3 Ubuntu FPS Games: Linux Support, Play Styles and Setup

Three SteamOS + Linux FPS picks for Ubuntu, their published minimum requirements, and how to check Proton compatibility before installing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Ubuntu, the clearest FPS starting points are three games with SteamOS + Linux listings: Team Fortress 2 for free class-based multiplayer, Counter-Strike 2 for competitive tactical play, and Left 4 Dead 2 for cooperative action horror. Their minimum requirements and play styles differ, so check the current Steam listing before installing. Steam Play with Proton can run some Windows games on Linux, but it is a compatibility option—not a guarantee. The available official information here does not establish a current cloud-streaming service or catalog for Ubuntu.

Can you play FPS games on Ubuntu?

Yes. Steam lists games for SteamOS + Linux, and its Store can be filtered to show supported titles. That listing is a useful first check, not a substitute for reviewing a game’s requirements and your PC’s hardware. Steam advises checking each game’s operating-system compatibility and system requirements on its store page. Steam’s supported-games guide explains the Linux listings; Steam Support’s platform-availability guide covers cases where a game is not listed for your current platform.

Which Steam FPS games work on Linux?

These three games have SteamOS + Linux listings and suit different kinds of play. Requirements below are the minimums published on their Steam store pages, not independently tested recommendations. Minimum operating systems on older listings do not guarantee that today’s Steam client will work on those releases.

Game Best fit Steam-listed Linux minimums Price model
Team Fortress 2 Class-based multiplayer, with nine distinct classes and multiple modes. Ubuntu 12.04; dual-core 2.8 GHz CPU; 1 GB RAM; listed older NVIDIA or AMD graphics; 15 GB storage. Free-to-play.
Counter-Strike 2 Competitive tactical multiplayer. Ubuntu 20.04; four hardware CPU threads; 8 GB RAM; AMD GCN or newer, or NVIDIA Kepler or newer, with current Vulkan drivers; 85 GB storage. VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library support is highly recommended. Not stated on the cited store listing in this guide.
Left 4 Dead 2 Cooperative action-horror, including five campaigns set in the US Deep South. Ubuntu 12.04; dual-core 2.8 GHz CPU; 2 GB RAM; listed older NVIDIA or AMD graphics; 13 GB storage. Not stated on the cited store listing in this guide.

The minimums are not a performance comparison: they do not establish how well a game will run on a particular PC. The biggest listed gap is storage and graphics support: Counter-Strike 2 calls for 85 GB and modern Vulkan-capable hardware, compared with 15 GB for Team Fortress 2 and 13 GB for Left 4 Dead 2. Check each current store page for changes before downloading. Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 publish their respective requirements.

How to install an FPS game on Ubuntu

  1. Install Steam and confirm it opens. Follow Ubuntu’s Steam on Ubuntu documentation, which also links to setup and troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Check the Linux listing. In Steam, filter the Store for SteamOS + Linux games, or inspect a game’s store page for its supported operating systems. Use the Steam for Linux supported-games guide if you need help locating the filter.
  3. Compare requirements with your PC. Check CPU, RAM, GPU and Vulkan support, and available disk space—not just the Ubuntu version. For example, Counter-Strike 2’s listing specifies 85 GB of storage and current Vulkan drivers for supported AMD or NVIDIA GPUs.
  4. Install and launch the game. Follow Steam’s install controls, then check for game-specific issues if it fails to start or behaves unexpectedly.

Can Proton run Windows FPS games on Ubuntu?

Sometimes. Proton is Valve software used by Steam Play to run Windows games on Linux. Ubuntu’s Proton/Steam Play guide explains how to configure it. Proton compatibility varies by game, so enabling it or completing an installation does not establish that a title will function fully.

Check compatibility before relying on Proton

  • Look for game-specific compatibility reports and any workarounds before choosing a Windows-only title.
  • Check the GPU model, driver stack and Vulkan support against the game’s requirements.
  • Keep graphics drivers current. Valve notes that some newer Proton games may require cutting-edge drivers that are not included with the latest Ubuntu release by default. See Valve’s Proton requirements.

Does “stream” mean cloud gaming on Ubuntu?

Not necessarily. “Stream” can mean playing from a cloud server, streaming a game from your own PC with a remote-play feature, or simply downloading a game through Steam. The official sources cited here establish local Steam installation and Proton compatibility; they do not establish current Ubuntu support, availability, game catalogs, subscription tiers or latency requirements for a cloud-gaming service. Do not treat local Steam Play as cloud streaming.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Which game should you choose?

  • Choose Team Fortress 2 if you want a free-to-play, class-based multiplayer game and its published minimums suit your system.
  • Choose Counter-Strike 2 if competitive tactical play is your priority and your PC meets its more demanding listed storage and graphics requirements.
  • Choose Left 4 Dead 2 if you want cooperative campaigns rather than the other games’ multiplayer focus.

There is no single overall winner established by these store listings: they describe different play styles and minimum requirements, not comparative performance on Ubuntu PCs.

Keep Ubuntu and Steam support current

Older Ubuntu versions named as game minimums should not be taken as proof that current Steam software supports them. Ubuntu’s Steam documentation points to maintained setup guidance, while Valve’s Steam for Linux project documentation notes that older Ubuntu LTS branches may stop working and specifies a current glibc requirement. Check current Steam client support and use a maintained Ubuntu release rather than relying only on a game’s older minimum OS label.
