Use the Tab Actions Menu to View Recently Closed Tabs
The Tab Actions menu is one of the most direct ways to view and reopen recently closed tabs in Microsoft Edge. It is built into the tab strip, so you do not need to open Settings or search through your full browsing history. This method works in Edge on both Windows and Mac, although the exact placement of the button can vary slightly depending on your Edge version, window size, and whether vertical tabs are enabled.

In many versions of Edge, the Tab Actions menu appears as a small icon next to your open tabs. If vertical tabs are turned on, the control may appear near the top of the vertical tab pane instead. Select it, then look for an option such as Recently closed tabs or a list of recently closed pages. When you choose a page from that list, Edge reopens it in the current window.

- Open Microsoft Edge on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Move to the tab strip at the top of the browser window, or to the vertical tabs pane if you use vertical tabs.
- Select the Tab Actions button near the start of the tab area.
- Find the Recently closed section or the list of closed tabs shown in the menu.
- Select the tab you want to restore. Edge will reopen it as a new active tab.
This option is especially useful when you only need to recover one or two tabs you closed a moment ago. Instead of opening the full History page and scanning through every recent website visit, the Tab Actions menu usually focuses on the most recent tab activity. That makes it faster when you accidentally close a research page, online document, shopping page, or article and want it back right away.
There are a few limits to keep in mind. The Tab Actions menu may not show every tab from a long browsing session, and it may not restore pages from an InPrivate window after that private session has been closed. If the closed tab does not appear in the menu, use Edge History instead, where you can search by page title, website address, or date. Also, if your organization manages Edge settings on a work or school device, some history or tab recovery behavior may be restricted.
Reopen Recently Closed Tabs With Keyboard Shortcuts
The fastest way to bring back a tab you just closed in Microsoft Edge is to use the built-in reopen shortcut. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + T. On Mac, press Command + Shift + T. Edge immediately restores the most recently closed tab in the current window, including the page title and URL. In many cases, it also preserves the tab’s back and forward history, so you can continue navigating from where you left off.

This shortcut is especially useful when you accidentally click the X on a tab, close a tab while cleaning up a crowded tab bar, or realize a second later that you still needed the page. You do not have to open any menu or search through History first. Just make sure Microsoft Edge is the active app, then press the shortcut once to restore the latest closed tab.
How the shortcut works on Windows and Mac
- Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen the most recently closed Edge tab.
- Mac: Press Command + Shift + T to reopen the most recently closed Edge tab.
- Repeat the shortcut: Press it multiple times to reopen older closed tabs in reverse order, from newest to oldest.
- Closed windows: If you closed an entire Edge window, the same shortcut may restore that window with its tabs, depending on your recent session state.
For example, if you close three tabs one after another, pressing Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows, or Command + Shift + T on Mac, once restores the third tab you closed. Press it again and Edge restores the second tab. Press it a third time and Edge restores the first tab. This makes the shortcut a practical way to step backward through your recent tab closures without opening the History page.
There are a few limits to keep in mind. The shortcut works best for tabs closed during your current browsing session. If Edge has been fully quit, restarted after an update, or cleared of browsing data, some closed tabs may no longer be available through the shortcut. Also, if you are using an InPrivate window, closed InPrivate tabs are not available after that private session ends. For older pages or tabs closed before a restart, Edge History is usually the better place to look.
Find Closed Tabs Through Microsoft Edge History
Microsoft Edge History is the most reliable place to look when a closed tab is no longer available from the tab actions menu or the quick reopen shortcut. History keeps a chronoal record of pages you visited, so you can search for a specific site, scan recent activity, or reopen several pages from the same browsing session. This works the same basic way in Edge for Windows and Mac, with only minor differences in keyboard shortcuts and menu placement.
To open History from the Edge interface, select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of the browser, choose History, and then look through the list of recently visited pages. You can also select the History icon if it is pinned to the toolbar. The panel shows recent pages first, making it useful when you remember closing a tab but do not remember the page title exactly. Select any entry to reopen it in the current tab, or right-click the entry and choose Open in new tab if you want to keep your current page open.
Open Edge History with a keyboard shortcut
On Windows, press Ctrl + H to open Microsoft Edge History. On Mac, press Command + Y. These shortcuts take you directly to the full History page, where you get more room to search and filter than in the small drop-down panel. The search box at the top is especially helpful if you remember part of a website name, article title, product page, or domain. For example, searching for docs, github, or invoice can quickly narrow a long browsing list to the tab you need.

