3G Core Network: What It Is and How It Works

A 3G core network is the service and switching/data-network portion of UMTS behind UTRAN, with circuit-switched and packet-switched domains.

A 3G core network is the service and switching/data-network part of a UMTS mobile network, logically separate from the radio access network. It manages connections and traffic beyond the radio layer and links the mobile network with external telephone and packet-data networks. In the classic UMTS architecture, its two main service domains are circuit-switched (CS) and packet-switched (PS).

What does “3G core network” mean?

In the WCDMA-based 3G architecture standardized as UMTS, the core network (CN) is the network-side set of functions behind the access network. 3GPP TS 23.002 describes the public land mobile network (PLMN) as logically divided into a core network and an access network. Its Release 6 specification, version 6.8.0, dates to the 2005-era specification series; it is useful for understanding the architecture, not as an inventory of what every operator deploys today. See 3GPP TS 23.002, Release 6.

“Core” describes a logical role, not one required chassis or physical layout. Specifications define functional entities and their relationships; network equipment can implement those functions in different arrangements. Also, “3G” covers more than one standards family, so this definition is specifically about UMTS rather than every technology called 3G.

How is the core different from UTRAN?

The access network connects a mobile station over the radio side to the rest of the mobile network. In UMTS, that access network is the Radio Network System (RNS), commonly referred to as UTRAN. The core begins beyond that access layer: it provides service-domain functions and interworking with other parts of the PLMN and external networks.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • UTRAN/RNS: the UMTS radio access network between the handset and the core.
  • Core network: the switching, session, and gateway functions that handle services and route traffic beyond radio access.

What are the two main UMTS core domains?

The traditional UMTS core is organized around two service domains. They differ in how they handle user traffic, though both also involve signalling.

Domain Traffic model Representative functions
Circuit-switched (CS) Connection-oriented traffic; the Release 11 architecture describes dedicated network resources being allocated when a connection is established and released when it ends. MSC, GMSC, VLR
Packet-switched (PS) User information is transported in packets. SGSN and GGSN in the GPRS/UMTS packet core

These are architecture categories, not a guarantee that every operator used every listed entity in the same equipment arrangement. 3GPP TS 23.002 Release 11, version 11.6.0, dated June 2013, describes UMTS alongside LTE/EPS and includes CS, PS, and IP Multimedia subsystem concepts. See 3GPP TS 23.002, Release 11.

What do the main core-network nodes do?

MSC-family functions in the circuit-switched domain

The Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) family supports circuit-switched services, including call setup and interworking toward external circuit-switched networks. The architecture names the MSC, Gateway MSC (GMSC), and Visitor Location Register (VLR) as CS-domain entities.

SGSN and GGSN in the packet-switched domain

The Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) supports a mobile device’s packet service, including mobility-related functions. The Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) provides the gateway toward external packet-data networks. The IETF’s RFC 3314 describes the GGSN as a specialized router serving as that gateway, and lists authentication, authorization, mobility management, and billing-information collection among SGSN functions. Read RFC 3314.

Is the 3G core the same as LTE’s EPC?

No. UMTS/GPRS and LTE/EPS are distinct architecture contexts. Release 11 of TS 23.002 discusses both, but associates SGSN and GGSN with GPRS and MME, Serving Gateway, and PDN Gateway with EPS. The fact that a later specification covers both does not make the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) the original UMTS core.

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) appears as an additional subsystem in later core-network architecture descriptions. It can be relevant when discussing multimedia services, but it is not required to explain the basic distinction between the classic CS and PS domains.
