4 Reasons to Skip Smart Bulbs—and What to Use Instead

Smart bulbs offer control and customization, but their extra cost, standby use, upkeep, and compatibility needs may not be worthwhile for every home.

Smart bulbs are worth skipping if you do not need app control, schedules, dimming, or color changes: you would pay more for connected features and take on extra setup and upkeep. The trade-offs that matter most are the initial cost, standby electricity, device support and account requirements, and what happens if the smart system stops working. None applies equally to every bulb or household, so check the specific product before deciding.

1. You may pay more for features you will not use

Smart lighting can add remote control, dimming, adjustable white tones, color changes, scenes, and schedules. ENERGY STAR notes that smart-lighting features vary and that more features raise the initial cost. If you just want a reliable light, those extras may not justify the higher purchase price.

For efficient basic lighting, a standard LED bulb is a simpler option. The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says LEDs use about 75% less energy than halogen bulbs and last 5 to 10 times longer; the page does not state a publication year, and these figures describe LEDs generally, not smart bulbs specifically. Check that the bulb fits your fixture and works with any dimmer you have.

A smart switch may be worth considering if your main goal is controlling several ordinary bulbs together. Consumer Reports’ 2019 article discusses this as a potentially more affordable approach across multiple fixtures, but installation may be more involved and could require an electrician. Costs and wiring requirements depend on the home and jurisdiction; consult a suitably qualified professional when needed. ENERGY STAR’s smart-lighting overview and the Australian government’s lighting guidance explain the feature and LED trade-offs.

2. Connected bulbs add setup and maintenance

Smart-bulb requirements differ. Some devices work without internet access; others need an internet connection, a smartphone app, or an account. Before buying, check what the exact bulb requires and whether its controls still work the way you expect if your internet or account is unavailable. GOV.UK’s smart-device guidance describes these varying requirements.

Connected products also need ongoing manufacturer support. The National Cyber Security Centre advises choosing devices with continuing support and installing updates for bugs and security issues. Unsupported devices may be easier to compromise or may stop working. That is a general smart-device concern, not evidence that every smart bulb is unsafe. Check whether the manufacturer provides updates and how they are installed; GOV.UK also recommends changing weak default passwords and enabling two-factor authentication if it is offered. See the NCSC’s smart-device guidance.

Privacy practices also vary by product. The Information Commissioner’s Office recommends checking what a smart product collects, whether information is shared, and whether its app requests permissions that seem excessive. Its advice covers smart products broadly; it does not establish a specific data practice for every bulb. Read the manufacturer’s privacy information and review app permissions before connecting a bulb. The ICO’s smart-products guidance explains what to look for.

3. “Off” can still use standby electricity

Most smart lighting products need standby power to stay controllable through an app or remote, so switching a bulb off in the app may not cut its electricity use entirely. The Australian government’s lighting guidance recommends checking a product’s standby consumption and suggests 0.5 W or less. Treat that as consumer guidance, not a universal measurement or guarantee for every model; the actual figure depends on the product.

If you routinely turn off a wall switch, consider whether that will disconnect the bulb and prevent app or voice control until power is restored. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for how the bulb behaves after power is interrupted.

4. Compatibility and backup lighting take planning

A bulb can be inconvenient if it does not work with your router, control device, existing dimmer, or preferred smart-home setup. Some systems also require extra hardware, such as a hub or bridge; others do not. Check the exact bulb’s compatibility list and what hardware is included rather than assuming all smart lighting works the same way. The Australian government’s lighting guidance and Electrical Safety First’s smart-home advice both emphasize compatibility checks.

Think through how you will light a room if the app, network, bulb, or wider smart system fails. Electrical Safety First recommends considering whether manual lighting is available when a smart system goes down. Keep a practical way to use essential lights without relying on a working app or connection, and check the product’s physical controls and recovery instructions before purchase.

How to decide what belongs in your home

Option Best fit Costs and trade-offs to check
Smart bulb You want app control, schedules, dimming, adjustable white light, colors, or scenes. Higher initial cost for added features; possible standby use; check app, account, network, support, compatibility, and any hub requirement.
Standard LED bulb You mainly want efficient everyday illumination without connected features. Check fitting and dimmer compatibility. The Australian government’s cited LED efficiency and lifespan figures are for LEDs generally, not a particular model.
Smart switch You want to control multiple regular bulbs together. Installation can be more involved and may require an electrician; wiring and installation requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Skip smart bulbs if their connected features do not solve a real problem for you, or if you would rather avoid app and account requirements, standby use, and support checks. If those features are useful, compare the product’s requirements and plan for manual control before buying.
