and prices can change. Cloud management costs were excluded; on-premises administration and physical facility power and cooling were included; Dell CAPEX working capital and depreciation were excluded. The report also cautioned that the compared tools and offerings were not feature-matched in every respect.

Those assumptions materially shape the comparison. A different workload, utilization profile, financing structure, region, facility or management-cost treatment could produce a different result. Use modeled comparisons to identify questions and cost categories, not to claim a universal saving or payback period.
Why power and useful life belong in the calculation
Power availability can constrain infrastructure choices because AI data centers use GPUs and require substantially more cooling and energy than conventional data centers. That qualitative observation appears in a 2025 Business at OECD (BIAC) submission hosted by the OECD; it is not an OECD statistical estimate.
Useful life also affects economics, but a single example should not be generalized. NVIDIA says its A100 GPU shipped in 2020 and remained in commercial service six years later. That vendor example shows why productive life and continuing demand matter; it does not establish how long every GPU or AI factory will operate profitably.
