A conventional setup uses one dimmer and one mechanical 3-way switch, so the light can be switched from either location but brightness is adjusted at only one. To dim from both locations, use a manufacturer-approved master-and-companion system whose exact models are designed to work together.
What “two dimmers” can mean
A 3-way circuit controls one light from two locations; it does not mean three switches. A 4-way arrangement adds another control location, allowing control from three or more locations, according to Lutron’s explanation of 3-way and 4-way switching.

The phrase “two dimmers” can describe two different arrangements:
- Two standalone dimmers: Two ordinary dimmers installed on opposite ends of an existing 3-way circuit. Do not assume this will work. Lutron describes a conventional arrangement as one dimmer paired with one mechanical 3-way switch, and Leviton says normally only one dimmer controls the load in a 3-way or 4-way circuit. See Lutron’s guidance and Leviton’s answer on using more than one dimmer.
- A matched multi-location system: A master dimmer works with one or more compatible companion controls. Depending on the system, the companion may provide brightness adjustment as well as switching.
In Lutron’s conventional example, either control can switch the light, but only the dimmer adjusts brightness. That is different from a multi-location dimmer system, which is designed to let users dim from more than one location.

How multi-location dimming works
In a purpose-built system, one master dimmer controls the load and communicates with compatible companion controls. The companion is not necessarily a second standalone dimmer: it is a specific device designed for that master and circuit.
Lutron Maestro example
Lutron’s cited Maestro instructions specify one Maestro dimmer with MA-R companions, or another companion listed for that configuration, at additional locations. The MA-R cannot be used by itself. These are rules for the documented Maestro system, not a compatibility rule for other dimmers. Check the exact Maestro installation instructions for the approved devices and configuration.

Cooper Lighting’s HALO Home instructions also show a two-location 3-way installation using accessory dimmers. That system’s instructions require a neutral at both dimmer locations and say to stop and consult a licensed electrician if a neutral is unavailable. This requirement applies to the documented HALO Home setup, not to all multi-location dimmers. See the HALO Home product information and instructions.

What to check before choosing a dimmer system
- Brightness control at both locations: Confirm that the companion dims the light. Some companion or accessory controls only switch it on and off; Lutron distinguishes those from companion dimmers in its multi-location guidance.
- Exact model compatibility: Check the master’s instructions for approved companion models and the maximum number of controls. A matching brand alone does not establish compatibility.
- Neutral and wiring requirements: Requirements differ by product. Lutron notes that neutral requirements vary among Maestro models; HALO Home’s cited instructions require neutral at both dimmer locations. Consult the instructions for the exact model before buying or wiring.
- Supported circuit diagram: Compare the existing wiring with the manufacturer’s diagram. Leviton advises using an electrician if the wiring differs from its examples or a required neutral is missing.
Safety and installation limits
Turn off power at the breaker or fuse box before working on the circuit, as Lutron instructs. Do not identify a wire by its position alone: Lutron’s guidance says to identify the common terminal by its differently colored screw or label. Switch-box wiring varies, so the diagrams for the exact devices—not a generic 3-way wiring sketch—must govern the installation.
If you cannot identify the common terminal, the wiring does not match the manufacturer’s instructions, or you are unsure whether the circuit has a required neutral, stop and consult a licensed electrician. The sources cited here do not establish whether a particular installation complies with the electrical code in your jurisdiction; check applicable local requirements.
