4 Cheap Tablets Under $500: Which One Is Right for You?

Tom’s Guide’s four cheap-tablet picks serve different priorities, from Apple apps and Google Play to Amazon services and big-screen entertainment. Compare their tradeoffs and test results before checking current prices.

For a well-rounded tablet, Tom’s Guide names the Apple iPad 11 (2025, A16) its best overall pick. Its other winners serve different needs: the Motorola MotoPad (2026) for budget Android, the Amazon Fire HD 10 for Amazon services, and the Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 for entertainment. These are Tom’s Guide’s rankings and test results, not independent hands-on testing by Freedom251. Prices can vary by configuration, retailer and date, so check the exact model and current price before buying.

How the four picks differ

The right choice depends less on the word “cheap” than on what you need to run. Start with the operating system and apps you use, then weigh performance, screen and sound, storage, portability and price.

Tablet Best fit Display and notable features Storage Battery test Main tradeoff
Apple iPad 11 (2025, A16) Best overall; a natural fit for existing Apple users 11-inch Liquid Retina, 2360 × 1640 128GB or 256GB 11 hours 25 minutes Tom’s Guide describes the screen as dim in bright areas; no Apple Intelligence features or key Apple Pencil support
Motorola MotoPad (2026) Budget Android with Google Play access Not stated in the cited guide Not stated in the cited guide 10 hours 31 minutes Tom’s Guide says it struggled with basic 3D games, even at low settings
Amazon Fire HD 10 Amazon services, including Prime Video and Kindle 10.1-inch, 1920 × 1200 32GB or 64GB; microSD expansion up to 1TB 12 hours 39 minutes Fire OS has a more limited app selection than Google Play
Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 Movies, shows and other entertainment 12.1-inch 2560 × 1600 2.5K, 120Hz, integrated JBL speakers and kickstand Not stated in the cited guide 16 hours Integrated speakers add bulk; not intended for heavy workloads

Battery figures are from Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test, which set brightness to 150 nits and repeatedly browsed the web over Wi-Fi until the battery ran out. They describe that test, not a guaranteed runtime in everyday use. TechRepublic notes that review methods differ, so results from different publications are not a direct head-to-head comparison.

Which tablet is best for each kind of buyer?

Apple iPad 11 (2025, A16): best overall

Tom’s Guide’s top pick combines an A16 chip with an 11-inch, 2360 × 1640 Liquid Retina display. The guide praises its performance, battery life, lightweight design and Apple ecosystem, and lists 128GB or 256GB storage. It cites a $349 price in its article text, but that is not a guarantee of the current price or of a specific configuration’s price today. Check the live listing before treating it as a sub-$500 option.

#1 Best Overall

  • SHARP VIEW, CLEAR SOUND – Experience sharp visuals and immersive sound for study sessions and streaming breaks. With 72% NTSC and quad Dolby Atmos-tuned speakers you can enjoy your study breaks with vivid videos and crystal-clear sound.
  • LEVEL UP YOUR STUDY – Write, organize, sketch, and calculate with four learning apps built to match your flow. Lenovo AI Note, Squid, Nebo, and MyScript Calculator help you stay clear, focused, and ready for every study session.

This is the most straightforward fit if you already use Apple devices or want access to the iPad app ecosystem. The compromises matter: Tom’s Guide calls the display dim in bright areas, and says the tablet lacks Apple Intelligence features and key Apple Pencil support. Consider whether those omissions affect your intended use before choosing it.

Motorola MotoPad (2026): budget Android

The MotoPad is Tom’s Guide’s budget Android choice for people who want Google Play access and long battery life. Its Wi-Fi browsing result was 10 hours 31 minutes in the guide’s 2026 test. The performance caveat is significant for games: Tom’s Guide says it struggled with basic 3D titles even at low settings. It is a better match for lighter everyday use than for demanding games or workloads.

