4 Omarchy Alternatives for Linux Users Who Want a Change

Want a change from Omarchy but still use Hyprland? Compare ML4W, end-4, HyDE and Dank Linux—and learn what these setups do and do not replace.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a different experience without leaving Hyprland, the most direct Omarchy alternatives are ML4W, end-4, HyDE and Dank Linux. They are preconfigured Hyprland setups or a desktop suite—not four replacement Linux distributions. If you want to leave the tiling workflow or Hyprland itself, you’ll need to compare other desktop environments separately.

Omarchy is an Arch-based, terminal-forward system built around Hyprland and Quickshell, according to the Omarchy manual. The options below change the setup and desktop layer around Hyprland; they do not all replace the underlying operating system.

Which Omarchy alternative fits your preferred workflow?

Option What it is Best fit
ML4W (My Linux 4 Work) A preconfigured Hyprland setup with GUI settings apps, feature-rich panels and a welcome app. People who want a more desktop-environment-like experience and graphical settings while keeping Hyprland.
end-4 A Material-styled setup with many apps; its description acknowledges that some tinkering is involved. People who like Material design and want a more app-rich configuration.
HyDE A Hyprland dotfiles option focused on a clean, minimal aesthetic and terminal use. People who want a visually distinctive setup and are comfortable with a terminal-led workflow.
Dank Linux A desktop suite built around DankMaterialShell, installable on many popular existing distributions. Its components include a bar, launcher, notifications, lock screen, control center and wallpaper-based theming. People who want to add a fuller desktop shell to an existing supported Linux installation.

These descriptions come from the Hyprland Wiki’s preconfigured setups page. They are not the result of independent performance or reliability testing, so treat them as distinctions in design and included features rather than rankings.

1. ML4W: a more desktop-like Hyprland setup

Choose ML4W if you want Hyprland’s tiling environment with more of the visible structure and graphical configuration associated with a conventional desktop. The Hyprland Wiki describes GUI settings apps, preconfigured feature-rich panels and a welcome app. Those components may suit users who would rather adjust settings through interfaces than build every part of the environment themselves.

2. end-4: Material styling with room to tinker

end-4 is the option to consider if you are drawn to Material styling and want a configuration that comes with many apps. The Hyprland Wiki also notes that it involves some tinkering, so it is a less obvious fit if your priority is a hands-off setup. The documented description does not establish how much configuration any particular user will need.

3. HyDE: a clean, minimal, terminal-focused configuration

HyDE is described by the Hyprland Wiki as a popular dotfiles option for people who prefer a minimal, clean aesthetic and use the terminal. It is a closer fit for someone seeking a curated Hyprland look and terminal-oriented workflow than for someone specifically seeking a graphical settings layer or a complete desktop suite.

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad

4. Dank Linux: a shell and desktop layer for an existing distribution

Dank Linux is distinct from the other entries: the Hyprland Wiki describes it as a desktop suite built around DankMaterialShell, with an installer that can turn an existing installation of many popular distributions into a themed Hyprland desktop. Its listed pieces—bar, launcher, notifications, lock screen, control center and wallpaper-based theming—make it the fuller shell-oriented choice in this shortlist. Check its current support information before assuming a particular distribution is compatible.

What these alternatives do—and do not—replace

ML4W, end-4 and HyDE are configurations or dotfiles, while Dank Linux is a suite added to an existing distribution. None should be treated as a complete operating-system replacement on the basis of the Hyprland Wiki descriptions. They are most relevant if you want to remain in the Hyprland ecosystem while changing its look, included components or configuration approach.

If what you want to change is the tiling workflow or Hyprland itself, this list is not the right comparison. The available project descriptions do not support ranking GNOME, KDE Plasma or other desktop environments against these options; choose a separate distribution-and-desktop comparison based on your hardware, software needs and preferred workflow.

Could you keep Omarchy’s approach on another Linux base?

The Omarchy manual’s “Omarchy on…” page mentions a community port of the essence of Omarchy to NixOS. It is not presented as an official Omarchy edition, and the manual cautions that the port may not stay current with changes to Omarchy. Consider it an adjacent community project rather than a guaranteed drop-in alternative.

Plan the change without confusing it with Omarchy’s installer requirements

Omarchy’s documented installation process is useful context if you are replacing your current system, but its requirements are specific to Omarchy and should not be assumed to apply to the alternatives above.

  1. Back up files before changing systems. Omarchy’s Getting Started guide says its full-disk installation wipes the selected drive. The guide also describes an option to install into free space for dual booting.
  2. Use the installation media described by the project. Omarchy’s guide says to download its ISO, put it on a USB stick and boot from it. This is an Omarchy workflow, not a universal instruction for ML4W, end-4, HyDE or Dank Linux.
  3. Check firmware and input-device requirements for Omarchy specifically. Its guide says Secure Boot and/or TPM must be turned off to install Omarchy. It also says the default encryption flow requires entering a startup password and that a Bluetooth keyboard cannot be used for that prompt; a wired or 2.4 GHz keyboard is recommended.
