That usually means one compatible charger, a few known-good cables, a multimeter if someone knows how to use it, and a working flashlight—not a tangle of obsolete or damaged gear.
How to decide what earns a place in the drawer
Before keeping an item, check three things: whether it works, whether it is intact, and whether you can name a device or task it serves. Label connector types and less-obvious uses, and keep only a small, useful selection. An unidentified accessory that fits nothing you still own is clutter, even if it once came with an expensive device.

1. A safe, compatible USB charger
A charger is worth keeping when it comes from a reputable source, is undamaged, and suits a device you still use. USB-A and USB-C are different connector types; compatible USB-C chargers and devices can negotiate an appropriate power level. Check the charger, plug, and outlet for burn marks, sparks, unusual smells or heat, smoke, swelling, or cracks. Stop using a damaged charger, and do not open or try to repair it. Electrical Safety First offers consumer advice in a UK regulatory context, so its legal details should not be applied to other countries. Electrical Safety First’s USB charger guidance also advises buying from reputable retailers, following instructions, and keeping chargers away from heat and liquids.
2. A known-good charging cable
Keep a small set of cables that fit current devices and the jobs you actually need them to do. Mark connector type and, where it matters, whether a cable supports data as well as charging. USB-C does not mean every cable supports the same charging power or data capability; the cable and connected device both matter. The US EPA recommends replacing damaged cables and connectors in its equipment-life guidance.

Do not keep using a frayed, hot, intermittent, or otherwise unsafe cable. A repair tutorial such as iFixit’s USB cable repair guide shows that some faults may be repairable, but it is not a reason to retain a cable that is damaged or unreliable.
3. A digital multimeter—if someone can use it safely
A multimeter can help with basic electrical troubleshooting, including checking voltage, resistance, and continuity. It is useful only if someone in the household knows how to select the right setting and use the instrument safely. Consult the meter’s manual and safety rating; keeping one is not an invitation to probe household mains wiring casually.

Optional: a USB tester for charging problems
A USB tester may help someone who regularly troubleshoots charging faults, but it is a specialized tool rather than a household essential. Gardner Bender describes its USB tester as a tool for identifying issues involving ports, phones, chargers, and cables. Use one only if you understand what it measures and how to interpret the result.

Reuse or donate electronics that still work
If an electronic item works but you no longer need it, consider reuse, repair, or donation where practical. The US EPA says that donating operating electronics extends their useful lives and keeps them out of the waste stream longer. Its electronics donation and recycling guidance explains reuse and recycling options. Collection rules differ by location, so check your local electronics or household hazardous-waste program for end-of-life equipment.

Handle loose rechargeable batteries separately
Do not put lithium-ion batteries in household garbage or curbside recycling. The US EPA advises taping battery terminals or placing batteries individually in plastic bags to reduce fire risk, and recommends careful handling of damaged batteries with advice from the manufacturer or local authorities. Follow EPA guidance on used household batteries and local collection instructions. Do not try to modify or repack batteries yourself; iFixit’s battery-reuse guide warns that battery modification can be dangerous.
