Dak Prescott said he did not believe a late-game communication error with head coach Brian Schottenheimer was a sign of lost trust. After Dallas fell 34-31 to Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 27, both men said they had talked honestly about the pivotal third-down moment and would communicate better next time. Schottenheimer acknowledged that he used wording he regretted, but did not disclose the word.
How the late-game sequence unfolded
With the score tied late in Dallas’s game against Baltimore, Schottenheimer used a word before a pivotal third-down play that he later wished he had not used. Prescott made a quick throwaway, and Dallas settled for a field goal to tie the game. Schottenheimer said his wording put Prescott into a mindset he did not want him playing with; he also said he had overcoached the moment and took responsibility.

The Associated Press report by Schuyler Dixon, published by The Washington Post on Oct. 2, says Schottenheimer declined to reveal the word. Prescott characterized the problem as a term that should have been chosen differently—not an instruction to throw to a particular place.
Dallas’s kickoff then went through the end zone, leaving Baltimore with the ball and seven seconds remaining. Lamar Jackson completed a 27-yard pass, and Baltimore took a timeout with one second left. Tyler Loop made a 56-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Ravens a 34-31 win.

Did the loss damage Prescott’s trust in his coach?
Prescott said, “I don’t think it was a lack of trust.” Schottenheimer likewise said, “This has got nothing to do with trust.” Their public comments described a communication mistake, not a fractured relationship or a dispute over whether Prescott could be trusted to make a play.
Prescott called their debrief “Honest conversations between a head coach and a quarterback.” The report says the two discussed the play after the game and intended to improve their communication together. Neither man publicly identified the word or offered grounds to speculate about it.

What other decisions shaped the finish?
The wording before the third-down play was only one part of Dallas’s closing sequence. The kickoff choice and the defensive call were separate decisions; the report does not present them as a single cause of the loss.
The kickoff after Dallas tied the game
With seven seconds remaining after the tying field goal, Dallas kicked through the end zone rather than forcing a return. Baltimore began its final possession with enough time for Jackson’s 27-yard completion to set up Loop’s kick.

The defensive call
Defensive coordinator Christian Parker said he had overthought his call in the situation. He said, “So definitely would make a different call if that situation came up again.” That was Parker’s assessment of the defensive decision, distinct from Schottenheimer’s comments about communicating with Prescott.
