For Italian streaming, ExpressVPN is the strongest pick on the latest published testing. Top10VPN’s August 2026 Italy tests found it was the only one of the five providers below that unblocked every Italian service tried, including DAZN Italy. NordVPN is the speed pick, Proton VPN the Netflix Italy pick, Surfshark the lower-cost pick, and TunnelBear the free option, with tight limits. These are one publisher’s dated observations. Streaming services can block VPN connections at any time, so none of this is a guarantee.
First decide which direction you need
“VPN for Italy” means two different things, and the right server location depends on which one you mean.

- You are abroad and want Italian content (RaiPlay, Mediaset Infinity, Sky Italia, DAZN Italy, Netflix Italy): connect to an Italian server. This is the case where Italian city coverage matters.
- You are in Italy and want content from another country: connect to a server in that country. Comparitech’s Italy guide draws the same distinction.
Whichever you need, test the specific service you care about. Access is decided service by service, not by VPN brand.

Each pick in detail
ExpressVPN: best overall, and the one to try for DAZN Italy
Top10VPN reports Italian IP locations in Cosenza, Milan and Naples. That is the widest spread of the five, with a southern city included. It also reports streaming access in several other countries, which helps if you are in Italy and want foreign libraries. The notable result is DAZN Italy: it was the only provider here that passed. If sports are the reason you want a VPN, this is the dated evidence to weigh most heavily. Check current pricing on the provider’s site, since offers change.
NordVPN: best for speed
Top10VPN names it the speed pick and reports 60 Italian IP addresses across Milan, Rome and Palermo. It got through Netflix Italy, RaiPlay and Mediaset Infinity. It did not get into DAZN Italy, and Sky Italia results were inconsistent. That makes it a good fit for general streaming and downloads, and a weaker one for DAZN or Sky Italia.

Proton VPN: best for Netflix Italy
The guide reports 104 Italian servers in Milan and Palermo. Netflix Italy, RaiPlay and Mediaset Infinity worked in testing; DAZN Italy did not. Two limits stand out. It has no central-Italy location in that test, and Top10VPN notes it lacks a router app. If you want to cover a smart TV or console through a router, check this before buying.
Surfshark: best lower-cost option
Surfshark has servers in Milan and Rome. It passed the longest list of Italian services of any non-ExpressVPN provider: Netflix Italy, RaiPlay, Mediaset Infinity, Sky Italia, La7, SuperTennis and TIMvision. DAZN Italy was the miss. Prices on the Top10VPN page were dated promotional offers, so compare the current price, including the renewal rate, before you commit.

TunnelBear: a free option with real limits
Top10VPN reports a 2 GB data cap and no manual server selection. You cannot pick Italy, so you may not get an Italian IP address at all. A 2 GB cap is used up quickly by video, so it suits a quick check or light browsing, not films, series or live sport. Treat it as a way to try a VPN, not a streaming solution.
What Netflix says about VPNs
Netflix’s Help Center states that “If you connect to the internet using a VPN (virtual private network), it may look like your device or network is connecting from somewhere you’re not.” It adds that “You may need to turn off your VPN to watch all the TV shows and movies available in your area.” In practice, a VPN connection may show only titles Netflix holds worldwide rights to, and Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported plans. A VPN can change your apparent location, but it cannot promise the full regional catalog.

How to choose
- Name the service. If it is DAZN Italy, ExpressVPN is the only one of these five with a reported pass. For Sky Italia, ExpressVPN and Surfshark passed; NordVPN was inconsistent.
- Check the city footprint. The coverage differs: Cosenza, Milan and Naples (ExpressVPN); Milan, Rome and Palermo (NordVPN); Milan and Palermo (Proton VPN); Milan and Rome (Surfshark). If you need an Italian IP, a nearer or better-supported city can matter.
- Check devices. Tom’s Guide lists routers among supported device categories for some services, while Proton VPN has no router app per Top10VPN. If your TV has no native VPN app, a VPN-capable router is the usual workaround. Confirm that the router model supports your chosen provider’s protocol before buying.
- Match the plan to the use. Free tiers with data caps do not suit long-form or live viewing.
- Test within the refund window. Services change their blocking, so try your actual apps soon after you subscribe, while a money-back period still applies. Check the provider’s current terms.
A note on security
The sources behind this comparison concentrate on streaming access, server coverage and speed. They do not verify independent privacy audits across all five providers, so this article does not rank them on security. Before relying on any VPN for privacy, read the provider’s published no-logs policy and any third-party audit reports yourself. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its server, which is useful on public Wi-Fi, but it does not change what a streaming service’s terms allow.

Limits of these results
Server counts, locations, speeds, prices and streaming access all change often. Top10VPN’s findings are a snapshot from August 2026. A service that worked then may be blocked now, and one that failed may have been fixed. Use the table as a shortlist, not as proof.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
