Samsung’s settings can curb avoidable battery use, but they cannot restore capacity lost to battery wear—and no setting guarantees a particular battery-life improvement. Start by checking which apps and features are using power, then adjust background activity, Power saving mode, and screen behavior to fit how you use your Galaxy. The exact menus and options vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.
Check what is using battery first
Open Settings > Battery. On some Galaxy versions, the route is Settings > Device care > Battery. Review the battery-usage list for apps or features consuming more power than you expect. Samsung documents both routes and notes that menus vary across devices; if neither matches, search for “Battery” in Settings. 1. Limit background activity for apps you rarely use
Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, or search Settings for “Background usage limits.” Samsung’s labels and path can differ by software version. The controls let you limit apps that keep working when you are not actively using them.
Choose sleeping or deep sleeping selectively
- Sleeping apps have some background activity restricted. They may still run in certain circumstances.
- Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when you open them. Samsung warns that they may not deliver notifications or updates until then.
Use deep sleep for apps you do not rely on for timely alerts, such as a rarely used game. Avoid it for messaging, security, health, or other apps where delayed notifications would matter. Samsung’s developer documentation says apps generally become eligible for deep sleep after 16 days of inactivity; that threshold is subject to change, and the documentation describes exceptions. On Android 14 with One UI 6, foreground services are not interrupted by the deep-sleep feature. Samsung Developer’s app-management documentation explains the behavior.

2. Use Power saving mode when its trade-offs suit you
Find Settings > Battery > Power saving, or search Settings for “Power saving.” Depending on the model and software, the control may offer options to configure what gets restricted. Samsung says the mode can limit background activity and data and may disable high-power features such as Always On Display. Notifications or updates can be delayed, and performance may be affected.
This is a broader intervention than restricting one seldom-used app. It can be useful when you need to stretch the remaining charge, but it may be inconvenient as a permanent setting if you depend on background syncing, prompt alerts, or full performance. 3. Reduce screen-on time and brightness
Open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose a shorter interval so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone. Samsung’s US support page lists 15 seconds as the shortest choice and 30 seconds as the default; options can vary by model and software. Set a timeout that is short enough to avoid unnecessary screen-on time but long enough for comfortable reading.

Adjust it in Quick Settings or under Settings > Display; Adaptive brightness is another option if available. Keep the screen comfortably readable rather than dimming it so far that using the phone becomes difficult. Samsung identifies high brightness and long screen timeouts as factors that can reduce battery life. Samsung US support documents the timeout choices and display controls.

When these settings are not the whole explanation
A new phone or recent setup
Samsung says battery use can be higher for the first few days after initial setup while apps and services optimize. A temporary increase during that period does not by itself mean a setting is faulty. Samsung’s rapid-drain guidance describes this settling-in period.
Weak or unstable mobile signal
Samsung also identifies unstable mobile signal as a possible reason for increased drain. If the change happens mainly in a particular location, signal conditions may be part of the explanation rather than a setting change.

Battery wear
A battery’s capacity gradually declines through repeated charging and discharging. Samsung says lost capacity cannot be restored; software settings may reduce consumption, but they do not reverse battery wear. If the battery appears degraded, Samsung points users toward service or repair, with availability dependent on region and device. Samsung’s support guidance covers degradation and escalation.

Battery protection changes charging behavior to support battery lifespan. It manages charging rather than reducing immediate power consumption like display or background-app controls, so it is not a direct fix for rapid drain while using the phone. Find it by searching Settings for “Battery protection”; its availability and options vary by device and software. Samsung describes the feature in its battery optimisation guide.
