A single host is often enough for a small, low-risk application. Add a reverse proxy when you need clean HTTPS termination, static-file delivery, or safer process isolation. Move to a load balancer when multiple application instances must share traffic and survive instance failures. Containers improve packaging consistency, while Kubernetes is justified only when you need broad orchestration across many services. Managed and serverless platforms reduce host administration at the cost of some control and portability.

Compare the five setups
| Setup | Operational effort | Scaling model | Fault tolerance | Main strengths | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single host | Lowest | Mostly vertical | Low | Simple, portable, predictable host cost | One failure domain; resource contention and maintenance downtime |
| Reverse proxy plus application server | Low to medium | Usually one application host unless extended | Better process isolation, but still one host by default | TLS termination, routing, static files, access controls | Proxy configuration and another component to maintain |
| Load balancer plus multiple application servers | Medium | Horizontal across backends | Higher when backends and zones are independent | Health checks, traffic distribution, failure isolation | Shared state, observability, networking, and deployment coordination |
| Containers, with or without Kubernetes | Medium to high | Horizontal and per-service | Depends on replicas, cluster design, and data services | Repeatable environments, isolation, independent service deployment | Image, registry, networking, and orchestration complexity |
| Managed platform or serverless backend | Low infrastructure effort | Provider-managed or configured autoscaling | Provider-dependent, often built in | Less host administration and quick delivery | Usage-based cost, platform limits, and provider coupling |
The practical choice is usually incremental. Start with the smallest pattern that meets the risk you can accept, then add a layer only when a concrete requirement demands it.
1. Single server: web server and application on one host
In a single-server setup, the web server, application process, and often the database share one physical machine or virtual machine. The web server may serve files and forward dynamic requests locally, but every major component remains inside one failure and maintenance boundary.

When this setup fits
- A prototype, internal tool, brochure site, or small application with modest traffic.
- A team that values straightforward deployment over redundancy.
- A workload whose downtime and recovery objectives are forgiving.
How to structure it safely
- Run the application as a managed service rather than an interactive shell process, so it can restart after a crash or reboot.
- Keep the database and uploaded files on separate volumes or an external service when losing the host would otherwise lose data.
- Restrict inbound network access to the ports that must be public; keep administration and database ports private.
- Schedule backups and test restoring them. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, process health, and backup success before traffic grows.
What limits growth
Vertical scaling means giving the same host more CPU, memory, or storage. That can postpone a redesign, but it does not remove the single point of failure. A host reboot, kernel update, disk failure, or overloaded database can affect every part of the application at once. Components also compete for resources: a memory-heavy background job can starve web workers, while database I/O can increase request latency.
2. Reverse proxy in front of one application server
A reverse proxy is a public-facing server that accepts client connections and forwards requests to an application process on a private interface. NGINX is a common implementation, but the pattern also applies to other proxies. NGINX documentation describes reverse-proxy and load-balancing roles; its proxy can terminate TLS, route by host or path, serve static files, and apply access rules before a request reaches the application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What changes compared with a single host
- TLS termination: the proxy handles HTTPS certificates and encrypted client connections, while the application can use a local connection.
- Request routing: hostnames or URL paths can select different application processes, APIs, or static directories.
- Static delivery: cacheable assets can be served without consuming application workers.
- Process isolation: the application need not listen on a public network interface.
- Policy enforcement: request-size limits, allow/deny rules, and timeout policies can be applied at the edge.
Typical request flow
- A browser resolves the public hostname and opens an HTTPS connection to the proxy.
- The proxy completes the TLS handshake and evaluates the host, path, and access rules.
- Static requests are returned directly when configured; dynamic requests are forwarded to the application’s private address and port.
- The proxy returns the application response, applying configured buffering, compression, and timeout behavior.
This arrangement can still run on one machine, so it does not automatically provide high availability. If the host fails, both proxy and application disappear. It is best understood as a traffic-control and isolation improvement, not as redundancy by itself.

3. Multiple application servers behind a load balancer
When one application instance cannot provide the required capacity or availability, place two or more instances behind a load balancer. The balancer becomes the public entry point and distributes requests only to healthy backends. AWS describes an Application Load Balancer distributing traffic across Availability Zones and performing health checks. Azure distinguishes Layer-7 proxy load balancing from Layer-4 transport balancing, while Google describes its Application Load Balancer as a proxy-based Layer-7 service for HTTP and HTTPS backends.
Layer 7 versus Layer 4
- Layer 7 (HTTP/HTTPS): understands requests and can route by hostname, path, headers, or other HTTP attributes. It can terminate TLS and apply request-aware policies.
- Layer 4 (TCP/UDP): balances transport connections with less knowledge of the request itself. It is useful for protocols that are not HTTP or when preserving lower-level connection behavior matters.
Layer-7 awareness is powerful, but it does not make application state disappear. If a user’s session lives only in one process’s memory, a later request sent to another instance may fail. Use a shared session store, stateless tokens, or deliberate connection affinity where appropriate. Uploaded files, background jobs, caches, and database connections also need a shared or coordinated design.
Implementation checklist
- Create at least two application instances that can be replaced independently.
- Expose only the health and application ports required by the balancer; keep administration paths private.
- Define a health check that proves the instance can actually serve requests, not merely that a process is listening.
- Place instances in separate failure domains, such as Availability Zones, when the platform supports it.
- Instrument request rate, latency, error rate, backend saturation, health-check failures, and rejected connections.
- Test draining and replacement so deployments do not abruptly terminate active requests.
A load balancer improves utilization and failure isolation, but high availability extends beyond the balancer. Backends, databases, queues, caches, DNS, health checks, deployment tooling, and state management must also avoid a hidden single point of failure. The AWS Well-Architected guidance dated 2023-10-03 summarizes the role this way: “Load balancers act as the entry point for your workload, from which point they distribute the traffic to your backend targets, such as compute instances or containers, to improve utilization.”

