Recovering 388GB without buying a new drive is possible when the old disk can still be read and you have somewhere else to put the recovered files. The right approach depends on whether files were deleted, the filesystem is damaged, or the drive is returning read errors. The 388GB figure is the amount claimed in this article’s title; the available technical documentation does not independently verify the incident or establish which adapters, computer, or steps were used.
First, protect the data that may still be recoverable
If files have been deleted or the filesystem is damaged, stop using the source drive. New writes can overwrite data that recovery tools might otherwise find. Do not save recovered files back to that drive: use separate storage with enough free space for the files or, if you are imaging the disk, for the image.

Before connecting a bare drive, identify its interface and physical size, and check its power requirements. A compatible USB-to-SATA adapter or dock can connect a bare SATA drive to another computer, but it will not suit every disk. The available account does not establish which “junk drawer” hardware was used in the 388GB recovery.

Choose a recovery method based on the drive’s condition
| Situation | Approach | What to expect | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Files deleted; supported filesystem; no new data written | TestDisk undelete | Attempts recovery using filesystem information | Support and prospects depend on the filesystem and whether the data was overwritten |
| Filesystem damaged, or ordinary undelete does not find the files | PhotoRec | Searches for files by their signatures | Recovered files do not retain their original names or folder structure |
| Read errors or suspected failing media | GNU ddrescue to image or clone the drive, then work on the copy | Copies readable areas first and records progress in a mapfile | Needs a separate destination; data in unreadable sectors may remain damaged |
When deleted files or filesystem damage are the problem
Try TestDisk when filesystem metadata may still help
CGSecurity documents TestDisk undelete support for FAT12/16/32, exFAT, NTFS, and ext2, provided the relevant data has not been overwritten. Stop using the affected media and direct recovered files to a different destination. The filesystem restriction matters: support for one format does not mean the same recovery method applies to every disk. CGSecurity’s TestDisk 7.2 and PhotoRec documentation describes the supported recovery paths.

Use PhotoRec when signature-based recovery is more appropriate
PhotoRec can search for file signatures when a filesystem is damaged or ordinary undelete does not work. Because it identifies files by content signatures rather than restoring the directory entries, it does not preserve original filenames or folder structure. Save its output to storage other than the source filesystem.
When the drive has read errors, image it before repair attempts
GNU ddrescue is designed to copy from a file or block device to a separate destination, prioritizing readable areas. It uses a mapfile to track progress, which lets a recovery attempt continue efficiently after interruption. The GNU ddrescue Manual, version 1.30, dated January 1, 2026, warns not to rescue a read/write-mounted partition and not to repair a filesystem on a drive with I/O errors.

Work from the image or clone rather than repeatedly experimenting on a drive that is producing errors. CGSecurity’s guidance on recovering data from a damaged disk with ddrescue explains the rationale for making a copy first. Imaging can preserve readable data, but it cannot recreate unreadable sectors; files that depend on those sectors may still be damaged.
Be especially careful if the destination is a device rather than a file: ddrescue overwrites the destination device. Confirm its identity and contents before starting. The destination must have enough capacity for the image or recovered output required by your chosen workflow.

What “junk drawer tech” can—and cannot—tell you
An old computer, cable, adapter, or dock may help make a compatible drive accessible, but the equipment must match the drive’s connector, size, and power needs. CGSecurity’s documentation covers directly attached storage such as SATA/eSATA and USB-connected devices; it does not verify the hardware used in this particular rescue. Treat the 388GB as the article’s account, not as a measured recovery rate or a guarantee that another damaged drive will yield the same result.
TestDisk and PhotoRec are free, open-source utilities according to CGSecurity’s TestDisk documentation overview. Their capabilities do not remove the need for separate destination storage or make every recovery successful.
