A 4-pass color printer prints an image area over four passes. “Four-pass” describes how the printer lays down the image; it does not mean the printer uses four colors. CMYK, by contrast, is a four-color ink set. Pass count can affect speed and print uniformity, but its results depend on the printer and its settings.
What does “4-pass” mean on a printer?
In multipass inkjet printing, the printhead makes multiple passes over an image area. A four-pass mode divides the printing work among four passes, though the printer’s exact movement and the way it allocates image data vary by model. A print mask can determine which pixels are deposited on each pass, distributing work across passes and nozzles.

That does not mean every pass lays down exactly one-quarter of the ink. The ink fraction and pattern depend on the printer’s print mask, screening, head arrangement, and motion. The general relationship between pass count and ink per pass is not a fixed rule (USPTO patent publication US20060098035A1; IS&T International Symposium on Electronic Imaging, 2020).

Does 4-pass mean the printer has four colors?
No. Pass count and ink colors describe different things. CMYK refers to cyan, magenta, yellow, and black—the four inks commonly used to make color images. Four-pass describes how the printer distributes image deposition over repeated passes. A printer’s color set, resolution, speed, and pass mode are separate specifications.

What changes when you choose four passes?
Printing time
More passes generally take longer because the printer makes more movements or divides the work across more steps. There is no universal timing ratio: technical examples use different implementations and assumptions. One 2020 paper says that, in its implementation, printing a fixed-size image in four passes takes four times as long as single-pass printing; an industrial-printer paper describes four-pass printing as taking “a little more than 4 times” as long. These are not general timing guarantees (2020 paper; 2008 industrial-printer paper).
Uniformity and visible artifacts
Distributing pixels across passes and nozzles can reduce the visible effect of some missing nozzles. That may help with certain artifacts, but it cannot guarantee a defect-free print or ensure that every image will look better in four-pass mode.

Content and printer settings
The best setting can depend on the image and the printer’s workflow. The wallPen E2 User Manual, version 2.0.4, says fewer passes are faster but produce a coarser result, while more passes are slower and produce a more homogeneous result. In that product’s workflow, it also notes that text and graphics may appear sharper with fewer passes, while gradients, images, and large areas of color may benefit from more passes. Treat these as model-specific observations, not universal rules (wallPen E2 User Manual).

Does four-pass printing guarantee better quality?
No. Four-pass is a print mode, not a quality grade. Additional passes can improve uniformity or help reduce the visibility of some nozzle-related issues, but they can also increase printing time. The outcome depends on the printer, media, image, and available settings; pass count alone does not establish a printer’s resolution or overall print quality.

A real four-pass example
Epson lists a high-speed poster-printing rate of 381 sq ft/hour in four-pass mode for its SureColor P10000 Standard Edition Printer, for the coated-media use cases specified on its product page, accessed in 2026. The same listing gives 251 sq ft/hour for its six-pass mode. These are manufacturer figures for that printer and context—not a general benchmark for four-pass printing (Epson SureColor P10000 product page).

How to interpret a printer’s pass-count setting
- Check the printer’s manual or driver to see what its pass modes mean; implementations differ.
- Compare modes using the same image, media, and print settings when judging speed or appearance.
- Choose based on the job: faster modes may suit text or graphics, while a slower mode may suit gradients or large color areas on some printers.
- Do not infer the ink colors, resolution, or guaranteed quality from the pass count alone.
