Android has no single switch that makes a phone feel personal. What changes the day-to-day feel is a small set of settings that control how the screen looks, when apps interrupt you, what shows on the lock screen, and which apps can reach your data. This article walks through five areas Google documents, with the path to each, the trade-off, and what to check when your phone’s menus look different. Treat it as a menu to choose from. Pick the settings that fix a problem you actually have.
Before you start
- Check your Android version. Some color-scheme options require Android 13 or later, according to Google’s Android Help pages.
- Expect different labels. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and by manufacturer. If you cannot find a label described below, search for its keyword in Settings.
- Know that work and school accounts can limit some features. Google notes that app timers may not be supported on some work or school accounts.
1. Dark theme and color scheme
The documented path is Settings > Display > Dark theme. Google’s Android Help describes the feature this way: “You can change the color scheme of some screens and apps on your Android device and phone.” Note the word “some.” Not every screen or app follows the system setting.

Battery Saver can switch Dark theme on automatically on some phones. If your screen turns dark without you choosing it, check Battery Saver before you assume something is broken.

Dark theme is often chosen to save power, but the benefit depends on hardware. Android Developers documentation says dark theme can reduce power use “depending on the device’s screen technology.” No single percentage applies across phones, so judge it by how your own battery behaves.

2. Bedtime mode display options
Digital Wellbeing’s Bedtime mode can offer several display choices while it is active. These may include grayscale, dimming the wallpaper, keeping the screen dark, and dark theme. Which options appear depends on your device and Android version, so expect a shorter list on some phones. Open Digital Wellbeing from Settings to see what your phone offers.
The trade-off is mostly about evenings. Grayscale can make the phone less appealing to scroll through late at night, but it also makes some colored content, such as maps or photos, harder to read.

3. Focus mode and app timers
Focus mode
Focus mode pauses the apps you select and suppresses their notifications while it is active. Google’s Digital Wellbeing help also documents scheduling Focus mode and taking a temporary break from it.

App timers
App timers let you set a daily time limit for a specific app. They are useful when one app consistently takes more of your day than you intended. Timers are a reminder you set for yourself, not a lock imposed by another party, so their effect depends on whether you respect them.
4. Notifications and the lock screen
Start with Digital Wellbeing, which shows notification counts by app. That view tells you which apps generate the most interruptions, so you can adjust those first rather than changing every app.
Rank #4
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping

Lock-screen notification controls sit in the Security and privacy area. Google documents this entry for Android 13 and later, but the exact options differ by device. You will usually be choosing between two approaches:
- Hide sensitive content on the lock screen. Less of your messages and alerts is visible to someone who picks up your phone. The cost is that you must unlock the phone to see what a notification says.
- Show content on the lock screen. Alerts are quicker to scan at a glance, but anyone holding the phone can read them.
5. App permissions
Android’s official privacy material describes three permission choices for many sensitive features: allow access only while you are using the app, allow it once, or deny it. Android can also reset permissions for apps you have not used in a while, so an app may ask again later.

Review permissions one app at a time, and ask what the app needs the permission for. Denying everything is not the goal. A navigation app needs location while you are navigating; a camera app needs the camera while you are taking photos. Use the table below to decide.
| Choice | What it means | When it tends to fit |
|---|---|---|
| Allow only while using the app | The app can access the permission while it is open | Maps, camera, recording or other tools you use in the foreground |
| Allow once | Access is granted for one session | An app you rarely open that needs a permission occasionally |
| Deny | The app cannot use that permission | Features you do not use, such as a shopping app asking for contacts |
Newer visual options in Android 16
Google’s Android 16 announcement, published December 2, 2025, describes custom icon shapes and an expanded dark theme. These depend on the Android version and device you have. If your phone is not running Android 16 or its manufacturer has not shipped the feature, the options will not appear. Check Settings rather than assuming they are there.
Choosing which settings to change
Start from the problem, not the list.
- Screen too bright at night: Dark theme and Bedtime mode display options.
- Too many interruptions: Notification counts first, then Focus mode.
- Doomscrolling in one app: App timers for that app.
- Private messages visible on a locked screen: Hide sensitive content on the lock screen.
- Apps asking for more than they need: Permission choices, app by app.
Change one or two settings, use the phone normally for a few days, and then decide whether to keep them. Each of these can be changed again later.

The Bottom Line
A phone feels like yours when its settings match how you actually use it, not when every toggle has been flipped. Begin with the one or two areas that address a real annoyance, and leave the rest at their defaults until you notice a need for them.
