5 3D Printer Features Worth Upgrading For—and When to Replace the Printer

A missing feature is not an automatic reason to replace a 3D printer. Match upgrades to your materials and workflow, verify model and firmware compatibility, and compare the full effort and cost with replacement.

Missing one of these five features is not, by itself, a reason to replace your 3D printer. Upgrade when a capability is holding back the materials or workflow you actually use, and when a compatible retrofit is practical; consider replacement when several important limitations would take costly or difficult fixes to solve.

How to decide whether a missing feature matters

Start with the problem you want to fix, not a checklist of features on newer machines. A printer that handles your usual materials and produces the results you need may not benefit from an upgrade. Conversely, a missing feature can be a real obstacle if it causes repeated setup work, interrupts long prints, or prevents you from printing a material you intend to use.

For each capability below, check the exact printer model, its firmware, and any manufacturer safety guidance. Retrofit compatibility is model-specific: a sensor, extruder, plate, or enclosure that fits one printer may not fit another. Snapmaker’s guide to 3D printer upgrades treats upgrades as options to evaluate for a particular machine, not universal add-ons.

1. Automatic bed leveling

Manual bed setup can take time and may need attention when the build surface or machine changes. An automatic leveling sensor or mesh-calibration system can reduce that setup work by measuring the bed and compensating for variation during printing. For example, Creality lists automatic leveling on the Ender-3 V3 Plus.

If your printer lacks it, first check whether the manufacturer supports a sensor for your exact model and firmware. Confirm that the sensor can be mounted in the right position, connected to the control board, and configured in firmware. A sensor that physically fits but is not supported by the firmware is not a complete upgrade.

When it is worth considering

  • Manual bed setup is a recurring problem in your workflow.
  • You have confirmed a compatible sensor and a supported firmware path for your printer.
  • The total installation effort is preferable to replacing the machine for the same need.

2. Direct-drive extrusion

In a direct-drive arrangement, the extruder sits at or near the hotend and feeds filament over a short path. In a Bowden setup, the extruder pushes filament through a longer tube to the hotend. Direct drive is common on current manufacturer-listed printers, including the Ender-3 V3 Plus and Bambu Lab’s P1 series.

That feature alone does not establish that a printer will produce better prints or print faster. Consider a direct-drive conversion when it addresses a specific extrusion or material need in your workflow, and verify that the kit is designed for your printer. Check mounting, wiring, hotend and firmware support, and whether the conversion affects usable build space or other components.

When it is worth considering

  • Your current extrusion setup is limiting a material or workflow you actually plan to use.
  • A model-specific kit and firmware instructions are available.
  • The conversion’s installation demands and total cost make sense compared with replacing the printer.

3. Filament runout detection

A runout sensor detects when filament has run out. Depending on the printer’s implementation, the machine may pause or alert you so you can reload filament. Creality lists a runout sensor on the Ender-3 V3 Plus, and Bambu Lab lists filament runout sensing for its P1 series.

Sensing is not a guarantee that every interrupted print will be saved. The response depends on the printer’s hardware and firmware, and a pause cannot prevent unrelated failures. Before adding a sensor, check whether your printer can act on its signal and how the manufacturer says to resume a print.

When it is worth considering

  • You often run prints long enough that a spool can run out before you can check it.
  • The sensor is compatible and the printer’s pause or alert behavior is documented.
  • You are treating it as help with one type of interruption, not as protection against every failed print.

4. Power-loss recovery

Power-loss recovery is intended to help a printer resume a job after an outage. Manufacturer product listings include the feature on the Ender-3 V3 Plus and Bambu Lab P1 series. Whether a print can resume successfully depends on the machine’s hardware and firmware as well as the conditions of the print.

If outages are a meaningful risk in your workspace, look up the recovery behavior for your exact printer and firmware. Do not assume a menu setting or a general feature label guarantees a clean restart in every situation. If considering a retrofit, confirm that the manufacturer supports it and that the required hardware and firmware changes are available for your model.

5. An enclosure for materials that need one

An enclosure is not a universal requirement for 3D printing. Its value depends on the material and the printer’s design. Snapmaker’s upgrade guide connects enclosures with printing more advanced materials, while manufacturer listings distinguish printers that are enclosed from those that use optional enclosures.

Monitor progress, adjust settings, and receive instant status alerts via Flash Studio. Integrated with filament detection, power loss recovery, and a 4.3-inch touchscreen for effortless operation.

Before buying or building one, identify the material you want to print and check the printer manufacturer’s temperature and safety guidance. Verify that the enclosure fits the machine, leaves room for the build volume and moving parts, and stays within safe operating limits. An enclosure that does not match the printer or its intended materials may add cost without solving your problem.

When it is worth considering

  • You have a specific target material whose requirements make an enclosure useful.
  • The enclosure is compatible with your printer’s dimensions and operation.
  • The printer manufacturer’s guidance supports the intended temperature and setup.

Upgrade the printer or replace it?

Compare the complete path to the outcome you want. A retrofit may involve more than the headline part: for example, a sensor can require firmware support, while an enclosure needs to fit the printer and its operating limits. Replacement may make more sense if several important needs require separate, difficult modifications—but there is no universal price at which replacement becomes the better choice.

What to compare For a retrofit For replacement
Compatibility Confirm the exact printer model, required parts, firmware support, and manufacturer instructions. Check that the new printer includes the capabilities you need and supports your intended materials.
Fit and operating limits Check sensor or extruder mounting, build-surface dimensions, enclosure fit, and safe operating limits as relevant. Check the new machine’s build dimensions and whether its enclosure and temperature guidance suit your materials.
Installation and support Account for installation effort and the availability of model-specific documentation. Account for setup and the support documentation available for the new machine.
Total cost Add the compatible parts and any other required components; no universal retrofit cost or break-even threshold is established. Compare the full replacement cost with the cost and effort of the compatible upgrades you would otherwise need.

Do not assume that a newer or faster printer automatically produces better prints. Make the choice around the limitations you can name, the materials you plan to use, and a verified path to address those needs.

Other physical upgrades still need a fit check

A PEI flexible build plate can be another possible change, but its dimensions and mounting must match the printer. The same principle applies to leveling sensors, direct-drive extruder kits, and enclosures: choose by the problem being solved, then verify model compatibility rather than relying on a product category name alone.
