In five-card draw, each player receives five private cards, bets, may discard and replace cards once, bets again, then shows down if more than one player remains. The strongest five-card poker hand wins the pot—or a player can win earlier if everyone else folds. Agree on the betting format and draw limit before dealing; house rules vary.
What you need to play
Five-card draw uses a standard 52-card deck, with no community cards in the basic game. Poker.org describes a two-to-five-player setup, but that is not a universal maximum: larger tables need a clear procedure for handling the draw, and venue rules or house rules take precedence. Before the first deal, settle three things: whether players post antes or blinds, what betting structure applies, and how many replacement cards each player may take.

How a hand of five-card draw works
- Set the stakes and betting rules. Players may contribute an ante before cards are dealt, or the table may use blinds. Choose fixed-limit, pot-limit, or no-limit betting; these formats affect wager sizes, not the basic sequence of the hand. Agree on the draw limit as well. PokerNews’ rules guide
- Deal five cards face down to each player. Each player has a complete private hand. There are no shared community cards in the basic game. PokerStars’ Five Card Draw rules
- Play the first betting round. Players act in turn and may fold or continue with an allowed action, such as checking, calling, betting, or raising, depending on what has happened and the table’s betting structure. The opening position depends on whether the game uses antes or blinds and on the venue or house rules.
- Draw replacement cards. Each player still in the hand chooses how many cards to discard and receives replacements. Keeping all five cards is called standing pat. A limit of up to three replacement cards is common in many variations, but it is not universal; confirm the table’s rule before play. - Play the second betting round. Players who remain wager again under the same agreed betting structure.
- Go to showdown if necessary. If more than one player remains, they reveal their hands. The best five-card hand wins; equal hands split the pot under PokerStars’ published rules. PokerStars’ rules

These are standard high-poker rankings. If no player has a qualifying combination, the high-card hand wins; ties are handled under the table’s rules. PokerNews’ ranking list
Which rules should players agree on?
- Ante or blinds: Choose how the pot is seeded and how the initial betting action is determined.
- Betting format: Fixed-limit, pot-limit, and no-limit change the permitted wager size. They do not change the deal-draw-bet-showdown order.
- Draw maximum: Set the number of cards a player may replace. Three is common in described variations, not a universal rule.
- Table procedure: Agree on who acts first and what happens if the draw would require more cards than are available. Rules differ by table and venue; for example, Pennsylvania’s published regulation specifies procedures for that jurisdiction, not every poker game. Pennsylvania Code § 637a.13
For a home game, stating these choices aloud before dealing prevents disputes over how many cards can be drawn, how much a player may bet, and who acts first.
