You can bring in useful passages from web pages, digital reading highlights and physical books—then turn those fragments into knowledge by recording why they matter and linking them to notes you already use.
1. Web pages and passages you read
Obsidian Web Clipper is a free browser extension for highlighting pages and saving web content to your vault. It can capture a selected passage, use a template to shape the saved note, and attempt to extract the main article content by default. See Obsidian’s Web Clipper documentation for setup and features.

That makes it useful beyond conventional articles. You might save a technique from a recipe, a helpful forum answer, documentation for a public dataset, a product manual, or a passage from a long essay. These are possible applications of clipping and templates, not guarantees that every site will extract cleanly.
A practical capture path
- Install the Web Clipper browser extension and connect it to your Obsidian vault.
- On a page, select the passage you want to keep or clip the page using a suitable template. Check the result, since extraction can vary between sites.
- Keep the original URL and, when available, the author or publisher and the date you captured it.
- Add the excerpt or highlight and one sentence explaining why you saved it.
- Link the clipped note to an existing topic note when you can explain the connection.
Keeping the URL preserves a citation trail if the source page later changes or disappears.

2. Digital reading highlights, including Kindle
Readwise documents an export route for highlights from Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Instapaper, Pocket, Medium, Twitter/X, PDFs and other supported sources into Obsidian. Its Obsidian plugin can sync automatically or manually and include metadata such as a source URL, author, chapter headings, tags and notes. The plugin requires a Readwise subscription. What to expect from syncing
Sync is not necessarily immediate. Readwise says some services, including Kindle, Instapaper and Pocket, synchronize highlights only a few times daily. The Obsidian export can create a page for a new book, article or account, then append highlights to an existing page. For details, consult Readwise’s Obsidian export guide.

Make imported highlights useful
- Connect the reading sources you actually use and configure the Obsidian export.
- Choose automatic or manual sync based on how much control you want; do not assume a highlight will appear as soon as you make it.
- Review the exported passage and its metadata, then add a short note about why it matters to you.
- Link it to a topic note or question in your vault instead of leaving it as an isolated quotation.
3. Passages from physical books
Print reading can feed the same workflow, but it takes an intermediary step: Readwise says you can scan, type or dictate physical-book highlights into its app, then send them onward through its Obsidian export integration. This is not a built-in Obsidian scanner, and the Readwise subscription requirement applies to the export plugin. The Readwise sources page and Obsidian export guide describe the route.

Capture selectively
- Choose passages that prompt a question, offer a useful method or connect with something you already know.
- Scan, type or dictate the passage into Readwise.
- Record the book title, author and page number when available.
- Add your own interpretation, then connect the exported highlight to a relevant Obsidian note.
Selective capture is a practical way to keep the vault focused; a growing collection of quotations alone does not establish understanding.

The choice depends on where you read and how much setup you want. The Web Clipper is a direct, free route for web material. Readwise adds a paid intermediary for highlights across supported reading apps and physical books. The documented feature descriptions do not establish which workflow is faster or produces better notes for every reader.

Whichever source you choose, treat capture as the start of the work. Preserve enough provenance to find the original, write down why the fragment matters, and connect it to a topic, project or question in your vault. If you cannot yet explain the connection, leave the source details intact and revisit it when a relevant note emerges.
