Common UHD 4K is 3840×2160 pixels, while common UHD 8K is 7680×4320—four times as many pixels per frame. Whether a setup can display either resolution, and at what refresh rate and color depth, depends on the source, display, ports and cable working together.
What is the difference between 4K and 8K HDMI?
There is no separate image resolution called “4K HDMI” or “8K HDMI.” 4K and 8K refer to the number of pixels in an image; HDMI is the connection standard that transports the signal between devices. A cable cannot make a 4K source output 8K or give an 8K television an 8K-capable input.

For common UHD formats, 4K is 3840×2160 and 8K is 7680×4320. The 8K image doubles the pixel count in both dimensions, so it contains four times as many pixels per frame. Product labels can cover different formats, so check the actual resolution and supported modes in each device’s specifications. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s 4K/8K comparison lists these common formats.

What determines whether a 4K or 8K signal works?
Compatibility is determined by the complete signal path and the exact mode you want—not by resolution alone. Refresh rate, chroma format, bit depth and HDR can change the bandwidth required. Both the source and display must support the requested mode, and the cable must carry it reliably.

- Source: Can the console, computer, player or receiver output the target resolution and refresh rate?
- Display and ports: Does the display accept that mode through the specific HDMI input being used?
- Signal format: What refresh rate, color/chroma format, bit depth and HDR are required?
- Cable: Is its official category suitable for the mode, and is the cable length appropriate for a reliable connection?
For example, “4K” alone does not tell you whether a setup can handle 4K at 60Hz or 120Hz. Likewise, 8K without a refresh rate and color format is not a complete description of the signal.
How do HDMI bandwidth and cable categories compare?
Bandwidth is one reason cable category matters. The figures below are category and specification limits described by HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) and HDMI Forum sources—not a promise that a particular combination of devices supports every mode.

| HDMI cable category | Bandwidth described by HDMI LA | What it means for choosing |
|---|---|---|
| High Speed | Up to 10.2Gbps | Check the exact requested format; the category alone does not establish support for higher-bandwidth modes. |
| Premium High Speed | Up to 18Gbps | Specified for 4K60-related use cases. Confirm that the exact format your devices need fits. |
| Ultra High Speed | Up to 48Gbps | The relevant certified category for modes within 48Gbps, including 4K120 or 8K60 where the source and display support the mode. |
| Ultra96 | Up to 96Gbps | The cable category for applications using HDMI 2.2 bandwidth above 48Gbps. |
HDMI 2.1b describes bandwidth up to 48Gbps and modes including 8K60 and 4K120; HDMI LA says the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable supports that bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1b features. HDMI 2.2 describes bandwidth up to 96Gbps and examples including 8K60 full chroma and 4K240 full chroma at 10- or 12-bit color. These are capabilities described by the standards, not guarantees that every port or device can use them. See the HDMI 2.1b overview and HDMI 2.2 overview.

Only if the cable you already have cannot reliably carry the mode you want. For a mode within 48Gbps, such as 8K60 or 4K120, look for a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. A label that merely says “8K” or “4K” is not the same as proof of certification. For an application above 48Gbps, HDMI LA identifies Ultra96 as the relevant cable category.

- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
HDMI LA’s cable-type guide lists High Speed, Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed categories and their bandwidth descriptions. Don’t replace a working cable just because a display is marketed as 4K or 8K; first establish the exact mode and whether the existing cable carries it reliably.
How can I verify an HDMI cable’s certification?
Look for the official category and certification label, not just a seller’s performance claim. HDMI LA says certified Ultra High Speed cables are tested at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center. Its cable certification guidance describes scanning the label with the certification app to verify the cable’s status.

Does “HDMI 2.1 cable” prove it supports 8K?
No. HDMI LA cautions that HDMI version numbers alone do not define a product’s capabilities and are not allowed as cable labeling, packaging or promotional claims. Check for the official cable category—such as Ultra High Speed—and its certification label, then verify that your source and display support the format you intend to use. See HDMI LA’s cable guidance.

A higher-bandwidth cable can be used in a lower-bandwidth setup, but it will not upgrade the TV or source. The picture will be limited to the highest mode supported across the devices and connection. If your 4K setup already carries its intended mode reliably, an 8K label by itself is not a reason to replace the cable.

Does 8K always look better than 4K?
8K contains four times as many pixels per frame as common UHD 4K, but pixel count alone does not establish a visible improvement for every viewer. Screen size, viewing distance, content and the quality of the source image all matter. The cited HDMI specifications do not establish a universal screen-size or viewing-distance threshold at which 8K becomes noticeable, so a precise cutoff would be misleading.
Quick Recap
Choose a cable for the mode, not the marketing label
- Check the source and display manuals for the resolution and refresh rate supported by the specific ports you plan to use.
- Identify the complete target signal, including chroma format, bit depth and HDR where relevant.
- Compare that mode with the HDMI capabilities of both devices; neither a cable label nor a newer cable category adds unsupported device features.
- Choose a cable category suited to the required bandwidth: Premium High Speed up to 18Gbps, Ultra High Speed up to 48Gbps, or Ultra96 up to 96Gbps.
- For Ultra High Speed certification, check the official label and verify it with HDMI LA’s certification app. If the connection does not work reliably, recheck device settings, ports, mode support and cable certification.
