5 Bluetooth LE Audio Features That Solve Classic Audio Limits

Bluetooth LE Audio brings LC3, synchronized streams, Auracast broadcasts, and hearing-aid support, but devices must implement the features you need.

Bluetooth LE Audio adds five capabilities that traditional Bluetooth Classic audio does not provide in the same way: LC3 codec options, synchronized independent streams, one-to-many broadcasts, a standards-based path for hearing aids, and selectable audio streams such as different languages. Those are capabilities, not guaranteed improvements: devices need matching hardware and software, and manufacturers choose which features to implement.

What is Bluetooth LE Audio?

LE Audio is an audio architecture that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Traditional Bluetooth audio, often called Classic Audio, uses Bluetooth Classic radio. LE Audio depends on LE Isochronous Channels, introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2. The Bluetooth SIG completed the LE Audio specification set in July 2022, allowing products seeking LE Audio support to be qualified. Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio overview explains the feature set.

“Regular Bluetooth” is therefore not a single interchangeable mode. A phone and headphones must both implement compatible audio features. LE Audio is also not another name for Auracast: LE Audio is the broader architecture, while Auracast is a defined broadcast-audio configuration built on it.

1. LC3 gives manufacturers more sound-quality and power choices

LE Audio includes LC3, or Low Complexity Communications Codec. The Bluetooth SIG says listening tests found LC3 could provide better audio quality than SBC, the codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate. The comparison is the SIG’s account of those tests, not a guarantee that every LE Audio product will sound better than every Classic Audio product.

LC3 lets manufacturers make tradeoffs between audio quality and power use. The chosen settings, implementation, and product design affect the result; LE Audio does not promise that a particular headset will use less battery or sound better in every situation. Manufacturers may add optional or custom codecs alongside the required LC3 support.

2. Multi-Stream Audio can improve how wireless earbuds work together

Multi-Stream Audio supports multiple independent, synchronized audio streams between a source—such as a phone—and one or more audio devices. That gives true wireless earbud designers a way to send separate synchronized streams to the left and right earbuds, rather than relying on one earbud to relay audio to the other.

The Bluetooth SIG identifies improved stereo imaging and better voice-assistant use as potential benefits. They depend on the product’s implementation; the feature does not ensure that every pair of LE Audio earbuds will deliver the same experience.

3. Auracast enables one source to serve many listeners

Auracast broadcast audio allows a compatible source to send audio streams that many compatible receivers can join. That creates options for sharing audio with several people or listening to audio from a public display or venue system. A broadcast can be open or closed with a passkey, according to the Bluetooth SIG’s Auracast webinar FAQ.

Auracast is optional, even on LE Audio devices. A product may support LE Audio without transmitting or receiving Auracast broadcasts, so check the specific function in each device’s specifications.

4. LE Audio adds a standards-based route for hearing aids

LE Audio includes hearing-aid support, and Android’s developer documentation describes Hearing Aid Profile support for calls and VoIP. That can give compatible hearing aids and other audio devices a defined way to work with supported phones.

Compatibility still depends on the particular hearing aid, phone hardware, operating-system build, and supported profile. Google documents built-in LE Audio support at Android 13 (API level 33), but that version-specific platform statement does not establish support on every Android device or accessory. Check the documentation for both products. Android’s LE Audio documentation describes its platform support.

5. Broadcasts can make accessibility and language choice more flexible

A venue or broadcaster can offer separate Auracast streams, such as different language tracks, for listeners with compatible receivers. This can support more flexible listening than a single shared audio feed. Broadcasts may be public or access-controlled, and a listener needs a compatible receiver and the information or setup needed to select the intended stream.

The benefit depends on deployment: the transmitter must provide the relevant streams, receivers must support Auracast, and the venue or service must configure the system appropriately. The capability alone does not mean a particular location already offers it.

How LE Audio and Classic Audio differ

Aspect Classic Audio LE Audio
Radio and architecture Bluetooth Classic radio Bluetooth Low Energy radio; uses LE Isochronous Channels
Codec Includes SBC; other codec support depends on product Includes LC3; optional or custom codecs may also be supported
Multiple synchronized streams Does not provide LE Audio’s Multi-Stream Audio feature Supports independent, synchronized streams when implemented
Broadcast listening Does not provide Auracast broadcast audio Can support Auracast, but the feature is optional
Hearing-aid support Not the hearing-aid capability introduced with LE Audio Includes a hearing-aid support path; device and profile compatibility still matter
Compatibility Works with compatible Classic Audio devices Requires compatible LE Audio implementations; Classic Audio support on an LE Audio product is optional

Classic Audio remains useful, and a product may support both modes. But a Classic Audio headset is not automatically compatible with an LE Audio source, and an LE Audio label by itself does not tell you which optional features are present. The Bluetooth SIG addresses backward compatibility in its LE Audio FAQs.

What to check before buying or connecting devices

  • Confirm LE Audio on both ends. Check the phone or other source and the headphones, hearing aids, or receiver; support in one does not establish compatibility with the other.
  • Look for the exact feature. Verify LC3, Multi-Stream Audio, Auracast transmit or receive, or Hearing Aid Profile support as relevant to your use.
  • Do not rely on “Bluetooth 5.2” alone for Auracast. Auracast needs specific Core 5.2 features as well as the Public Broadcast Profile. The SIG recommends checking the manufacturer’s explicit feature claims.
  • Check software and device-specific details. An operating-system version can include platform support without guaranteeing that every device, build, or accessory exposes the feature.

For the general capability and compatibility details, see the Bluetooth SIG overview and its LE Audio FAQs.
