For 4K (2160p) at 60 fps on YouTube Live, set OBS to 50 Mbps video bitrate with H.264, or 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. A measured, sustained 100 Mbps upload connection is sufficient on paper: YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom, leaving about 80 Mbps for the stream and its network traffic. That is not a guarantee of stability, especially on a shared or inconsistent connection.
Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live
YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends the following settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not measurements from a particular OBS version, encoder, or internet connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Is 100 Mbps upload enough for 4K 60fps?
It should be enough if 100 Mbps is your measured, sustained upload speed available to the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Applied to a measured 100 Mbps upload, that means treating roughly 80 Mbps as the usable budget—not as a separate YouTube cap. Both recommended video targets fit within it, with some room for audio and network variation.

A connection advertised as “100 Mbps” may refer to download speed, not upload. Even when upload is advertised, real outbound speed can be lower, and other devices or users can consume bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips advise checking upload performance and accounting for network sharing. Leave more than the basic headroom if your connection fluctuates or is busy.

Set up OBS and YouTube Live
OBS labels can vary by version and by the encoder hardware or software installed. Use the settings below as the target values, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for an event.
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream key into OBS using the platform’s stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube ingest option, and enter the stream key if OBS requests it. Use RTMPS when the available connection option supports it.
- Set the video mode. Open Settings > Video and set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the frame rate to 60. Confirm that your computer and chosen encoder can produce this mode reliably.
- Set the encoder output. Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output, and choose an available YouTube-supported codec. Set rate control to CBR, the video bitrate to 50,000 Kbps for H.264 or 35,000 Kbps for AV1/H.265, and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If OBS shows a keyframe field in seconds, enter 2; if it uses frames, use the equivalent interval for 60 fps.
- Configure audio. Use AAC or MP3 and set stereo audio to 128 kbps where those options are available. Remember that audio adds traffic on top of the video bitrate.
- Run a private or unlisted test first. Start the OBS stream and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate, listen for audio issues, and watch for warnings before scheduling a public broadcast.
YouTube can detect an encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically by default. For a custom stream key, YouTube’s documentation describes manually selecting stream resolution in Live Control Room. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple viewer output formats. A 4K stream does not necessarily mean every viewer receives 4K; playback options depend on YouTube’s processing and the viewer’s device and connection.
Test for the actual conditions of your broadcast
A brief idle test may not reveal problems that occur during real content or on a busy network. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitoring stream health and messages while live, and accounting for other users sharing the connection. Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and network arrangement you will use for the broadcast. A network disruption can interrupt the stream even when the bitrate target fits within the nominal speed.

- Test the encoder with the intended 4K, 60 fps scene and codec.
- Check upload performance at the time and location of the planned broadcast.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages, OBS dropped frames, and audio during the test.
- If upload varies or the connection is shared, reduce competing traffic or choose a lower bitrate or output mode that remains stable.
4K latency trade-off
YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams: 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency. If near-real-time interaction with chat or viewers matters more than 4K detail, weigh the resolution choice against that latency constraint before going live.
Troubleshooting common 4K streaming problems
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate
Likely cause: Actual upload speed is below the target, varies over time, or is being shared by other network users. The 100 Mbps figure may also be a download-speed figure rather than upload.
Fix: Measure upload on the broadcast connection, reduce competing network use, and test again. If the connection cannot sustain the target with headroom, lower the bitrate or stream resolution rather than assuming the advertised speed will hold.

The stream appears below 4K or 60 fps
Likely cause: OBS output settings, the selected encoder, or YouTube’s detected stream mode does not match the intended output.
Fix: Verify OBS is sending 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, then check the stream preview and status in Live Control Room. For a custom stream key, consult YouTube’s resolution-selection guidance in Live Control Room.
Video looks poor despite reaching the bitrate target
Likely cause: A recommended bitrate is a target, not a guarantee that every encoder, scene, or source will look identical. The codec and encoder implementation also matter.

Fix: Confirm the selected codec and bitrate, then test with representative moving content. Do not treat YouTube’s lower listed minimum bitrate as equivalent to its recommendation.
Chat interaction feels delayed
Likely cause: YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p streams.
Fix: If lower interaction delay is essential, reconsider whether 4K resolution is necessary for this broadcast.

The stream disconnects
Likely cause: A network disruption or an encoder or connection failure. A bitrate that fits the speed test result cannot prevent every interruption.
Fix: Check OBS and YouTube stream-health messages, confirm the stream key and connection settings, and test the network under realistic conditions. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating a live stream with an encoder.