Rank #2
Lenovo Tab One - Lightweight Tablet - up to 12.5 Hours of YouTube Streaming - 8.7" HD Display - 4 GB Memory - 64 GB Storage - MediaTek Helio G85 - Includes Folio Case

  • PORTABLE MEDIA CENTER - Enjoy vibrant visuals, immersive sound, and endless entertainment anywhere you go. The HD display has 480 nits of brightness for realistic graphics and dual Dolby Atmos speakers that provide impressive sound depth.
  • ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.

Amazon Fire HD 10: best for Amazon services

The Fire HD 10 pairs a 10.1-inch, 1920 × 1200 display with 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. It supports microSD expansion up to 1TB. Tom’s Guide recommends it for Amazon-centered use such as Prime Video and Kindle reading; its 2026 Wi-Fi browsing test result was 12 hours 39 minutes.

Its software is the deciding tradeoff. Fire OS has a more limited app selection than Google Play, so confirm that the apps you rely on are available before choosing it. A large screen and expandable storage do not make it a like-for-like substitute for a standard Android tablet if you depend on Google Play apps.

Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2: best for entertainment

The Tab Plus Gen 2 is built around a 12.1-inch 2.5K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, integrated JBL speakers and a kickstand. Tom’s Guide highlights those features for watching video and listening without immediately reaching for an external speaker. Its battery test result was 16 hours in the guide’s 2026 run.

The audio hardware adds bulk, and the guide does not position this model for heavy workloads. Tom’s Guide describes it as under $400 and often on sale below $300; those are time-sensitive price claims, not a current offer. Verify the current listing and configuration.

Is an iPad or Android tablet better if I’m on a budget?

Neither is automatically better. An iPad is a sensible choice if you already use Apple devices or prefer the iPad app ecosystem; the iPad 11 is Tom’s Guide’s overall winner here. A standard Android tablet is the better fit if Google Play access is important, which is the MotoPad’s stated appeal. Amazon’s Fire OS is a separate option focused on Amazon services, with a more limited app selection than Google Play.

Choose by the apps and devices you need to work with, not by operating-system labels alone. Check that your essential apps are available on the specific tablet before purchase.

Are Amazon Fire tablets worth buying instead of Android tablets?

They can be, if your use is centered on Amazon services such as Prime Video and Kindle and the Fire OS app selection covers what you need. The Fire HD 10 offers a 10.1-inch display, expandable storage and a strong result in Tom’s Guide’s Wi-Fi browsing test. If you need a broad selection of Google Play apps, a standard Android tablet is the more direct fit.

Can a cheap tablet play games or replace a laptop?

Casual games, browsing and video are different workloads from demanding 3D games or sustained multitasking. Tom’s Guide reports that the MotoPad struggled with basic 3D games even at low settings, so do not choose it expecting demanding-game performance. The guide also cautions that the iPad is not a laptop replacement for demanding work. For school or work, check that the software, keyboard or other accessories you need are supported, and be realistic about how much multitasking the tablet can handle.

How to compare a sub-$500 tablet before you buy

  • Confirm the exact price and configuration. Check storage, connectivity and model generation on the current listing. A cited article price or temporary sale does not establish today’s price.
  • Check app availability. Distinguish Apple’s ecosystem, standard Android with Google Play, and Fire OS before buying.
  • Match performance to your workload. Light browsing and video have different demands from 3D games or sustained multitasking.
  • Choose a screen for how you use it. Compare screen size and resolution; for the Lenovo, consider whether its 120Hz display and integrated speakers suit your media use enough to justify added bulk.
  • Assess storage and expansion. The Fire HD 10 supports microSD cards up to 1TB; the iPad is listed with 128GB or 256GB. Verify the other model’s configuration on its current listing.
  • Treat battery tests as comparisons within a method, not promises. Brightness, apps and network use affect personal runtime, and results from different review methods may not be directly comparable.

Editorial lists can also differ because of eligibility rules and priorities. TechRepublic’s 2026 guide uses US availability and a normal list price or manufacturer-listed estimated value of $500 or less; it excludes devices that only fall below the threshold during a temporary sale. Its lineup includes three of these four models as well as other picks, illustrating that “best” depends on the guide’s criteria and the buyer’s use case.
