4 Android Auto Navigation Apps Compared: Why TomTom Stood Out in One Rush-Hour Test

TomTom made one notable rush-hour lane recommendation in a reported comparison, while Google Maps, Waze and HERE WeGo offer different traffic and Android Auto features.

TomTom stood out in one reported rush-hour drive because it recommended a New Jersey Turnpike lane that could move faster than the cars-only lane. That is a useful example—not proof that TomTom is generally better than Google Maps in heavy traffic. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the two apps usually suggested nearly the same routes during a week of driving.

For Android Auto, the practical choice depends on what matters most: Google Maps offers familiar navigation and lane guidance; Waze emphasizes driver-submitted incident reports; HERE WeGo has a traffic-sharing option but limits some in-car route edits. TomTom is worth trying if its route choices work well on your regular drives.

What happened in the heavy-traffic comparison?

In Tom’s Guide’s account of a week using TomTom for commuting and a weekend trip, the reviewer compared it with Google Maps, keeping Maps open on another device. Most suggested routes were nearly the same. One difference came during rush hour on the New Jersey Turnpike: TomTom recommended the cars-and-truck lane when the cars-only lane could be slower. The reviewer said the choice saved time on that trip.

That is a specific route anecdote, not a controlled comparison of traffic accuracy or a measured time-saving result. It cannot establish that TomTom will choose better routes elsewhere, or even on the same road at a different time. The same review also noted occasional questionable advice. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on account describes the test and its limitations.

How the four Android Auto apps differ

App Traffic and route features Android Auto considerations
TomTom The current Google Play listing describes live traffic alerts, automatic rerouting, fastest, shortest and efficient route types, and lane suggestions. These are product claims, not independent accuracy measurements. The listing says the app supports Android Auto. The Tom’s Guide test reported that exit numbers were not shown in its Android Auto interface and that adding a point of interest to an existing route was unavailable during the test; those behaviors may have changed.
Google Maps Google documents live traffic information and color-coded traffic where data is available, along with estimated arrival times and lane guidance. Google documents voice-guided navigation. Typing a destination on the car display requires the vehicle to be in Park.
Waze Waze supports driver reports for traffic, police, crashes, hazards, bad weather and blocked lanes. These are user-submitted reports, not necessarily independently verified conditions. Google documents voice-command navigation and in-drive reporting. Typing a destination on the car display may require Park.
HERE WeGo Its Traffic setting shares ride information, including vehicle location and travel direction, and combines it with information from other drivers to provide routes. The app must be downloaded from Google Play to appear in Android Auto. Adding a stop or changing route preferences after navigation begins is not supported in the car interface, according to HERE’s support guidance.

When is TomTom worth trying?

TomTom is listed on Google Play as “TomTom – GPS Navigation App for Every Driver,” formerly AmiGO. The listing, updated September 21, 2026, describes traffic alerts, automatic rerouting, route-type choices, lane suggestions and Android Auto compatibility. Treat those as the developer’s feature descriptions rather than proof of superior traffic performance. Check the current Google Play listing for the app’s present name and details.

It is a reasonable alternative to test if you want another route suggestion during a congested commute. Tom’s Guide also described a separate occasion when a suggested turn using a jug-handle road saved time, but its overall finding was that TomTom usually proposed routes similar to Google Maps. The review characterized the app as relatively basic, so interface and route-editing needs may matter as much as the suggested path.

Choose Google Maps for familiar navigation and guidance

Google’s Android Auto help lists voice guidance, ETAs, live traffic information and lane guidance. Traffic appears in color-coded form where information is available. See Google’s Android Auto navigation instructions for current controls.

Choose Waze if community reports matter most

Waze lets drivers report incidents such as police, crashes and hazards while navigating. Reports can add useful context, but they are crowdsourced alerts rather than a guarantee that a condition has been independently confirmed. Google’s Android Auto help for Waze describes supported voice and reporting controls. Its older Android Auto announcement explains the launch of alerts, alternate routes and driver reports; for present-day use, rely on the current help page.

Choose HERE WeGo if its traffic sharing and route setup suit you

HERE says its Traffic feature sends ride information, including location and direction, and combines it with other drivers’ data. Its support page says route preferences can be set before navigation, but changing them or adding a stop after navigation starts is not yet compatible with Android Auto. Read HERE WeGo’s routing and navigation support for the current guidance.

How to compare them on your own commute

  1. Pick a repeatable route. Use a commute or regular trip where congestion commonly changes the best route.
  2. Compare at similar times. Check the apps on comparable days and departure times; traffic conditions and available local data can change the result.
  3. Note more than the ETA. Compare the suggested route, rerouting behavior, lane or exit guidance, incident reports and the controls you can use through Android Auto.
  4. Try a route before relying on it. An unexpected shortcut or lane recommendation may be useful, but check that it is legal and appropriate for your vehicle and circumstances.

The sources available here do not establish a national or global winner through controlled, repeatable accuracy measurements. Local road coverage, time of day and reporting activity can all affect what an app recommends. For Android Auto feature details, consult Google’s navigation help, its Waze help, and HERE’s support guidance.
