Matter commands can run locally while you are home, but remote control follows a cloud path. These limits depend on your devices, network, and the feature you need.
1. Matter support can require compatible hub hardware and network settings
The Google Home app is the control interface; it is not itself the physical hub that provides Matter hub functions. If you do not use Matter devices, you may not need to buy a hub just to manage compatible devices in Google Home. For Matter, however, Google lists specific compatible devices as hubs, and their protocol support differs.

Some listed hubs support Matter over Wi-Fi only. Others support both Wi-Fi and Thread. If your Matter setup includes Thread devices as well as Wi-Fi devices, Google says the hub must also be a Thread border router. Google lists the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max among its devices that support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread; check the current hub list before choosing hardware because support depends on the model. Google’s Matter preparation guide gives the current details.
Matter also depends on the home network: Google says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. A device may appear to set up successfully even when IPv6 is unavailable, then fail to respond or lose other functions. This is a Matter-specific requirement, not a general prerequisite for every non-Matter device controlled through Google Home.

2. Third-party devices may expose only some controls
Compatibility does not necessarily mean full feature parity. Google notes that a third-party device might respond to basic voice commands such as turning on or off, while brightness or color controls are unavailable in Google Home. For non-Matter products, setup in the manufacturer’s app may be required before linking the account or service to Google Home. The app’s compatibility directory is useful for checking whether a product works, but verify that it supports the exact controls you want. Google’s compatible-device directory and its third-party setup instructions are the relevant starting points.
Some integrations also depend on a manufacturer’s cloud service remaining available. As a specific example, Google’s support page says Belkin informed Google that Wemo cloud service ended on January 31, 2026; after that change, cloud-dependent features in Google Home and the Wemo app no longer function. That is a Wemo-specific service change, not evidence that all third-party integrations have failed.

3. Automation support varies by device and behavior
Google Home offers automation starters, conditions, and actions, but Google says not every device supports every available option. Support can differ by device and by the particular behavior you want: a product may be controllable in the app without exposing an event that can start a routine or an action a routine can perform. Google’s current list also marks some items as not yet supported in Help me create or Ask Home, so support in one part of the experience does not guarantee support in another.

Before building a routine, check whether the exact device and desired starter, condition, or action appear in Google’s supported automation list. Treat compatibility, manual controls, and automation support as separate checks.

4. Local Matter control does not make remote control cloud-free
When you issue a Matter command from inside the home, Google says it travels locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. When you are away, the command connects through the cloud to the hub, which then sends the device command locally. As a result, local Matter operation at home does not mean remote control works independently of internet or cloud connectivity.
Matter Multi-Admin can let multiple compatible apps share Matter devices, but Google says each Matter-certified app needs its own compatible hub. Adding another app therefore does not automatically remove the hub requirement. See Google’s Matter setup and control guidance for the local, remote, and Multi-Admin details.

How to decide whether Google Home fits your setup
- Check device-level controls: Confirm the exact model supports the app controls you need, not just basic compatibility.
- Check Matter hardware: For Matter-over-Thread, verify that your hub model includes Thread border-router support; also confirm IPv6 is enabled on the home network.
- Check automation behavior: Look up the precise starter, condition, and action for each device before relying on a routine.
- Check service dependencies: For non-Matter devices, find out whether linking, remote access, or a feature depends on the manufacturer’s app or cloud.
- Check multi-app plans: If you want to share Matter devices across apps, confirm each app’s hub requirement rather than assuming one hub serves every ecosystem.
