Yes, a 4 TB drive can be initialized as MBR, but on conventional 512-byte logical-sector disks, Windows cannot address its full capacity that way. MBR’s 32-bit sector addressing reaches about 2.2 TB; use GPT if you want Windows to manage the full 4 TB. For a Windows boot drive, also confirm that the computer supports UEFI and that Windows will boot in UEFI mode.
Why does an MBR drive show only about 2 TB?
MBR stores partition boundaries using 32-bit sector addresses. With 512-byte logical sectors, that address range corresponds to 2,199,023,255,552 bytes: about 2.199 decimal TB, or about 2 TiB. Microsoft’s support guidance describes this as approximately 2.2 TB and says capacity beyond 2 TB cannot be addressed by Windows when a disk uses MBR. Microsoft explains the MBR capacity limit.

This is an addressing limit, not a fault in the drive. Windows may leave the capacity beyond the addressable range unavailable when the disk uses MBR. Decimal terabytes (TB) and binary tebibytes (TiB) are different units, which is one reason the displayed figures may not match the drive’s advertised capacity exactly.
Should a 4 TB data drive use MBR or GPT?
| Partition scheme | When it fits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| MBR | Legacy BIOS workflows and disks no larger than about 2 TB with conventional 512-byte logical sectors | It can be applied to a 4 TB disk, but Windows cannot address all of that disk’s capacity through the usual MBR path. |
| GPT | Data disks larger than 2 TB; Windows system disks booted in UEFI mode | Windows recommends GPT for disks larger than 2 TB. Confirm operating-system and, for a system disk, firmware support before changing schemes. |
For a 4 TB disk used for files, GPT is the straightforward choice if you want Windows to manage the full capacity. Microsoft’s partition-scheme guidance recommends GPT for disks larger than 2 TB.

What changes if the 4 TB drive is a Windows boot disk?
A data disk and a system disk have different requirements. Windows installation on a UEFI-based device uses GPT for the disk containing Windows, and a GPT system disk must boot through UEFI. A computer configured for legacy BIOS boot may not boot Windows from a GPT system disk. Check that the device supports UEFI and that its firmware can be configured for UEFI before converting a boot drive. See Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT deployment guidance.
How many partitions do MBR and GPT support?
Capacity is not the only difference. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes MBR as supporting up to four standard primary partitions. Its Windows 11 GPT deployment guidance allows up to 128 partitions. MBR’s treatment of extended partitions and logical drives is separate from the primary-partition count; the four-partition figure does not mean MBR can hold only four volumes.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Microsoft’s GPT deployment guidance also gives a maximum partition size of 18 exabytes per partition. These figures describe Windows guidance and layouts; for an ordinary 4 TB disk, the practical reason to choose GPT is that it can address capacity beyond MBR’s limit. How to change a disk from MBR to GPT in Windows
Back up important files first and verify the disk you select. Microsoft’s simple Disk Management conversion procedure requires the disk to have no partitions or volumes, so using that path involves deleting existing partitions or volumes before converting.

- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Open Disk Management and identify the correct disk by its capacity and contents.
- Back up any files you need to keep, then delete the disk’s partitions or volumes. This removes data stored there.
- In Disk Management, right-click the disk label and choose the option to convert to GPT.
- Create new volumes and restore your files from backup as needed.
Microsoft documents the Disk Management and command-line partition-scheme procedures in its conversion guidance. Do not treat this basic conversion path as a way to preserve existing volumes.
Converting a Windows system disk
MBR2GPT is a separate Windows tool for eligible system-disk conversions. It validates the disk layout and has prerequisites; it is not the same as converting an empty data disk in Disk Management. The computer must support UEFI, and after conversion the firmware must be set to boot in UEFI mode. Review Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation and back up important files before making changes.

Does a 4Kn drive change the answer?
A 4Kn disk uses 4,096-byte logical sectors, so the theoretical address ceiling differs from the one calculated for 512-byte logical sectors. That exception does not change the usual Windows recommendation for a general-purpose 4 TB disk: use GPT to address the full capacity. Microsoft discusses sector size and large-disk addressing in its large-disk support guidance.
