Which cloud backup service is best for you in the UK? IDrive is a strong all-round candidate in the available comparisons, while Backblaze, pCloud and Dropbox Backup are alternatives worth checking against your devices and recovery needs. OneDrive is especially convenient if you already use Microsoft 365, but its stated PC folder backup covers Desktop, Documents and Pictures—not a complete system image.
These recommendations draw on comparison coverage, including TechRadar’s 2026 roundup and Cloudwards’ UK guide, rather than hands-on testing for this article. Prices and provider terms can change; confirm current UK costs, supported devices, backup scope and restore conditions before subscribing.

What to check before choosing cloud backup
“Cloud backup” can mean different things. A backup service may protect files from a computer for later recovery; a sync folder keeps selected files aligned across devices; and cloud storage provides online space. Some products combine these functions, but a sync or storage feature should not be assumed to protect every file or make a recoverable copy of the whole computer. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup also distinguishes cloud backup from cloud storage.

- Recovery: Look for the restore workflow, file-version history, deleted-file retention and any physical recovery service or fee.
- Capacity and limits: Verify the included storage, file-size restrictions and the conditions attached to any “unlimited” claim.
- Privacy and security: Check the provider’s current documentation for encryption, account security, account recovery and any disclosed data-location details.
- UK cost: Compare the recurring monthly or annual price, renewal terms and cost for the number of people and devices you need. Treat introductory offers separately from the standard price.
- How it runs: Establish whether backup is continuous or scheduled, and whether the plan includes sync or collaboration as well as backup.
The available comparison sources identify credible candidates but do not establish a complete, current feature matrix for all five services. Confirm these details directly with each provider before paying.

Five cloud backup options to consider in the UK
IDrive: a broad all-round candidate
TechRadar named IDrive its top pick in its 2026 cloud-backup roundup, which it says reflects its own testing. Cloudwards also describes IDrive as an all-rounder in its UK-focused comparison. Those are useful starting points, not a guarantee that it is best for every reader. Check the current UK plan for the computers and other devices you need to cover, its capacity and retention rules, and how restores work.
Backblaze: compare its backup scope and limits
Backblaze appears in both the comparison material and Cloudwards’ UK guide, which describes it as offering unlimited cloud backup storage. Confirm the current plan’s definition of unlimited, eligible devices and drives, retention terms and restore options before relying on that description. The available evidence does not establish a comparable current UK price or a complete platform and recovery specification.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
pCloud: check whether its coverage matches your needs
pCloud is another option included in the comparison coverage. Before treating it as a computer-backup replacement, establish exactly which files and devices the relevant plan protects, how deleted or older files can be restored, and what storage limits apply. The available evidence does not establish current UK pricing or a full set of backup and recovery terms.

Dropbox Backup: distinguish backup from file sync
Dropbox Backup appears among the services covered by the comparison sources. Check which devices and folders its current plan backs up, how its recovery and version history work, and whether the scope covers what you mean by a backup. Do not infer full-computer protection from Dropbox’s file-sync or cloud-storage features alone; the available evidence does not provide a complete current feature specification or UK price.

Microsoft OneDrive: convenient for Microsoft 365 users
Microsoft says OneDrive can automatically back up and sync the Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders on a PC. That defined folder coverage can be useful, but it does not establish a complete disk image or full-system recovery. Microsoft’s UK pages list these prices and storage allowances:
| Plan | UK price shown | Storage and users |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Basic | £1.99 per month or £19.99 per year | 100 GB |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | £8.49 per month or £84.99 per year | 1 TB for one person |
| Microsoft 365 Family | £10.49 per month or £104.99 per year | 1 TB per person for up to six people; up to 6 TB total |
These are the prices displayed on Microsoft’s UK pages on 7 October 2026, not a guarantee of today’s price. Microsoft says subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled, so check the checkout page and renewal terms. The pages state that Microsoft 365 plans work on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android; that device compatibility does not mean every device receives the same backup coverage.

How to choose for your devices and recovery needs
- List what must be recoverable. Identify the computers, phones, external drives and important folders you need covered. If you need a complete computer recovery, verify explicitly that the plan supports it; OneDrive’s stated PC folder feature is limited to Desktop, Documents and Pictures.
- Estimate your data and device count. Compare your total data with each plan’s capacity and limits, and check whether the price covers the number of devices or people in your household.
- Test the recovery promise on paper. Read the provider’s current terms for version history, deleted-file retention, restore steps and any physical recovery option or fee. A backup is useful only if you can retrieve the files when needed.
- Compare the recurring UK cost. Check monthly and annual totals, automatic renewal, and whether a displayed discount is introductory rather than recurring. For Microsoft, use the figures above as a dated snapshot and confirm the current storefront price.
- Match the service to your usage. Choose based on whether you want ongoing computer backup, selected-folder sync, shared storage or a combination. Do not pay for a sync feature as though it were full-system backup.
Why keep a local backup as well?
A cloud subscription can be one layer of a broader backup plan, not the only copy. TechRadar describes the 3-2-1 approach as keeping three copies of data on at least two storage media, with one copy stored separately. An external hard drive can provide a local copy, while a cloud backup supplies an off-site copy. A local drive complements a cloud service; it does not replace it.
