Despite the name, it was not three complete arcade games bundled together: it was a single fighting game whose content and features varied by platform.
What Mortal Kombat Trilogy included
GOG described Mortal Kombat Trilogy as “the second and final update to Mortal Kombat 3” in its August 15, 2022 announcement of a PC release. The game retained the MK3 foundation while restoring characters and stages from the original Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. It also added the Aggressor bar and new finishing moves. That makes “combined the original arcade trilogy” a useful shorthand for its broad mix of early-series content, not a literal description of three separately playable arcade games. Trilogy was a home release; it did not receive an arcade release, according to Kamidogu’s series history.
Why the versions differ
The game appeared on several home platforms, and they did not all have the same roster or content. A specialist platform reference lists 32 standard playable characters for PlayStation, PC, and Sega Saturn, compared with 26 for Nintendo 64. These are platform-specific figures and dates from one reference, not a universal launch schedule. Another overview reports a different North American PlayStation day and gives other region- and platform-specific dates. The broader version overview also describes omissions and version-specific content, so a higher roster count alone does not establish which edition is preferable.
Which version should you play?
Choose for the platform you can use
If you want the fullest standard roster according to the cited platform reference, its PlayStation, PC, and Saturn editions list 32 playable characters, while its Nintendo 64 entry lists 26. Hidden-character selections and other content differ, so check a platform-specific version guide if a particular fighter matters to you.

Consider access and condition
GOG announced a digital PC release on August 15, 2022, presenting it as a restoration and accessibility effort in collaboration with Warner Bros. The announcement establishes that release, but not present-day availability in every territory. For a physical PlayStation or Nintendo 64 copy, verify the region, condition, completeness, and compatibility with your console before buying; current stock and used-copy prices are not established here.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy arrived after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, extending the MK3 formula rather than serving as a new arcade installment. Its significance lies in bringing a broad selection of characters and stages from the early games together in one home release while adding features of its own. The platform differences are part of that history: the title is consistent, but the exact experience depends on which edition you play.
