There is no single best cheap keyboard: the right choice depends on whether you need a numpad, wireless connectivity, a compact layout, or a more responsive feel for games. These five research-backed picks cover those priorities. The model assessments draw on RTINGS’ published testing, not independent hands-on testing for this article.
How to choose a budget keyboard
Start with the layout. Full-size keyboards include a numpad, TenKeyLess (TKL) models remove it but keep the function row and dedicated arrow keys, and compact boards save more desk space by dropping additional keys. Then consider whether a cable or wireless connection suits your desk and devices, and whether you prefer quiet scissor or rubber-dome keys or a mechanical-style feel.

Logitech K120: a straightforward wired, full-size option
The K120 is a corded USB keyboard with a numpad and plug-and-play setup. Logitech also lists a spill-resistant design, adjustable tilt legs, and deep-profile keys with a springy feel. It is a practical fit for a basic desktop setup if you want a familiar full-size layout and do not need wireless features. Keychron B33 or B36: quiet wireless everyday typing
RTINGS’ 2026 guide recommends the B33/B36 as its cheap-keyboard pick, with full-size and TKL versions available. Their deep scissor switches are quiet and comfortable, with 3.5 mm of travel intended to bridge the feel of standard scissor keys and mechanical keyboards. They are scissor-switch keyboards, not mechanical keyboards. Wireless connectivity and latency RTINGS considers suitable for occasional gaming make them flexible for everyday use, though they are not the choice here for competitive gaming. AULA F99 or F75: a softer mechanical feel
For a mechanical keyboard with a cushioned feel, RTINGS recommends the F99. It has a gasket-mounted design, PBT keycaps, internal case foam, and hot-swappable switches; it connects over Bluetooth or an included 2.4GHz receiver. The F75 is smaller and usually costs a bit less, according to the guide. The tradeoffs are a particularly soft typing feel, cheaper-feeling plastic, and configuration software RTINGS describes as less polished than some established brands. SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL: casual gaming without a numpad
The wired Apex 3 TKL keeps dedicated arrow keys and the function row while removing the numpad. RTINGS recommends it as a cheaper gaming option. Its rubber-dome switches are quieter than mechanical alternatives, and it includes a volume wheel, keys that can be assigned macros, and eight-zone RGB lighting. Logitech Pebble Keys 2 K380s: compact and easy to carry
The slim K380s connects over Bluetooth, can pair with up to three devices, and runs on AAA batteries. Its small footprint suits travel and cramped desks, but the circular keys and tighter spacing may take adjustment. Its compact layout also gives up dedicated arrow keys and a numpad. Tom’s Guide reported a three-year rated battery life, which depends on usage. The publication’s August 2025 article listed a $33 Amazon deal; that historical promotion is not a current price quote.
