These five PlayStation 2 games could benefit from more than sharper textures: each has a story, world, or multiplayer idea worth rebuilding for modern play. The picks are a personal wishlist, not announced projects. Here, “remake” means rebuilding a game for modern hardware while keeping its core story and design; a remaster is a technical update or reissue. SVG’s October 6, 2026 list makes the same distinction.
What makes a PS2 game worth remaking?
A strong remake candidate needs more than nostalgia. The best cases pair a distinctive original with specific ways modern design could improve how it plays or how its story lands. A remaster or collection can make an older game easier to revisit, but it does not automatically deliver a ground-up rebuild.

The PlayStation 2 library is a deep source of candidates: PlayStation Blog Deutschland cited about 160 million PS2 units sold and a library of about 4,000 games in its 2020 article. Those are historical figures from that article, not current sales or a newly verified count. The five choices below are editorial preferences, not a ranked or scored industry consensus.

1. Final Fantasy X
Why it deserves a fresh version
Final Fantasy X’s journey through Spira, led by Tidus, remains a natural fit for a modern role-playing-game remake. A rebuilt version could give the story and its characters more room to breathe while adapting presentation and play for contemporary audiences. The proposal could also extend to Final Fantasy X-2, the 2003 sequel, as part of a remake line rather than treating the first game as an isolated project.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
That is a creative possibility, not a Square Enix announcement. The appeal is the chance to revisit a connected story across two games, not a claim that either remake is in development.
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Why the story still invites a remake
Metal Gear Solid 2 puts Raiden at the center of a story involving a threat aimed at the President. Its premise and perspective could be reintroduced for modern players with a ground-up remake, while preserving the unsettling, distinctive character of the original.
Rank #2
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
There is an important distinction between that wish and what Konami has actually announced. Konami identified Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater as a faithful remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, not MGS2. Konami also lists MGS2 in its METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 in its HD Collection version. That collection is a way to revisit the game, not an MGS2 remake.
3. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Why its world could support a bigger rebuild
The Precursor Legacy combines third-person action-platforming with a nonlinear world, side quests, and minigames. Those ingredients give a remake room to refresh movement, exploration, and the way optional activities fit into the world without losing the original’s identity.
Rank #3
- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
The PS3 Jak and Daxter Collection already included a remastered version, but a technical update is not the same as a full remake. A rebuild could reconsider how the world feels to traverse and how its activities connect, rather than stopping at an updated presentation.
4. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Why this prequel is a strong starting point
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is a 3D PS2 entry about the origins of the Dracula-Belmont feud. As an early chapter in the franchise chronology, it offers a coherent foundation for a remake that could introduce the conflict to newcomers while giving longtime fans a new way to experience its beginnings.
Rank #4
- Jimmy has been sent back behind enemy lines to steal the HO-IX flying wing, an experimental Nazi weapon
- To get it, you'll have to survive six major missions and 20 unique levels of gameplay
- There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs
- Use 20 authentic WWII weapons, from a Colt. 45 pistol to a German Panzerschrenk rocket launcher
- You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart
Its relative underappreciation is part of the case: revisiting a less prominent entry could give the series’ history attention beyond its better-known installments. Calling it the next game that should be remade is an opinion, not a Konami plan.

5. Resident Evil Outbreak
Why its cooperative premise deserves another chance
Resident Evil Outbreak takes players into Raccoon City through cooperative survival scenarios. Its online play used a PS2 online modem, according to the historical account in SVG’s list. A modern remake could rethink online infrastructure and third-person gameplay around a cooperative experience designed for current systems.
Best Value
- Mortal Kombat: Armageddon PS2
The sources cited here do not establish whether the original online service is available today, nor do they establish a Capcom remake announcement. The case for a remake rests on the concept: surviving a disaster together is a strong basis for a purpose-built modern game.

The terms matter when deciding whether a classic has actually received the treatment being wished for. A remake rebuilds the game; a remaster or collection updates or republishes an existing version. Publishers may use their own terminology, so a specific announcement is the best guide. For example, PlayStation describes MGS Delta as an MGS3 remake and contrasts that with a remastered collection offering upgraded graphics and an option to switch back to the original polygon look.
| Game | What makes a remake appealing | Existing status established by these sources |
|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy X | A modern retelling of Tidus and Spira, potentially extending to Final Fantasy X-2. | No remake announcement established. |
| Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty | A new version of Raiden’s story and its threat to the President. | Included in Master Collection Vol. 1 in its HD Collection version; Konami’s announced MGS remake is MGS3, not MGS2. |
| Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy | A rebuilt nonlinear world with renewed action-platforming and exploration. | A remastered version appeared in the PS3 Jak and Daxter Collection; no remake announcement established. |
| Castlevania: Lament of Innocence | A fresh take on the origins of the Dracula-Belmont feud. | No remake announcement established. |
| Resident Evil Outbreak | Modern cooperative survival with reconsidered online play and third-person gameplay. | No remake announcement established; current online-service availability is not established here. |
Which remake would matter most?
Each pick makes a different argument. Final Fantasy X offers an expansive story with a sequel that could support a larger project. MGS2 has a specific story and lead character whose return would be distinct from the already announced MGS3 remake. Jak and Daxter and Lament of Innocence invite renewed attention to worlds and franchise history, while Outbreak has a cooperative premise that could be designed around modern online play. The right choice depends on whether a remake prioritizes narrative scope, a new take on familiar gameplay, or a multiplayer concept that needs rebuilding from the ground up.
