Five N64 games remain rewarding for different reasons: Super Mario 64 for open-ended platforming, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for its sense of adventure, Mario Kart 64 for repeatable races, Star Fox 64 for a change of pace, and GoldenEye 007 for objective-driven action and multiplayer. This is a genre-diverse selection, not a ranking; each game also carries some of the control or presentation conventions of its era.
Which N64 games still feel worth playing?
The strongest case for these five is that they offer distinct kinds of play rather than five versions of the same experience. Nintendo’s current N64 classics catalog includes all of them, though access depends on the service, platform, and regional catalog.

Nintendo lists the games with copyright years of 1996 for Super Mario 64, 1998 for Ocarina of Time, and 1997 for Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, and GoldenEye 007. Those are the years shown on Nintendo’s UK page, not a claim about each game’s exact launch date in every market. Nintendo says the N64 launched in the United States on September 29, 1996, alongside Super Mario 64.
Why each game still works—and who should play it
Super Mario 64: platforming built around choice
Super Mario 64 is a good pick if you enjoy exploring a space and deciding what to do there, rather than simply reaching the end of a fixed sequence of stages. One visit might be about racing a Koopa; another might involve finding a lost penguin or collecting red coins. Those changing goals give familiar worlds a reason to revisit them and make progress feel less linear.
#1 Best Overall

- REGION-FREE COMPATIBILITY: Supports compatible USA, European, and Japanese N64 consoles for flexible gaming across regions.
- DIVERSE GAMING GENRES: Enjoy a variety of games, including racing, adventure, fighting, and puzzle titles.
- GAME SAVE SUPPORT: Save your progress in compatible games and continue playing later.
- DOCUMENTATION INCLUDED: Includes Retrotech-printed instructions for a nostalgic retro gaming experience.
Its appeal is inseparable from the early-3D era, however. The camera and controls can take adjustment, particularly if you are accustomed to modern platformers. The game holds up best when you approach it as a landmark in exploratory 3D design, not as a title whose every interaction has aged seamlessly.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: a journey with room to explore
Choose Ocarina of Time for a longer solo adventure built around exploration, dungeons, and movement through varied settings. Its scale and sense of journey are central to its lasting appeal: it gives the player places to discover and a story that connects those places into a larger experience.
It is not a guarantee that every part will feel current. The interface and combat conventions come from an earlier era, so players used to newer action-adventure games may notice friction. Its strongest fit is someone willing to meet an influential adventure on its own terms.

Mario Kart 64 suits players looking for sessions that can be short, social, and easy to repeat. Imaginative track design gives races their character, while time trials offer a solo reason to return and improve a run. It is the clearest group-play choice here, especially if your interest is competing with friends rather than following a long campaign.
The original game is associated with local multiplayer. Today, Nintendo also promotes online races with friends through its service. That online option is a modern route to playing together, not the same setup as gathering around the original console.
Star Fox 64: a break from long adventures
Star Fox 64 fills the list’s space-shooter slot and offers a genre change from platforming, racing, and expansive adventure. It is the natural choice if you want variety in a short list of N64 games rather than another exploration-heavy game. The available sources establish its place in Nintendo’s current classics catalog and its 1997 copyright year, but do not provide enough detail to make precise claims here about route design, scoring, length, or how its controls compare with newer shooters.
Rank #3
- Don't forget the mini games! Challenge a seal to a race around the lagoon. go on a crazy mine cart ride, and be on the lookout for a blast from the past..
- Four Players can join in on super split screen action or duke it out in a single screen free for all.
- Use of the required Expansion Pak(not included) allows incredible real time lighting effects and massive environments.
GoldenEye 007: missions with multiplayer appeal
GoldenEye 007 remains notable for levels organized around objectives that change across difficulty settings, as well as multiplayer. It is best suited to players interested in mission-based action and in seeing how an N64-era shooter handled both solo goals and playing with others.
There are visible signs of age: its frame rate can be uneven, and its control conventions may feel unfamiliar next to contemporary shooters. Those limitations matter if smooth performance is your priority, but they do not erase the appeal of its level design and objective structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to play these games now
Nintendo offers a selection of N64 games on Switch and Switch 2 through a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo describes local multiplayer and online play for up to four players in compatible games, and specifically promotes online Mario Kart 64 races. The current catalog and terms can change; availability may also depend on platform and region.
- Subscription route: Check the N64 classics catalog on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 you plan to use. A paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access the library, according to Nintendo.
- Playing together: Multiplayer options vary by game. Nintendo describes local and online multiplayer for up to four players in compatible titles; do not assume every game supports every mode.
- Controller option: Nintendo lists a wireless Nintendo 64 controller for members as an optional way to play. Check Nintendo’s current availability and conditions for your region.
- Original hardware: Original cartridges are another route if you have compatible N64 hardware. Cartridge price, condition, and current stock vary, so check the specific listing rather than relying on a general estimate.
Nintendo cautions that reproduced games may differ in performance and presentation from the originals. A service version is therefore convenient access, but it should not be assumed to reproduce every detail of the original hardware experience exactly.
