Choose 1440p (QHD) if you want a strong gaming frame rate without demanding as much from your graphics card, especially on a 27-inch monitor. Choose 4K if finer detail, more native screen space, or 4K content matters more—and your computer can deliver the performance you want at that resolution. Neither is automatically better: screen size, refresh rate, panel, ports, and adaptive sync all matter.
What is the difference between 4K and 1440p?
On a standard 16:9 monitor, 1440p or QHD is 2560 × 1440 pixels; 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160. That works out to about 3.69 million pixels for QHD and 8.29 million for 4K—roughly 2.25 times as many pixels in a 4K image. Dell’s monitor listings use these resolution labels, and Dell’s 4K UHD monitor category identifies 3840 × 2160 displays.

More pixels can show finer detail, but the visible difference depends on screen size, viewing distance, and your eyes. A 4K display is not guaranteed to look dramatically sharper to every person in every setup. ASUS likewise recommends matching resolution to monitor size and use, rather than treating pixel count alone as the decision: ASUS’s monitor resolution guide.

Which resolution is better for gaming?
For gaming, the practical tradeoff is detail versus rendering load. At the same settings, a GPU has to render more pixels for each 4K frame than for a 1440p frame. That makes 4K at a high refresh rate more demanding; Dell recommends a strong GPU for that goal and positions QHD as a useful choice for players prioritizing frame rate. These are broad buying-guide recommendations, not guarantees for a particular PC or game. See Dell’s 2026 gaming monitor buying guide.

There is no universal frames-per-second penalty that applies to every setup. The result varies with the game, GPU, CPU limits, graphics settings, upscaling, and target refresh rate. If you are choosing for a specific system, look for performance results for that exact game and hardware combination rather than relying on resolution alone. RTINGS also frames the choice around the user’s priorities rather than a fixed winner: 1440p vs. 4K: What Resolution Should You Choose?
- Favor 1440p when higher frame rates matter more than maximum pixel detail, or when your GPU budget makes high-refresh 4K impractical.
- Favor 4K when image detail and cinematic presentation matter more and your PC can sustain your desired settings and refresh rate. Dell calls 4K its premium choice for cinematic single-player games, HDR content, or console play; that is Dell’s general buying advice, not a performance guarantee.
What monitor size works well with each resolution?
As starting points, consider 27-inch QHD for gaming and everyday use, and 32-inch 4K for detailed gaming, editing, or graphics work. Dell and ASUS both discuss matching resolution with display size, but neither pairing is a rule: viewing distance, desk setup, scaling preferences, and personal taste affect what works for you. A 27-inch 4K monitor is another option; its high pixel density may suit some users and workloads better than others. ASUS’s guide and Dell’s buying guide offer size-and-use guidance.

Is 4K worth it for work and everyday use?
4K provides more native pixels for fine detail and potential workspace, which can be useful for editing, graphics, and other detail-heavy tasks. Whether that helps in practice depends on the applications you use, monitor size, viewing distance, and how you prefer to scale text and interface elements. QHD may be sufficient at your chosen size and is less demanding to render in games. There is no fixed productivity advantage that applies to every application or user.
NVIDIA publishes an image-quality comparison stating that a 31.5-inch 3840 × 2160 monitor has 84% higher quality than a 27-inch 1920 × 1080 HD monitor at a PPD of 35.6. That comparison changes both resolution and screen size; it is not a direct 4K-versus-1440p test, so it should not be used to quantify the difference between those two resolutions. Details are on NVIDIA’s 4K technology page.

What should you compare besides resolution?
Two monitors with the same resolution can differ in ways that matter more to your use. Before choosing, compare the complete specifications rather than buying on pixel count alone.
- Refresh rate: Match it to the frame rate your system can actually produce in your games or applications.
- Panel technology: Consider image characteristics relevant to your content and work.
- Ports and bandwidth: Confirm the monitor and your computer support the chosen resolution at the refresh rate you want.
- Adaptive sync: Check support if variable frame rates matter to your gaming experience.
- Size and viewing distance: Choose a combination that makes the extra detail useful and comfortable to view.
Dell includes refresh rate, resolution, panel technology, connectivity, and adaptive sync among the factors to consider when selecting a monitor. Its gaming monitor buying guide provides an overview.