- Windows: Press Ctrl + H, then search or browse by time.
- Mac: Press Command + Y, then use the search field on the History page.
- Mouse method on both platforms: Open the three-dot menu, select History, then choose a page to reopen.
The full History page also groups activity by date, which helps when the tab was closed earlier in the day, yesterday, or during a previous work session. If you were researching across mulle tabs, scroll through the relevant time period and open each page you still need. To avoid losing your place, open entries in new tabs rather than replacing the History page. On Windows, you can usually do this by right-clicking an item and selecting Open in new tab; on Mac, use a two-finger click or Control-click to open the same context menu.
History depends on your privacy settings and browsing mode. Pages visited in an InPrivate window will not appear in standard Edge History after that InPrivate session is closed. History may also be missing if it was manually cleared, removed by a cleanup tool, or disabled through organizational policies on a work or school device. If you use Edge sync with the same Microsoft account on mulle devices, some history from other signed-in devices may appear as well, giving you another path to recover a page you opened on a different computer.
Restore Tabs After Closing an Edge Window
Closing a single tab is easy to reverse, but closing an entire Microsoft Edge window can feel more disruptive because several tabs may disappear at once. Edge can usually restore that closed window as long as the browser session is still recent. This works on both Windows and Mac, and it is especially useful when you accidentally click the window close button, quit the browser with mulle tabs open, or close a secondary Edge window that contained work-related pages.
The fastest method is to use the same reopen command used for closed tabs. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + T. On Mac, press Command + Shift + T. If the last thing you closed was a full Edge window, the shortcut reopens that window with its tabs in the same order. If you closed individual tabs after closing the window, you may need to press the shortcut mulle times until Edge reaches the closed window in its recent tab history.
You can also restore a closed Edge window from the History menu. Select the Settings and more button, shown as three dots in the upper-right corner, then choose History. In the History flyout, look for a grouped entry that represents the recently closed window. Edge may show it as a set of tabs from the same window rather than as one single page. Selecting the group, when available, reopens those tabs together. If Edge only lists the pages separately, open each page from the recent history list.
Set Edge to reopen your previous session
If you often work with many tabs, change Edge’s startup behavior so the browser automatically restores your previous windows after you quit and reopen it. Go to Settings and more > Settings > Start, home, and new tabs. Under the startup options, select Open tabs from the previous session. After this is enabled, Edge will try to bring back the tabs that were open when the browser last closed, including tabs from mulle windows in many cases.

This setting is helpful on both Windows and Mac, but the closing behavior can differ slightly by platform. On Windows, closing the last Edge window usually exits the visible browser session. On Mac, clicking the red close button closes the window, but Edge may continue running in the menu bar and Dock until you choose Microsoft Edge > Quit Microsoft Edge or press Command + Q. If Edge is still running on Mac, reopening a window may not always behave the same as restarting the app with previous-session restore enabled.
- Use the shortcut first: Press Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows or Command + Shift + T on Mac immediately after closing a window.
- Check History next: Open the History flyout if the shortcut restores only individual tabs or if you need a specific page from the closed window.
- Enable previous-session startup: Turn on Open tabs from the previous session to reduce the risk of losing a full workspace.
- Act quickly: The more browsing you do after closing a window, the harder it can be to identify the exact group of tabs you want to restore.
Tips for Recovering Tabs Across Windows and Mac
Recovering closed tabs in Microsoft Edge works similarly on Windows and Mac, but the fastest method depends on what you closed and how long ago it happened. If you only closed one tab by mistake, the keyboard shortcut is usually the quickest option: press Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows or Command + Shift + T on Mac. Repeating the shortcut reopens older tabs in the order they were closed, which is useful when you accidentally closed several tabs in a row.
If you closed an entire Edge window, reopen Edge first and try the same shortcut before doing anything else. Edge often restores the most recently closed window with its tabs intact, especially if it was closed during the current browsing session. On Windows, you can also check whether Edge is still running in another window or on another virtual desktop. On Mac, look for Edge in the Dock or use Command + Tab to switch between open apps before assuming the tabs are gone.

Choose the right recovery method
- Use the tab actions menu when you want a quick visual list of recently closed tabs without opening the full History page.
- Use keyboard shortcuts when you just closed a tab or window and want to restore it immediately.
- Use History when the tab was closed earlier, Edge was restarted, or you need to search for a specific page by title or website.
- Check synced history if you use Edge on multiple devices and are signed in with the same Microsoft account.
For better recovery across both platforms, keep Edge sync enabled if you regularly switch between a Windows PC and a Mac. Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and make sure History and Open tabs are turned on. This can help you find pages opened on another device, although synced data may take a short time to appear. If you browse in an InPrivate window, Edge will not save those tabs to regular history after the private session is closed, so recovery options are much more limited.
Recommended Free Tools
You can also adjust startup behavior to reduce the chance of losing work. In Edge, go to Settings > Start, home, and new tabs and choose Open tabs from the previous session if you want Edge to restore your previous browsing session whenever the browser starts. This setting is especially helpful after restarts, updates, or accidental quits. For pages you need often, consider saving them to Favorites or adding them to a Collection instead of relying only on recently closed tabs.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover recently closed Edge tabs across both Windows and Mac?
Yes, the main recovery options work on both platforms, but the shortcuts are different. Use Ctrl-based shortcuts on Windows and Command-based shortcuts on Mac, and check Edge History or synced history if you are signed in with the same Microsoft account on mulle devices.
Bottom Line
Microsoft Edge gives you several quick ways to get back to tabs you closed by mistake, whether you are on Windows or Mac. The tab actions menu is useful for a visual list, the keyboard shortcut is fastest for restoring tabs one by one, and browsing history helps when the tab is no longer in the recent list.
For the quickest recovery, try Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows or Command + Shift + T on Mac first. If that does not bring back what you need, open Edge history and search for the page you want to reopen.
