Choose 60 fps when smoother motion is important and your encoder, computer, upload connection, resolution, and platform bitrate can sustain it. Choose 30 fps when 60 fps causes dropped frames or encoding and rendering problems, or when you need to work within tighter system or bitrate limits. A stable 30-fps stream is better than an unstable 60-fps stream.
What changes between 30 fps and 60 fps?
Frame rate is how many video frames are sent each second. At the same resolution and under otherwise similar conditions, 60 fps sends twice as many frames as 30 fps, which can make fast motion look smoother. It also asks the system to render and encode more frames. Resolution, bitrate, codec, encoder, scene complexity, and connection stability all affect the result, so frame rate should not be judged in isolation.

There is no universal winner: official platform settings are recommendations for particular combinations, not a controlled comparison proving that one frame rate always looks better. The useful test is whether your actual system can deliver the frame rate and quality your content needs without instability.

When should you choose 60 fps?
Try 60 fps when fluid motion is a priority—for example, in content with frequent or fast movement—and your full streaming setup can sustain it. Check the platform’s bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the combination on your own system. OBS cautions that “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps” (OBS Overview Guide).

When is 30 fps the better choice?
Use 30 fps if 60 fps produces encoder or rendering problems, dropped frames, or an unreliable stream. It reduces the number of frames your software must render and encode, which can make it a more workable choice on a constrained system or connection. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance is direct: “If 60 fps is not working for you, try dropping it to 30” (OBS troubleshooting guide).
Do not keep 60 fps simply because the number is higher. If lowering the frame rate does not resolve the problem, OBS also suggests considering a lower resolution or simpler scenes. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can identify what improves stability.

Match bitrate to the platform and output
Bitrate recommendations depend on the platform, resolution, frame rate, and—on YouTube—the codec. The figures below are platform-published examples, not a universal quality formula or a guarantee of how a stream will look. Twitch calls its configurations recommendations and advises prioritizing stability over settings that cause dropped frames or push a connection to its limits (Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines).
| Platform and format | Published bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| Twitch, 1080p60 | 6,000 kbps (recommendation) |
| Twitch, 1080p30 | 4,500 kbps (recommendation) |
| Twitch, 720p60 | 4,500 kbps (recommendation) |
| Twitch, 720p30 | 3,000 kbps (recommendation) |
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps (recommended range) |
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps (recommended range) |
| YouTube Live, 720p60, codec as listed in YouTube’s encoder table | 3–8 Mbps (recommended range) |
| YouTube Live, 720p30, codec as listed in YouTube’s encoder table | 3–8 Mbps (recommended range) |
YouTube’s live encoder table lists encoding up to 60 fps and its H.264 recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Check the current table for your codec and output before setting a bitrate; platform guidance can change (YouTube Live encoder settings).

How to decide on your stream settings
- Start with the content and resolution. Decide whether smooth motion matters for what you stream, then choose the output resolution you intend to send.
- Check the target platform’s current guidance. Match the bitrate recommendation to the platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec where applicable.
- Set the desired output frame rate in OBS. OBS provides 30 and 60 fps as examples; exact menu labels can differ by OBS version. Confirm the setting in your installed version’s video/output configuration.
- Test a realistic stream. Use the scenes and activity you expect in a real broadcast. Watch for dropped frames and signs that rendering or encoding cannot keep up.
- Reduce settings if the stream is unstable. If 60 fps is failing, switch to 30 fps and retest. If needed, also try a lower resolution or simpler scenes, changing one variable at a time.
Check the encoder and viewer quality options
System requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU, but that alone does not show that you need a hardware upgrade. First test the encoder and settings already available on your system; consider hardware only if your measured needs are not being met (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
Viewer access to alternate quality levels also differs by platform. OBS describes YouTube as transcoding all streams, while Twitch availability is tiered and availability-dependent. Do not assume every Twitch viewer can select a lower-quality version (OBS Overview Guide).

Common problems and fixes
- 60 fps causes dropped frames or encoding trouble: Try 30 fps first, then test again. OBS also identifies reducing resolution or simplifying scenes as troubleshooting options.
- The stream is unstable at the selected bitrate: Recheck the platform’s guidance for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec. Prefer stable delivery over settings that test the limits of your connection.
- The stream looks less smooth than expected: Confirm the output frame rate you selected and assess it in a realistic test. A frame-rate setting cannot compensate for other configuration or stability problems.
- You are considering a computer upgrade: Check how your existing encoder performs under your intended settings first. Requirements vary; the fact that hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU is not proof that buying equipment is necessary.
