4K Ultra HD Explained: Resolution, HDR, and What the Label Means

4K Ultra HD is a consumer-TV resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, also called 2160p. The label describes pixel dimensions, not HDR or overall picture quality.

For a consumer TV, 4K Ultra HD means a picture that is 3,840 pixels wide by 2,160 pixels high, also called 2160p. It describes resolution—not a guarantee of HDR, brightness, color performance, or the quality of the content you watch.

What does 4K Ultra HD mean?

In the television context, 4K UHD is a video format with 3,840 horizontal pixels and 2,160 vertical pixels. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defines it as 2160p, meaning the image is displayed progressively rather than as interlaced fields. ITU-T Recommendation F.780.1 (Version 3, 2023) gives this definition; the ITU-R BT.2020 recommendation describes the broader UHDTV system context.

Is 4K the same as Ultra HD?

In consumer-TV usage, “4K UHD” and “UHDTV 4K” refer to 3,840 × 2,160 pixels. The label “4K” is commonly used for this television format, even though the exact dimensions are 3,840 pixels across rather than a literal 4,000.

“Ultra HD” can also refer to a wider system concept, not just a pixel count. ITU materials discuss UHDTV as including image-system parameters beyond spatial resolution. In cinema contexts, “4K” may be used differently; the television definition above should not be assumed to specify a cinema format.

How does 4K UHD compare with 1080p and 8K?

Format Resolution Total pixels per frame
1080p HDTV 1,920 × 1,080 2,073,600
4K UHDTV 3,840 × 2,160 8,294,400
8K UHDTV 7,680 × 4,320 33,177,600

The 4K and 8K dimensions are identified in the ITU’s 2016 summary of its television recommendation and in its 2023 definitions. At the same aspect ratio, 4K has four times as many pixels as 1080p. 8K doubles 4K’s width and height, giving it four times as many pixels as 4K overall.

More pixels do not automatically mean a visibly better picture in every setup. How much extra detail a viewer can see depends in part on screen size and viewing distance. The ITU’s 2025 BT.2246-9 report gives 100 cm as an example viewing distance for a 100-inch UHDTV image under a criterion of one pixel per one arc-minute. That is a technical example tied to a specific viewing criterion, not a universal seating recommendation.

Does 4K mean HDR?

No. 4K describes spatial resolution; high dynamic range (HDR) is a separate imaging capability. ITU’s BT.2100 material addresses HDR approaches such as PQ and HLG and allows more than one resolution, including 4K and 8K. A 4K label alone therefore does not establish HDR support, a particular color gamut, or a particular brightness level.

What determines whether you actually see a 4K picture?

A 4K television’s panel is only one part of the viewing path. To see 4K detail, the content must be available in 4K and delivered through a compatible source and connection to the display. A 4K-capable screen does not, by itself, make every broadcast, stream, or video a native 4K image; lower-resolution material may instead be scaled to fit the screen.
