You can still view My Maps on a phone, but Google directs users to a web browser to create or edit custom maps.
1. Plan a trip for a future departure or arrival
For a single destination, Google Maps on a computer can estimate a route based on traffic or transit schedules for a time you choose. This is useful when you need to decide when to leave or check an estimated arrival time for a planned journey.

- Open Google Maps on your computer and enter your destination in Directions.
- Choose a travel mode: Driving or Transit.
- Select “Leave now,” then choose “Depart at” or “Arrive by.”
- Enter the date and time to see the estimate for that planned time. You can send the directions to your phone.
This feature requires you to be signed in, covers one destination, and is available only for Driving and Transit. It is an estimate based on available traffic and schedule information, not a promise of future conditions.
2. Build a color-coded custom map with layers
My Maps is better suited than a standard directions screen to organizing a collection of places. Use separate layers for categories such as restaurants and coffee shops, then style locations with colors and icons. Layers can be shown or hidden, and their information can also be inspected or edited in a table.

- Open Google My Maps in a computer browser and create a map.
- Add a layer for each category or group of map features.
- Add places to the relevant layers, then choose colors and icons to distinguish them.
- Use the layer controls to show or hide groups, or open the data table to review their details.
Google’s Android help says existing custom maps can be viewed in the Google Maps app, but creating or editing one requires My Maps in a web browser: Google’s instructions for viewing My Maps on Android. That makes a computer especially useful for the authoring and organizing work—not because custom maps are unavailable to view on a phone.
3. Save an itinerary and adjust its route legs
For a trip you want to keep as a visual plan, My Maps can store directions on their own layer. You can add destinations and reshape the route on the map, which is handy for planning a multi-stop itinerary or showing someone how a route should run.

- In My Maps on a computer, open the map and choose to add directions.
- Enter the start and end locations, then add destinations as needed.
- Select Driving, Bicycling, or Walking and review the step-by-step directions.
- Drag the route on the map to adjust its path. Each set of directions is saved on its own layer.
Treat this as a saved, visual itinerary rather than assuming it works like Google Maps’ ordinary turn-by-turn navigation. Google’s My Maps directions and measurement instructions describe how to create and adjust these directions.
4. Measure a route, distance, or area
My Maps on a computer lets you draw a line or shape and see its distance; a closed shape also displays its area. This is useful for rough route comparisons or outlining a region on the map.

- Open the map in My Maps and select the measurement tool.
- Click the starting point, then add points along the route or corners around the region.
- Finish the line or close the shape to display the measurement.
Google notes that distance and area measurements are based on map scale and country. In ordinary Google Maps, Tom’s Guide reported in May 2026 that desktop shows measurements between individual points while mobile shows the total; that is a reported interface difference, not a guarantee from Google. If your places or routes already exist in a file, My Maps can import features from KML/KMZ, GPX, spreadsheets, CSV, TSV, XLSX, or a Google Sheet, subject to Google’s file and row limits. You can also share a map, export it as KML/KMZ, export a layer as CSV, or print from a computer.
