I prefer DVDs when I want a film I can keep, watch without a live internet connection, and revisit or lend. Streaming is more convenient for finding something quickly and browsing a broad catalog, so this is a personal preference—not a claim that discs are the better choice for everyone.
1. A DVD is a physical copy I can keep
With a DVD, the film is on a disc in my collection, rather than available through a streaming service’s catalog. I like being able to choose a title I already own without first checking which service carries it. That sense of keeping a copy is different from having access through a subscription or digital rental.

It is a preference, not proof that physical media is taking over. The FCC reported that U.S. spending on DVD and Blu-ray purchases and rentals combined fell from $11.8 billion in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2023. DVDs alone were not separated in that figure. Even so, Consumer Reports found that 49% of 2,022 U.S. adults surveyed in May 2024 said they had used DVDs or Blu-rays at home during the previous year. That is self-reported use of either format, not a measure of how many people own discs. FCC, 2024 Communications Marketplace Report; Consumer Reports, “Americans Still Love Physical Media”.

Once I have a compatible player and the disc, playback does not depend on an active internet connection. That is useful when my connection is unavailable or unreliable, or when I would rather not make a film night depend on network access. It does not mean streaming always needs fast or uninterrupted internet; the advantage is simply that a DVD does not need a live stream to play.

There is a practical trade-off: discs require a working compatible player, and a collection takes physical space. Streaming is easier when I want immediate access without handling or storing a disc. ADEME’s discussion of digital cultural services describes connected equipment and data transmission as part of streaming, while noting that environmental impacts depend on the scenario. ADEME, 17 November 2022.
3. A disc can be useful beyond one viewing
A DVD makes sense to me for films I expect to revisit. I can lend the disc to someone, and it may be resold or passed on rather than used for just one viewing. Those options depend on the disc’s condition, the terms that apply where it is sold or shared, and whether the next person has a compatible player.

Repeat use matters when considering environmental impact, but it does not establish that DVDs are always greener than streaming. ADEME’s lifecycle assessment says results vary with use: a disc can be reused over time, while buying one for a single viewing is not environmentally pertinent. A 2014 U.S. study by Shehabi, Walker, and Masanet, based on 2011 viewing estimates, likewise found that the comparison could change with the viewing method and assumptions; driving to obtain a disc increased the impact of the disc scenario. Those findings are scenario-specific, not a current universal ranking of formats. ADEME, 17 November 2022; Shehabi, Walker, and Masanet, “Energy and Greenhouse Implications of Internet Video Streaming in the United States”.
What I give up by choosing DVD
DVD is standard-definition video, so preferring it is not a claim that it generally looks better than streaming. The picture depends on the particular disc release and the streaming version being compared; the available evidence here does not establish a controlled quality comparison between specific versions. Streaming is the easier choice when I want broad selection or quick access without buying, storing, and loading a disc.
