5 Arcade Racing Games for PS2 and Dreamcast Nostalgia

These modern racers recall different parts of the PS2 and Dreamcast era, from 4PGP’s flowing circuits to New Star GP’s checkpoints and Dangerous Driving’s takedowns.

If what you miss about PS2- and Dreamcast-era racing is the immediate arcade feel, flowing turns, checkpoint pressure or spectacular crashes, different modern games answer different parts of that nostalgia. 4PGP is the strongest match here for vivid Dreamcast-like presentation and quick, flowing circuits; New Star GP pairs classic checkpoint races with a career; Dangerous Driving is the pick for takedowns and crash-focused action. These are modern games drawing on particular design traits, not a list of official sequels.

What “PS2 and Dreamcast era” means for racing games

It is a mood and a collection of design choices, not a precise genre. For one player, the appeal is a car that is fun to steer immediately; for another, it is a satisfying drift, a track that keeps its momentum through corners, a countdown of checkpoints, bright retro visuals, a long career, or the risk of smashing into rivals.

Those traits do not always come together in one game. Bandai Namco’s Ridge Racer V describes the series through high-speed excitement, drift-control tension and exhilaration, and intense battles with opponents. That is a useful reference point for the era’s arcade-racing appeal, but each modern recommendation below recalls a different part of it.

Best for flowing circuits and retro presentation: 4PGP

Choose 4PGP if your strongest memory is the sensation of carrying speed through a tight course rather than building a realistic driving setup. A review published June 11, 2026 describes its quick circuits and cornering rhythm as drawing on Daytona and Ridge Racer, and points to simple, boldly graded visuals reminiscent of a Dreamcast-era racer. That combination makes it the clearest fit in this group for players after both arcade immediacy and retro presentation. Read the review at Creative Bloq.

The cited review lists PS5, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, and PC. It is a review rather than a platform-store listing, so confirm the game’s current availability and exact format for your region before buying.

Best for checkpoint races and a career: New Star GP

New Star GP is the better fit if you want the quick objective of a classic checkpoint race but also want something to manage between events. In a 2024 developer interview, its team described the checkpoint races as callbacks to Ridge Racer, OutRun, and Daytona. The interview also highlights a retro soundtrack and an RPG-style career: you upgrade a car and manage a racing team across decades. Read the developer interview at Nintendo Life.

Best for a mix of classic influences and modern presentation: Xenon Racer

Xenon Racer suits players who want a contemporary game whose developers deliberately studied older arcade racers. In an Unreal Engine interview, the development team said it looked to Ridge Racer, Daytona, OutRun, and Wipeout while aiming to honor the old-school arcade approach with modern visuals and physics. Best for takedowns and risky arcade action: Dangerous Driving

If your nostalgia is less about tidy lap times and more about contact, danger, and forcing rivals out of a race, Dangerous Driving is the more natural choice. An interview with Alex Ward discusses bringing back the arcade feel associated with his work on Burnout; a separate Three Fields Entertainment interview describes modes centered on takedowns and survival, including Road Rage and pursuits. Consider Onrush for a broader arcade option

Onrush may interest players looking beyond close recreations of retro styling or race structure. PlayStation Blog’s 2017 announcement presented it as an all-out arcade racer from creators associated with MotorStorm and Driveclub. That supports calling it an arcade-oriented option, but the announcement does not specifically connect its design to the PS2 or Dreamcast era. Read the announcement at PlayStation Blog. Its current availability is not established there.

How to choose without treating “retro” as one feature

  • For track flow and bright, pared-back visuals: start with 4PGP.
  • For checkpoint targets plus long-term team and car progression: choose New Star GP.
  • For a developer-documented blend of classic arcade influences and modern visuals and physics: consider Xenon Racer.
  • For takedowns, survival, and collision-focused events: look at Dangerous Driving.
  • For a wider arcade-racing direction rather than a specific retro callback: consider Onrush.

Platform support and regional availability are not fully established across these sources. Confirm both on the store for your system before purchasing, especially for games whose cited material is an interview or an older announcement rather than a current store listing.
