Switching away from 4G does not reliably save battery on every phone. Whether it helps depends on what the phone is doing, how strong and stable its signal is, and how the handset and carrier configure the cellular radio. The published evidence does not support a universal rule such as “4G off means longer battery life,” and no reliable, current, cross-device percentage for savings from turning off 4G is established in the sources available.
For most people, the practical advice is to leave automatic network selection on unless a controlled test on their own phone, in their usual places, shows a consistent improvement.

Why “4G off” is not a universal battery setting
Network generation is only one input into how much energy a phone’s radio uses. The bigger drivers are the workload (a voice call, a text, a background sync, a large download), the radio state the phone is in when that workload happens, and how often the phone has to search for or switch between towers.
Android Developers puts the problem in plain terms in its guidance on network access: “Searching for a cell signal is one of the most power-draining operations on a mobile device.” Source: Android Developers, Optimize network access. If a phone spends a lot of time searching because of weak coverage, the setting you choose matters less than the signal you are getting.

What the older measurements actually showed
The most direct comparison of network generations that the sources cover is a 2009 study by Perrucci, Fitzek, Sasso, Kellerer, and Widmer. It measured 2G and 3G phones and found that the answer depended on the service being used:
- Voice and text messaging: tested 3G use consumed more energy than 2G.
- Large downloads: 3G was more energy-friendly than 2G.
The authors also included the energy cost of handovers between cells in their measurements. Their conclusion, as published, reads: “The results imply that mobile phones should switch the network in dependency of the service used to save the maximum amount of energy.” That is a finding about 2G and 3G handsets from 2009, showing that workload changes the outcome. It is not a prediction for a modern LTE phone, and the accessible abstract does not give numeric energy differences that could be applied to current devices.
Signal quality can outweigh any settings change
Apple’s developer guide on network energy, archived and last updated on 2016-09-13, notes that a poor or fluctuating signal can make network transactions slower and more prone to retries, and each retry costs energy. Telenor’s coverage guidance makes a complementary point: where coverage is better, the handset needs less power to stay connected.

This means a phone in a basement with one bar may drain faster on 4G, on 3G, or on any other setting, because the radio is working harder to hold a link. Moving to a spot with stronger service, or to Wi-Fi, can change the result more than toggling the network mode. The same Apple guide also states that Wi-Fi can use less energy than cellular networking in general.
Radio activity continues after the data is sent
Energy use does not stop when a transfer ends. Android’s documentation describes radio power states and transition delays, and it stresses that timing varies by technology, device, and carrier. Its representative model of a typical 3G radio says a transfer keeps the radio drawing energy for at least 18 seconds, including the transfer itself and a tail in a higher-power state afterward. Apple’s guide makes the same general point: radios stay active for a period after network activity.
The practical consequence is that frequent small bursts of activity, such as push notifications or background refreshes, can keep the radio in an energy-hungry state more often than a single long download would. Toggling networks back and forth does not avoid this, and the 2009 study’s measurements included the cost of handovers, so repeated manual switching is not a guaranteed battery technique.

- Choose the two network settings you want to compare, such as automatic LTE/5G selection and a forced older network. Find the option in your phone’s cellular settings (on iPhone under Settings, then Cellular; on Android the menu name varies by manufacturer, so look for mobile network or network mode). Paths differ by OS version and carrier.
- Pick the places and times you normally use the phone, and repeat the test in the same locations over similar periods.
- Keep the workload as steady as you can: same screen brightness, same apps, same amount of messaging, and no large downloads unless you are testing that specifically.
- Start each run from the same battery level and record the percentage drop over the same window, noting the signal bars and any dropped calls or stalled data.
- Only accept a change as real if it repeats across several runs. A single run can be skewed by a weak signal, a background update, or a hot day.
- Watch for trade-offs. A forced older network may reduce data speed or cut off service where you live, and that loss matters more than a small battery gain.
Choosing a setting for daily use
The right choice depends on the task and the coverage you have. The table below summarizes what the sources support for each factor.
| Factor | What the evidence supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Task type | Voice and text versus large downloads produced different energy results in the 2009 study | Which activities dominate your day |
| Coverage | Poor or fluctuating signal increases retries and search activity, which drain energy | Whether the network you would switch to has strong, stable service in your usual places |
| Device and carrier | Radio timing and state transitions vary by device and carrier | Your phone’s own results, not published models |
| Availability | The sources do not establish current local 2G or 3G availability | Your carrier’s current network support for your market |
In most cases, the largest battery gains come from fixing poor coverage, using Wi-Fi where it is reliable, and reducing background activity, rather than from forcing the phone onto an older network.