4. Containerized application, with or without Kubernetes
Containers package an application together with its runtime libraries and configuration assumptions into an image. The same image can move from development to testing and production, reducing “works on my machine” differences. A managed container service such as ECS with Fargate or Azure Web App for Containers can run images without requiring the team to administer every host detail.
When containers are useful
- Builds must be reproducible across environments.
- Different services need independent release or scaling schedules.
- Dependencies should be isolated from one another.
- A team already has image registries, automated builds, and deployment controls.
What Kubernetes adds
Kubernetes supplies a control plane for scheduling containers, rolling out Deployments, grouping workloads with namespaces, and exposing them through Services and gateway or ingress mechanisms. Google’s service architecture guidance describes a Kubernetes Service as exposing a set of pods as one entity. NGINX Gateway Fabric implements Gateway API behavior for load balancing, reverse proxying, and API-gateway use cases.
Kubernetes is therefore an orchestration platform, not simply a container runtime. It introduces cluster upgrades, node capacity, network policy, identity, secrets, observability, and recovery procedures. Use it when many services, teams, environments, or deployment policies justify that platform effort. For one small application, a managed container service can provide the packaging benefits without the full control-plane burden.

Container deployment safeguards
- Pin base-image versions and scan images before release.
- Keep configuration and secrets outside the image, supplied through the platform’s configuration mechanisms.
- Define CPU, memory, startup, readiness, and liveness behavior so the scheduler can make sensible decisions.
- Send logs and metrics to a central system; a container’s local filesystem may be temporary.
- Design graceful shutdown so in-flight requests finish during replacement.
5. Managed platforms and serverless backends
Managed and serverless services supply the runtime, scaling controls, and much of the underlying infrastructure. AWS reference architectures use Fargate for serverless compute. Google documents Cloud Run as a backend for an Application Load Balancer. Azure App Service provides managed web hosting and Web App for Containers.
Why teams choose this model
- Developers can deploy application code without building and patching a server fleet.
- Scaling rules, certificates, health handling, and integration with identity or logging are available as platform features.
- Small teams can spend more time on product behavior than on host maintenance.
Trade-offs to evaluate
- Provider limits: maximum request duration, concurrency, memory, storage, networking, or deployment size can shape the design.
- Variable cost: usage-based billing changes with requests, compute time, memory, and supporting services; there is no universal cheapest option.
- Less low-level control: kernel settings, specialized networking, and unusual runtime requirements may not be available.
- Portability: platform APIs, identity systems, queues, and deployment formats can make a later migration labor-intensive.
- Cold-start or scaling behavior: workloads with strict latency targets should measure startup and scale-out behavior under realistic traffic.
“Serverless” does not mean there are no servers. It means the provider operates them while you manage application configuration, code, data, and scaling policies. Review regional availability, quotas, pricing, and service names at deployment time because those details change.
How to choose without overbuilding
Choose a single host when simplicity is the priority
Select it for a low-risk application where a short outage is acceptable and one team can monitor and restore the machine. Plan backups and a migration path before usage makes the host critical.
Best Value
Add a reverse proxy for edge control
Use this step when HTTPS management, static assets, host/path routing, or keeping the application off the public network matters. It is a natural intermediate architecture and can later sit in front of multiple instances.
Use a load balancer for uptime or horizontal capacity
Choose it when one instance cannot meet peak demand, when deployments must avoid a full outage, or when surviving an instance or zone failure is a requirement. Budget time for shared state and health-check design, not just the balancer itself.

Containerize when reproducible packaging, isolation, or separate service lifecycles produce measurable value. Prefer a managed container runtime if you do not need Kubernetes-specific orchestration.
Choose managed or serverless hosting to reduce infrastructure work
This fits teams that prefer provider-operated scaling and patching over low-level control. Model traffic-driven cost and document platform-specific dependencies before committing core data or workflows.
A practical progression
- Start with one application process and a durable backup strategy.
- Place a reverse proxy in front when TLS, static delivery, or routing becomes operationally important.
- Separate the database and file storage before introducing multiple application instances.
- Add a load balancer and at least two independently replaceable backends when availability or scale requires it.
- Package the application as a container if environment drift or service boundaries are slowing delivery.
- Move to Kubernetes only after the number of services and operational policies justify cluster management; otherwise use a managed container or application platform.
Failure modes to check before launch
- One hidden host: a proxy, database, or storage volume still runs on the same machine despite an apparently distributed front end.
- Bad health checks: the balancer marks an instance healthy because its port is open even though dependencies or migrations make it unable to serve.
- Memory-only sessions: users lose authentication when requests move between replicas.
- Local files in ephemeral environments: uploads vanish when a container or serverless instance is replaced.
- Unbounded retries: a failing backend receives a storm of retries that increases the outage.
- Unmeasured autoscaling: instances scale out, but the database, queue, or downstream API becomes the bottleneck.
- Uncoordinated deployments: incompatible application and database versions are released together without a rollback plan.
Document the intended failure boundaries, recovery time objective, recovery point objective, state locations, health checks, and rollback procedure. Those decisions determine whether a diagram is merely more complex or genuinely more resilient.
