A 3D virtual world is a computer-generated environment arranged in three dimensions, where people can explore digital spaces and objects and, in many cases, interact with one another in real time. It may continue to exist between visits, but persistence, immersion and social interaction are emphasized differently by different definitions. A VR headset is optional: it is one way to experience a world, not what makes it a virtual world.
What makes a virtual world 3D?
“3D” means that the environment and its objects are represented with depth as well as width and height. A user can experience the space as a place to move through, rather than only as a flat image or list of information. The term describes the structure of the digital environment; it does not specify a particular device, visual style or purpose.

In a technical terminology context, Recommendation ITU-T Y.4239 (November 2025), citing ISO/IEC 18039, defines a virtual world as the “spatial organization of multiple virtual objects, potentially including global behaviour.” That concise definition focuses on how objects are organized in space. It is not intended as the sole everyday definition: public-facing explanations often include how people use and experience the environment as well.
What do people do in virtual worlds?
People may use a virtual world to socialise, work, learn, play, make transactions or create. The European Commission’s FAQ describes virtual worlds as “persistent, 3D, real-time, immersive environments” for these activities. In social online worlds, users are often represented by avatars and can interact with other participants or simulated objects.

Persistence is a common feature, not a universal pass-or-fail test. It means that the environment or some of its state continues beyond an individual session. A 2013 review by J. D. N. Dionisio, W. G. Burns III and R. Gilbert likewise describes virtual worlds as persistent, online, computer-generated environments in which people in remote locations interact in real time for work or play. Definitions therefore commonly combine a spatial environment with some mix of persistence and shared interaction, while the emphasis varies by source and context.
Is a virtual world the same as VR?
No. A virtual world is the digital environment; virtual reality (VR) is an immersive way of experiencing digital content. A headset can make a virtual world feel more enveloping, but the world may also be accessed on a conventional screen. IEEE Technology Navigator describes shared virtual environments where avatar-represented users interact with people and simulated objects in real time, typically through immersive interfaces such as head-mounted displays. “Typically” does not mean “required.”

Is a metaverse the same as a virtual world?
Not always; usage differs. The European Commission frames a metaverse as an interoperable network of virtual worlds, so in that usage it is broader than any single world. Recommendation ITU-T Y.4239 uses a different emphasis, defining a metaverse as “a collective virtual environment where physical and virtual worlds converge” and users interact with shared digital spaces, objects and services.
IEEE’s standards initiative describes metaverse experiences more broadly still: they may involve a virtual-reality universe, an augmented-reality extension of the physical world or a digital counterpart such as a digital twin. It also treats persistence as an expectation and uses “Persistent Virtual Reality” as a narrower framing. Because these sources do not set out one identical definition, it is more accurate to explain which sense is meant than to treat “metaverse” and “virtual world” as exact synonyms.

How to assess a particular virtual world
The definition tells you what kind of environment it is, not how well a specific platform serves a particular purpose. When comparing examples, useful questions include:
- Persistence: Does the world or its state continue between visits?
- Participation: Can multiple people share the environment, and how do they interact?
- Tools: What can users do with objects, and can they create or change content?
- Access: Is it available through a screen, VR, augmented reality or more than one mode?
- Interoperability: Can people, objects or services move or connect across other worlds?
These questions separate the basic idea—a spatial, computer-generated environment—from choices about social features, access and links to other environments.
