The five VPNs worth comparing for expats in 2026 are NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access. They are candidates identified in travel-focused reviews—not universal winners, and none can guarantee access to a particular country’s services or streaming catalog. Choose based on your destination, devices, privacy requirements, and the difference between a temporary trip and a permanent move.
How to choose a VPN as an expat
Start with what you need the connection to do. A VPN routes internet traffic through a provider’s server, which can make websites see that server’s location rather than your own. That may help with some location-sensitive services, but it does not guarantee that a service will accept the connection or show a particular catalog.

- Check locations that matter to you. Look for an exit location in your home country if you need to connect through it, and useful coverage near your destination. Published server-country counts change and may vary by source; a large global network does not prove a particular account or service will work.
- Review privacy evidence. Read the provider’s privacy policy and look for independent audits. Pay attention to who conducted an audit, when it took place, and which systems it covered.
- Think about your actual networks. Hotel Wi-Fi, mobile hotspots, captive portals, public networks, and restrictive networks can behave differently. Security.org says its travel comparison evaluates varied network environments, security, leaks, streaming, and censorship circumvention; those are the publication’s criteria, not tests performed for this article. Security.org’s 2026 travel VPN comparison reports testing over 50 VPNs.
- Match the service to your devices and household. Check current support for your phones, computers, and other devices, plus simultaneous-connection limits, setup steps, and customer support.
- Check the current terms before paying. Prices, renewal rates, device limits, refund terms, and taxes can change. Confirm them directly with the provider rather than relying on an old comparison.
Five VPNs to compare for expat use
Security.org’s 2026 travel comparison includes all five services below; TechRadar also compares several of them for travel. Their distinctions reflect those publications’ assessments, not a universal ranking or hands-on testing for this article. Your destination and device needs may change which one is the best fit.
| VPN | Why to consider it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Security.org ranks it first in its 2026 travel comparison and highlights smartphone use. TechRadar reports testing streaming services through it. Security.org; TechRadar. | A successful streaming session in a review does not guarantee continuing access to a particular catalog. Check current locations, device support, and terms. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org highlights it for streaming while traveling. Proton publishes details of Securitum’s 2026 no-logs assessment. Security.org; Proton VPN’s audit announcement. | Proton says the fifth consecutive annual audit examined server-side logging questions. Treat it as evidence about the examined infrastructure and period, not a blanket guarantee about every future system. |
| ExpressVPN | Security.org includes it among its five travel picks and identifies quick-task use as a distinction. Security.org. | Check current device allowance, pricing, server coverage, and performance for your needs. |
| Surfshark | Security.org includes it among its five picks and highlights restrictive-country use. Security.org. | Do not assume it—or any VPN—will connect reliably in every restricted country. Check local laws and current technical availability for your destination. |
| Private Internet Access | Security.org and TechRadar include it in travel-oriented comparisons. TechRadar notes its customization and Linux angle. Security.org; TechRadar. | Its customization may suit technically confident users; check current coverage, platform support, and terms. |
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for local content
A VPN can change the apparent network location of a connection, but access is decided by the service you are trying to use. A platform may detect or restrict VPN traffic, and licensing or account rules may apply regardless of your VPN provider. Do not choose a VPN on the promise that it will restore a home-country catalog.

Streaming services may limit catalogs
Netflix says VPN users may see only titles it licenses worldwide and may need to turn off the VPN to see regional titles. It also says an account’s country changes when the subscriber moves to a new country. Netflix’s guidance on VPN use explains its approach. Check the service’s own rules for your situation.
Temporary travel in the EU differs from moving
EU portability rules generally let subscribers access their home-country paid online content while temporarily traveling in another EU country. The European Commission’s guidance is about portability during travel, not a blanket promise for a permanent relocation. If you live in France and work in Germany, check the provider’s conditions for your circumstances; if you move to another EU country for longer, the provider may apply different conditions. Do not extend this EU rule to a move outside the EU. European Commission guidance on online content portability.

Understand the privacy trade-off
A VPN is not an anonymity service. The Federal Trade Commission explains that VPN apps route traffic through provider-controlled servers, and some encrypt traffic between a device and the VPN server. Using one shifts trust away from the local network or internet provider and toward the VPN provider; websites may still identify you through information you share or other account activity.

Audit claims also need context. Proton says Securitum conducted its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit in 2026. In Proton’s announcement, it quotes the report as finding: “The technical evidence reviewed during the engagement did not indicate that the examined Proton VPN server infrastructure logs users’ browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata.” This describes the audit’s examined infrastructure and period; it is not a promise that every system or future configuration has been assessed.
