On the September 18, 2026 episode of WWE SmackDown, four creative choices stood out: Damian Priest explained his betrayal of R-Truth, Trick Williams earned a Money in the Bank opportunity, Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Title, and CM Punk ended the show by attacking both Zayn and Kevin Owens. Those are judgments about the episode’s storytelling, not confirmed accounts of who made each booking decision or why.
1. Damian Priest gave his betrayal a reason
Sportskeeda’s account of the episode says Priest explained that he was tired of repeatedly cleaning up after R-Truth and frustrated by Truth handing out title opportunities. The WWE results recap reviewed here does not independently document that segment, so the explanation should be understood as Sportskeeda’s account rather than a detail confirmed by WWE’s results page.

As a storytelling choice, letting Priest explain the turn gives viewers a motive to judge. A betrayal can create immediate surprise; an on-screen reason gives the conflict somewhere to go beyond the moment itself. That does not prove the explanation was persuasive to every viewer, but it makes Priest’s grievance part of the story.

2. Trick Williams earned a major-match opportunity
WWE confirms that Williams defeated Randy Orton and Rey Fenix in a triple-threat Money in the Bank qualifying match. The win put Williams into the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, giving him a high-profile opportunity alongside established names.
#1 Best Overall
Sportskeeda’s case for the booking is that the ladder match could help elevate Williams, while Orton’s stature leaves a direct title route credible. Those are plausible readings of the setup, not guaranteed outcomes: the result establishes Williams’s qualification, not what the match will do for his career or where Orton’s story will lead.
3. Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Title
Zayn defeated Kevin Owens to keep the championship. WWE’s recap says CM Punk struck Owens with the title during the match, creating the opening for Zayn to land a Helluva Kick and win.
Sportskeeda argues that an immediate title loss would have undercut Zayn after he won the championship the previous week. Keeping the belt on him preserved his place as champion for the next chapter, while the interference made the result contested rather than a straightforward statement that he had conclusively overcome Owens.
4. CM Punk made the closing angle about more than the result
After interfering in the title match, Punk hit both Owens and Zayn with a GTS after the bell, according to WWE’s recap. The sequence turned a championship defense into a final image involving all three wrestlers.
Rank #3
Sportskeeda viewed Punk’s return and attack as an effective closing moment in light of the previous week’s title-match events. That is an editorial assessment, but the structure is clear on screen: Zayn retained, Punk’s actions affected the finish, and the post-match attack left the episode with unresolved conflict rather than a neat ending.
