They do not affect every model equally, and better headline specifications alone cannot resolve them.
1. Longer battery life through better efficiency
Battery life depends on both battery capacity and the game’s demands. A demanding game can drain a handheld quickly even when the device has a relatively large battery; capacity by itself does not predict how long it will run.

Microsoft’s September 2025 developer guidance says games are not traditionally optimized for battery life. It recommends game-specific profiles and settings, alongside global system settings, to balance image quality, performance, and efficiency. Microsoft also advises developers to test on representative Windows gaming handhelds and tune settings to extend battery life without sacrificing gameplay or the overall art style. The hardware shows why capacity is only part of the answer. ASUS lists a 60 Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally and an 80 Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Progress therefore needs to come from both sides: more efficient hardware and games with sensible handheld profiles. Users should be able to lower power demand without having to guess which settings will preserve a good-looking, playable experience.
2. A more coherent handheld-first software experience
A handheld is a small-screen PC operated with built-in controls, not simply a desktop interface squeezed onto a smaller display. Menus, launchers, settings, and system prompts all need to work comfortably without a keyboard and mouse.
A gaming overlay can make common tasks easier, but it does not automatically unify the layers underneath. Windows, device utilities, game launchers, and individual games may each have their own controls and settings. A PC Gamer review of the Ally X in October 2025 praised its hardware while criticizing the lack of a fully unified software experience. That is one reviewer’s assessment of that device, not a verdict on every handheld.

Improvement means making core actions—launching a game, changing performance settings, managing updates, and returning to play—consistent and controller-friendly. Sleep and resume also matter: a handheld should make it clear whether a game will reliably pick up where it left off, rather than leaving users to navigate a desktop-like troubleshooting routine.
3. Better sustained performance per watt
Peak specifications do not tell the whole story. In a battery-powered handheld, the practical question is how smoothly a game runs at a reasonable power draw, and whether it can maintain that experience rather than briefly reaching a high frame rate at the cost of heat, noise, or battery life.
Microsoft recommends that developers test on representative handhelds and tune game settings for systems that may be running on battery. That points toward a more useful goal than simply adding faster chips: game-specific optimization that delivers stable performance with less energy, without making a game look or feel compromised.

Features that generate frames can also involve trade-offs. In its October 2025 Ally X review, PC Gamer observed artifacts from frame-generation features in its testing. That finding is specific to the reviewer’s experience; it does not establish that every implementation or game will show the same issue. Handheld performance claims are most useful when they identify the game, resolution, settings, power mode, and whether the device was plugged in.

A higher price needs to buy gains that matter in everyday play: more useful performance, longer battery life, a better screen, more comfortable controls, or a smoother software experience. A larger memory or storage figure is not enough if the improvements do not address the buyer’s priorities.
The 2025 Xbox Wire announcement lists the ROG Xbox Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB of memory, and a 512 GB SSD, while the ROG Xbox Ally X is listed with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. Both announced models have a 7-inch 1080p display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. These specifications describe the announced devices, not a controlled comparison of their performance or value. Comfort and screen quality complicate the calculation. PC Gamer praised the Ally X’s contoured grips and performance at a 17 W setting, while questioning its price and criticizing its display. Those are the reviewer’s findings and preferences, not universal measurements. A screen’s resolution and refresh rate do not alone establish its quality, just as a comfortable grip for one person may not fit another.
There is no reliable universal value ranking without current prices and like-for-like testing. A meaningful comparison should use the same game, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target, brightness, and power conditions; it should also consider actual runtime separately from battery capacity, along with ergonomics, software, and storage. Prices and availability change, so value is a judgment to make with current listings and the games you actually plan to play.
