Some AirPods features need to be switched on, while others are available only on certain models. Before changing settings, connect your AirPods and check their model under Settings > Bluetooth > More Info beside the pair. The five options below cover sound adjustment, conversations, notifications, and accessibility; use only the instructions that match your hardware.
Check which AirPods support each feature
Apple’s current support guides list different compatibility for different features. In particular, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness are not listed for every model that supports Personalized Volume.

How do I turn on Adaptive Audio on AirPods?
Adaptive Audio combines Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency, adjusting how much outside sound you hear as conditions change. Apple lists it for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2.

- Wear and connect your compatible AirPods to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the volume control, then choose Listening Mode.
- Select Adaptive.
You can adjust the balance between noise control and ambient sound in the connected AirPods’ settings: choose Adaptive, then move the slider to allow more or less environmental noise. If Adaptive does not appear, check that your model is supported and connected. How do I turn on Conversation Awareness?
When you start speaking, Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and enhances voices in front of you. Spoken audio may pause after a few seconds; when the conversation ends, playback returns to its previous volume. Apple lists the feature for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2.

- Connect and wear compatible AirPods.
- In Control Center, touch and hold the volume control.
- Select Conversation Awareness.

How do I turn on Personalized Volume?
Personalized Volume adapts media volume to the environment and volume preferences it learns over time. Apple lists it for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2.

- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the More Info button beside your connected AirPods.
- Turn on Personalized Volume. Depending on the software version, the control may be under Audio & Routing.
On a Mac, open System Settings and select your connected AirPods. Apple describes the feature in its Adaptive Audio guide; the model list also appears in its listening mode settings guide.
How do I make AirPods read my notifications?
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and turn on Announce Notifications. From that screen, choose which apps Siri can announce and how frequently announcements occur.

Apple says time-sensitive notifications may be announced automatically when AirPods are worn and paired with an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. Head gestures on AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 require both Announce Calls and Announce Notifications to be on. How do I use Live Listen with AirPods?
Live Listen turns an iPhone or iPad into a microphone and sends the sound it picks up to AirPods. Apple describes it as useful for hearing a lecture or conversation from farther away. It is an accessibility feature, not a substitute for hearing care; use it respectfully and with the knowledge of people nearby.
